  • Patent number: 8467792
Abstract: Techniques for performing handover in order to maintain call continuity for a user equipment (UE) are described. The UE may communicate with a first cell in a radio access network (RAN) for a packet-switched (PS) call, e.g., for Voice-over-Internet Protocol (VoIP) via High-Speed Packet Access (HSPA) in W-CDMA. The UE may send measurement reports to the RAN and may receive trigger from the RAN. The UE may establish a circuit-switched (CS) call with the first cell while the PS call is pending at the first cell. The PS call and the CS call may be for a voice call, and the UE may switch data path for the voice call from the PS call to the CS call and then terminate the PS call. The UE may then perform handover of the CS call from the first cell to a second cell, which may not support VoIP.

  • Patent number: 8462750
Abstract: The present invention allows originating endpoints to obtain reachability information from a directory service, which collects contact and related information from available users. When initiating a peer-to-peer communication session to an endpoint of a destination user, the originating endpoint will access the directory service to obtain reachability information for the destination user. The reachability information may contain one or more addresses, one of which will be a peer-to-peer communication session address. From the reachability information, the originating terminal will determine an appropriate address to initiate communications with the destination user. The reachability information may identify multiple addresses, where only certain of the addresses may be peer-to-peer communication addresses and other addresses may be used to establish other types of sessions through disparate types of networks.

Abstract: A system may install a trunk between a first switch and an end office, where the trunk is a trunk home for the end office. The system may further identify Numeric Numbering exchanges (NXXs) that home to the end office. Traffic for at least one of the identified NXXs is routed to the end office through a second switch that is different than the first switch. The system also causes traffic for the identified NXXs to be routed to the first switch.

Abstract: This invention concerns a messaging service in a wireless communications network. In a first aspect, the invention is a method for providing a messaging service on a wireless device in a wireless communications network; the method comprising the steps of: Retrieving the destination address of an outgoing message on the device. Verifying whether the destination address is capable of receiving the message via a packet-switched bearer. If verification is affirmative, then automatically sending the message to the destination address via a packet-switched bearer, but otherwise, automatically sending the message to the destination address via an SMS bearer. In another aspect, the invention is a mobile device programmed to perform the method. In a further aspect, the invention is a software program to implement the method.

Abstract: Embodiments of a method and system for enforcing a traffic policy at a Policy Enforcement Point (PEP) that controls the flow of traffic in a wireless communications network are described. In one embodiment, a method involves learning the topology of the wireless communications network, defining a virtual PEP (VPEP) within the topology of the wireless communications network, the VPEP comprising a location component that is remote from the PEP, associating a traffic policy with the VPEP, associating a traffic flow with the VPEP if the traffic flow has a characteristic that corresponds to the location component of the VPEP, and enforcing, at the PEP, the traffic policy that is associated with the VPEP against the traffic flow.

  • Patent number: 8396052
Abstract: A hybrid telecommunications switch includes circuit and packet switch fabrics, and a controller. The controller is configured to map IP traffic into ATM service categories, to separate incoming IP from circuit switched traffic and to provide access, through a connection admission control (CAC) protocol to a circuit switched fabric for IP traffic. Real-time traffic, such as voice traffic, may be separated from non-real-time traffic, such as Internet email traffic. Once separated, the real time traffic may be switched through a circuit switch fabric and the non-real-time traffic maybe switched through a packet switch fabric. IP traffic, such as that mapped into CBR and rt-VBR ATM service categories may aggregated “on-the-fly”, that is, without pre-provisioning, and switched through the hybrid switch's circuit switch fabric. IP traffic mapped into other ATM service categories is routed through a packet switch fabric.

  • Patent number: 8391165
Abstract: Multimedia IMS communications are established by matching callee capabilities with caller preferences and identifying a URI parameter in response thereto. When a session initiation protocol (SIP) request identifying caller preferences for an internet communication session and an identified callee is received (602), a determination is made of whether the identified callee is a registered address of record (AOR) or not (604). If the identified callee is a registered AOR (604), a uniform resource identifier (URI) parameter and a globally routable user agent URI (GRUU) associated with callee capabilities are identified (608, 612, 614). The URI parameter is used to create a modified SIP including the URI parameter (616) for sending (618) to an IMS enabled wireless communication device (120).

  • Patent number: 8391279
Abstract: A modem to process calling packets includes receiving a calling request packet from a software phone of a communication terminal, and determining if the calling request packet includes a special tag. If the IP phone is idle, the modem records a source IP address of the calling request packet, and modifies the source IP of the calling request packet to be an IP address of the IP phone, then the modem transmits the modified calling request packet to a server, and receives a calling reply packet from the server, then modifies a destination IP address of the calling reply packet to be the IP address of the communication terminal. The modem transmits the modified calling reply packet to the software phone to establish the call.

Abstract: A disclosed method for providing service provider information to a user communication device includes determining a telecommunications service provider associated with a targeted node such as a called party telephone number. An indicator of the telecommunications service provider is provided to and displayed by the user communication device. Communication services available to the communication device are then determined based at least in part on the identity of the telecommunications service provider. Indications of the available communication services may be presented to the communication device by audible or visual signals.

  • Patent number: 8374184
Abstract: A method and mobile terminal for acquiring a packet service in a mobile communication system is provided. A mobile terminal of the present invention determines, when it powers on, whether to register with a network on the basis of previously stored packet service usage frequency and updates, when using the packet service after registering with the network, the packet service usage frequency. The mobile terminal of the present invention can reduce waste of resources required for the packet service by reducing communication with the network. A packet service acquisition method of the present invention helps reduces a number of mobile terminals registered with a network, whereby the network can reduce its processing load, resulting in improvement of network throughput.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus for originating a Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) call from a user equipment (UE) device in a network environment including a circuit-switched (CS) network and an IP multimedia subsystem (IMS) network to a called party are disclosed. In one illustrative example, when the SIP call is originated by the UE device in the CS network domain, a SIP Invite message which includes a SIP Uniform Resource Indicator (URI) or Tel URI of the called party is sent from the UE device to the IMS network (e.g. to an application server (AS) node). At the AS node, a pool of E.164 numbers are maintained as IP multimedia routing numbers (IMRNs) which are utilized for mapping to or otherwise associating with called party URIs. Thus, the AS node dynamically allocates a select E.164 number with respect to the called party's URI received from the UE device, and returns it to the UE device in a SIP Response message, e.g., a SIP 380 (Alternative Service) message. Subsequently, the dynamically-allocated E.
