  • Patent number: 8081588
Abstract: A mobile communication device has a wireless transceiver and one or more processors for communicating data in a wireless communication system. The one or more processors are operative to receive a plurality of data packets of varying payload size in a queue; associate one or more of the data packets from the queue into a group, such that a total size of the group is at or near a maximum transmissible unit (MTU) size of a data frame; cause the one or more data packets associated into the group to be formatted into the data frame for data transmission via the wireless transceiver; and repeat, for a plurality of data frames, the associating and formatting, for communicating the data via the wireless transceiver in the wireless communication system. By associating the data packets into groups having the MTU size, data throughput of the data transmission is increased.

  • Patent number: 8051199
Abstract: A method and system for assigning self-routing addresses to nodes in a network with arbitrary, including irregular, topology is provided. The method and system are useful in packet-switched networks and in particular optical packet-switched networks for reducing processing associated with routing packets. Each self-routing address encodes a set of paths from all nodes in the network to the destination node. In an embodiment of the invention each output port of each node in a network sends a packet in response to the state of a bit in the self-routing address in a packet. Alternatively, each node address in the network is mapped to a bit in a self-routing address. Furthermore, a node can have multiple self-routing addresses encoding different sets of paths from all other nodes in the network to the node. In addition, hierarchical networks are included among the networks suitable for self-routing addresses.

Abstract: According to one embodiment, a routing tree may be determined by facilitating communication of a first network and a second network. The first network comprises first switches and uses a first routing protocol, and the second network comprises second switches and uses a second routing protocol. The intersection of the first and second switches comprises gateway switches. A gateway switch enables creation of a second routing tree of the second routing protocol. The second routing tree has virtual links and a virtual root switch representing a first root switch of the first network. The second switches generate minimum link cost tunnels using information from the second routing protocol. A first routing tree of the first routing protocol is extended with the tunnels to merge the first routing tree and the second routing tree.

The network identifies the intermediary network best suited for offloading the packet flow and then develops a routing policy based on Multiprotocol Label Switching or other circuit-switching type techniques. This ensures that the packets of the packet flow are automatically forwarded to a peering router connected to the identified intermediary network, and ensures that the peering router automatically outputs the packets of the packet flow to the identified intermediary network in a manner that bypasses autonomous routing decisions by the routers of the network.

Abstract: A method and system for encoding a set of range labels for each parameter field in a packet classification key in such a way as to require preferably only a single entry per rule in a final processing stage of a packet classifier. Multiple rules are sorted accorded to their respective significance. A range, based on a parameter in the packet header, is previously determined. Multiple rules are evaluated according to an overlapping of rules according to different ranges. Upon a determination that two or more rules overlap, each overlapping rule is expanded into multiple unique segments that identify unique range intersections. Each cluster of overlapping ranges is then offset so that at least one bit in a range for the rule remains unchanged. The range segments are then converted from binary to Gray code, which results in the ability to determine a CAM entry to use for each range.

Abstract: Dynamic real-time quality management of packetized communications in a network environment. Packetized communications are monitored by and exchanged between wireless Access Points (APs) and wireless terminals or by quality monitoring modules located within network segments or at network vertices. The processing unit analyzes the packetized communications to identify communication signatures associated with the packetized communications. The processor then uses these signatures to identify network impediments to the exchange of the packetized communications. These impediments may take the form of coding problems in which case an appropriate coding scheme is employed by the programmable COder/DECoder (CODEC) to convert incoming packetized communications to incoming user communications, and outgoing user communications to outgoing packetized communications. These impediments may also take the form of communication problems along and between the various network segments.

Abstract: A system and method for name binding for multiple packet data network access is provided. A method for communications device operation includes attaching to a first packet data network through an access network, thereby creating an access point name, triggering a connection to a second packet data network through the access network, and receiving an acknowledgement to the trigger. The triggering occurs over the access point name, and the acknowledgement comprises an address for the communications device. The address is allocated by a gateway for the second packet data network, and the address is allocated based on a binding generated from an identifier of the communications device, an identifier of the access point name, and a parameter.

Abstract: A method and system for selectively paging user equipment in a communication network is disclosed. The selective paging is implemented with a set of rules that determine whether a packet triggers a page request to user equipment. The rules can be dynamic and can discard unwanted packets to avoid waste of system resources, disruptions in service, and draining of a user equipment's battery life. The selective paging can be implemented on a serving gateway (SGW), a packet data network gateway (PGW), a mobility management entity, or a combination of the three. The selective paging can use information regarding the state of the user equipment and other rule-based criteria to determine whether packets received by a gateway trigger a page of the user equipment.

Abstract: This invention discloses a method, apparatus, and system for packet transmission. The method for packet transmission includes: configuring the two logical interfaces of a bidirectional tunnel to operate in bridge mode; at the first logical interface of the two, encapsulating Layer 2 packets and the protocol type information in tunnel packets and transmitting the packets to the peer through the bidirectional tunnel; at the second logical interface of the two, transmitting the tunnel packets to the corresponding Layer 2 protocol stack for processing according to the protocol type information in the received tunnel packets. The present invention enables the logical interfaces of a bidirectional tunnel to operate as Layer 2 ports to transmit Layer 2 packets.

Abstract: A method for establishing a packet switched call at an access terminal, which is processing an established circuit switched call, enables a user to be informed that the packet switched call has been requested. The method comprises adding a call type indication to a call setup message in a serving network, where the call type indication indicates that the packet switched call is requested to be setup in a packet data radio access network in the serving network (step 1105). A message indicating that the packet switched call has been requested is then transmitted from a circuit switched base station to the access terminal (step 1115). A message indicating that the packet switched call has been accepted is then transmitted from the circuit switched base station to the mobile switching center (step 1125).

The structural matching engine includes an active node processor (ANP) configured to process a state of an active list to determine possible future states of a non-deterministic finite automaton (NFA). The ANP processes the state according to rules. The structural matching engine includes an active list processor (ALP) configured to initiate a lookup for a token value corresponding to the state of the active list. The ALP provides a next sate of the active list to the ANP for processing according to the rules upon completion of the processing of the state by the ANP, wherein the possible future states of the NFA are linked by the ALP to form a target list, the target list stacked on top of the active list in a data structure.
