  • Patent number: 8363665
Abstract: A type of network traffic associated with a packet received from a remote node of an access network is determined. A first interface logic routes the packet to a radio network controller (RNC) if the packet is received from an Internet protocol-basestation (IP-BTS) access network and destined to a packet core network. The RNC forwards the packet to a component of the packet core network. A second interface logic routes the packet to the component of the packet core network, including aggregating other packets of the same type received from other remote nodes, if the packet is received from a femto cell and destined to the packet core network. A breakout logic routes the packet to a destination of the Internet directly to enable the packet to reach the Internet without having to route the packet to the component of the packet core network, if the packet is destined to the Internet.

  • Patent number: 8355335
Abstract: A method is disclosed that enables the monitoring, evaluation, and adjustment of a telecommunications network's audio-signal loss plan. The method can be implemented at a data-collection server, in which the server accumulates voice-quality measurement statistics from various nodes in the network. Such nodes include telecommunications endpoints, media gateways, private-branch exchanges, teleconference bridges, and so forth. The different types of statistics that can be acquired include voice activity detection, average speech level, average noise level, and so forth. The server accumulates the statistical data from the various nodes for multiple calls and over an extended period of time. The server is also able to compare the statistics against a theoretical model that is a function of the loss plan, at least in part. For example, the comparisons that the data-collection server performs can be used to determine why certain calls have been reported as having unsatisfactory quality.

  • Patent number: 8351421
Abstract: A system and method for sending long distance telephone calls over the Internet utilizes cost and quality of service data to optimize system performance and to minimize the cost of completing the calls. The system utilizes a network of gateways connected to the Internet. The gateways receive calls from various service providers and convert the analog calls into data packets which are then placed onto the Internet. Similarly, the gateways take data packets off the Internet, convert the data packets back into analog format, and provide the analog telephone calls to the same or another service provider. Then system periodically checks the quality of communications between each of the gateways, and uses this information, in combination with cost information, to determine how to route the calls over the Internet. Special addressing protocols can be used by a system embodying the invention to reduce or eliminate unnecessary signaling between gateways as call setup procedures are carried out.

  • Patent number: 8345671
Abstract: In one embodiment, a scheme is disclosed for managing call routing in a network environment including a circuit-switched (CS) network and an IP multimedia subsystem (IMS) network. When a call is originated by a user equipment (UE) device in the CS network, call information associated with the call is provided to a call continuity control function (CCCF) network node disposed in the IMS network. At the CCCF node, a pool of E.164 numbers are maintained as IP multimedia routing numbers (IMRNs) which are mapped to or otherwise associated with called party numbers. The CCCF node dynamically allocates a select IMRN with respect to a called party number received from the UE device and returns it to the UE device. The dynamically allocated IMRN is then utilized for routing the call towards the called party.

Abstract: A VOIP service and method is provided which comprises an redirecting dialer device (RDD), which connects a telephone to a POTS circuit. Responsive to DTMF signals from the telephone representative of a long telephone distance number, the RDD intercept the DTMF signals and transits alternative DTMF signals representative of an alternative telephone number of a PSTN/VOIP gateway server. Once connected to the PSTN/VOIP gateway server, the RDD then transmits the DTMF signals associated with the original long distance number. The VOIP gateway server is operative to convert the analog signals from the telephone into digital and packetized VOIP data which is transmitted through a public or private IP-based network to a remote telecommunication device associated with the original long distance telephone number. If the DTMF signals from the telephone are representative of a local telephone number, the RDD is operative to forgo transmitting the alternative DTMF signals.

Abstract: A device receives an emergency call invite generated by a user device associated with an Internet protocol (IP) multimedia subsystem (IMS) media gateway, and forwards the emergency call invite to a location resource function/route determination function (LRF/RDF) device for determining public safety answering point (PSAP) routing information. The device receives, from the LRF/RDF device, the PSAP routing information based on the emergency call invite, and routes the emergency call invite to a particular PSAP based on the PSAP routing information. If the emergency call invite is routed to a legacy PSAP, the emergency call is routed to the legacy PSAP via legacy mobile switching center (MSC) direct trunks. If the emergency call invite is routed to an IP PSAP, the emergency call is routed to the IP PSAP via an IP connection.

Abstract: Network devices in a multicast network exchange multicast optimization data to improve efficiency of multicasting in the network. A protocol, e.g., a routing protocol or a multicast protocol, may be extended to allow the network devices to exchange the multicast optimization data. Alternatively, a separate protocol may be established for exchanging MOD. A network device may receive a message from an upstream device located between the device and a source for a multicast group, wherein the message includes multicast optimization data that specifies at least one criterion for selecting an upstream device. The device may use the data to intelligently select an optimal upstream device for receiving multicast using any of a variety of criteria to rank the upstream routers, such as minimization of multicast traffic duplication, load balancing current bandwidth levels, and avoiding paths experiencing communication delays.

Abstract: A method for realizing paging in a mobile switching center (MSC) pool includes the following steps. An MSC server selects a media gateway (MGW) from more than one MGW connected to a base station controller (BSC)/radio network controller (RNC), delivers a paging message of an international mobile station identity (IMSI) paging type to the selected MGW, and stores a corresponding relation between an IMSI carried in the paging message and the MSC server in the MGW which is connected to the BSC/RNC and does not receive the paging message. The MGW that does not receive the paging message receives a paging response message sent by the BSC/RNC, determines an MSC server corresponding to an IMSI carried in the paging response message by looking up the corresponding relation between the IMSI and the MSC server stored therein, and routes the received paging response message to the corresponding MSC server. Several other methods and devices for realizing paging are also provided.

Abstract: An improved packet handler for VoIP cable modems and other high-speed digital devices includes a direct communication link via hardware among internal processing components. Incoming and outgoing digital information packets are filtered into MAC packets, voice PDU packets, and non-voice PDU packets, such that priority can be given to relaying voice packets and minimizing potential voice delay within the cable network. Hardware components, including specialized logic circuitry, modify voice packets to an appropriate signal form for subsequent signal processing or signal transmission. Proprietary bus communication protocols can also be provided to facilitate relay of packets between a central processing unit (CPU) and a digital signal processor (DSP) within a VoIP cable modem. Line cards including subscriber line interface circuit (SLIC) and subscriber line audio processing circuit (SLAC) components provide analog-to-digital (A/D) and digital-to-analog (D/A) conversion functionality.
