  • Patent number: 8135004
Abstract: Disclosed herewith is a multi-plane cell switch fabric system in which each switching unit functions asynchronously with others. The system executes distribution/restoration operations without lowering the switching capacity to reorder cells that arrive in random order from a plurality of switches just as they were in original flows and packets respectively with a small hardware capacity. In the system, the distribution unit divides each variable length packet addressed to the same destination into fixed length cells and sends those divided cells by a unit of integer multiple of the number of switches. On the other hand, the reordering unit, while holding cells that arrive in random order from each switching unit (switching units 1 to M) in a receive buffer, separates only the header information from each cell and holds the header information in a retry queue.

Abstract: A multi-plane cell switch fabric system prevents a decrease of the effective switching capacity when switching the variable-length packets. Distribution units classify input variable-length packets for each address, arranges the packets by a first division length unit, divides the packets into fixed-length cell payloads by a second division length unit that is an integer multiple being twice or more as large as the first division length unit, and forms a fixed-length cell by providing destination information, a source ID, a sequential number, and packet head tail information to each of the cell payloads. The cells are distributed to all the switching units one by one whenever the cells are collected to be the same number as the plural switching units. The reordering units classify the cells, reorder the sequential number in an original order, and reassemble the packets by the packet head tail information of the cell.

Abstract: A high capacity network comprises a plurality of edge nodes with asymmetrical connections to a plurality of switch planes, each switch plane comprising fully meshed fast-switching optical switch units. Upstream wavelength channels from each source edge node connect to different switch planes in a manner which ensures that upstream wavelength channels from any two edge nodes connect to a common switch unit in at most a predefined number, preferably one, of switch planes. Thus, switch units in different switch planes connect to upstream channels from orthogonal subsets of source edge nodes. In contrast, downstream wavelength channels from a switch unit in each switch plane connect to one set of sink edge nodes. In an alternate arrangement, the upstream and downstream asymmetry may be reversed.

  • Patent number: 6973079
Abstract: A method and apparatus for reallocating switching circuitry in a switching fabric are disclosed. The switching fabric is used to permit data transfer among a plurality of interface units each having a plurality of data ports. The switching fabric is partitionable into a plurality of switch planes such that each switch plane can be assigned to transfer data associated with like data ports of the interface units. Each switch plane includes multiple switching channels each assignable to transfer data associated with one data port of one of the interface units, in a full implementation. The number of interface units is less than the number of switching channels in a switch plane, then the reallocation is performed such that multiple channels of at least one switch plane can be assigned to transfer data of multiple ports of at least one of the interface units. This results in switch plane channels that would otherwise be unused being utilized to transfer data.

  • Patent number: 6700886
Abstract: An asynchronous serial crosspoint switch is word synchronized to each of a number of transceiver circuits. The crosspoint switch circuit generates both a master bit clock and a master word clock signal. A transceiver circuit recovers the master bit clock signal from an incoming high-speed serial data stream using a clock and data recovery circuit. The recovered bit clock signal is used as a timing signal by which data is serialized and transmitted to the crosspoint switch circuit. The data stream transmitted to the switch circuit is frequency locked to the master bit clock signal, such that the serial data stream need only be phase adjusted with a data recovery circuit. To recover word timing, the switch circuit issues alignment words to the transceivers during link initialization. The transceivers perform word alignment and establish a local word lock. Alignment words are then reissued to the switch circuit using the local word clock.

Abstract: Apparatus and method for establishing call connection state in packet data communication system. The apparatus controls a Service General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) Support Node (SGSN) to avoid establishing a call connection state associated with an erroneous Gateway GPRS Support Node (GGSN). The SGSN attempts to establish a call connection state with a GGSN connected to the SGSN, and stores the attempt result information in a specific memory. In this case, the memory stores information indicating success or failure of the attempt directed to the specific GGSN, and call setup attempt time information, etc. Thereafter, if a call setup operation associated with the specific GGSN is re-attempted, then information associated with the specific GGSN is read from information pre-stored in the memory. Based on the read information, it is determined whether a call setup operation directed to the specific GGSN is reattempted, or another call setup operation directed to another GGSN is newly attempted.

Abstract: A high-speed router backplane is disclosed. The disclosed construction and layout techniques enable the construction of a reliable, high-layer-count, and economical backplane for routers and the like that use signaling across the backplane at trace speeds of 2.5 Gbps or greater. Specific ranges of differential trace geometry characteristics, with significant single-ended coupling to adjacent ground planes, have been found to provide the parameters needed for such signaling. New trace routing and layering techniques also help in the realization of a backplane embodiment containing roughly 600 operable high-speed differential pairs, while also providing sufficient electromagnetic interference management to allow power distribution to occur within the same backplane.
