Abstract: A customer central location (CCL) communicates with multiple remote wireless devices employing mutually incompatible data formats or short message service (SMS) protocols. A communication, from the CCL to a remote device or from a remote device to the CCL, passes through a short message arbitrator (SMA), which determines the identifying characteristic(s) of the device receiving the communication. From the identifying characteristic(s), the short message arbitrator determines the expected data format and the transmission path to the device. The SMA converts the communication into the expected data format and transmits the communication over the appropriate transmission path.

  • Patent number: 6842440
Abstract: A system and method for wireless communication between a plurality of subscriber units and a base station, the base station communicating information signals from an originating source to a destination subscriber unit over a channel at an assigned one of a plurality of frequencies using repetitive time frames, each said time frame comprising a sequence of time slots. The channel is defined as having the same one or more time slots from the sequence of time slots in one or more of the time frames. The base station includes a central processing unit capable of assigning a duration of time for the information signals being sent to the destination subscriber unit. The duration equals the duration of one or more time slots in the same frame. The central processing unit maintains a memory of which time slots of each time frame have been assigned and provides the time slot assignment, and therefore channel assignment, by consulting said memory.

  • Patent number: 6842441
Abstract: A method and apparatus for transmitting a burst of data over a supplemental channel on just one leg of a handoff by changing the maximum allowed burst duration of the data to be transmitted over the supplemental channel as a function of the future and/or current characteristics of the communication link of the leg(s) of the handoff. The data is then transmitted over just one leg of handoff using the maximum allowed burst duration. By changing the parameters of the data, the data may still be acceptably received at the mobile terminal over just one leg of the soft handoff even when the strength of the pilot signal used for the supplemental channel changes significantly. In an illustrative embodiment of the invention the stability of the communication link is used as a way of ascertaining the future conditions of the communications link.

Abstract: According to the present invention, different frequency reuse patterns are used when scheduling critical and non-critical data transmissions. More specifically, the present invention uses a first reuse pattern for scheduling the transmission of critical data and a second reuse pattern for scheduling the transmission of non-critical data. The invention can be applied to any inbound or outbound time slotted protocol that have message fragments spanning over one or more time slots. The reuse pattern can be varied slot by slot, to use a less aggressive reuse for communicating critical data and a more aggressive reuse for communicating non-critical data. As a result, data can be communicated more reliably and throughput can be increased by protecting critical data transmissions via a less aggressive reuse.

Abstract: A microprocessor reads the information such as directions of arrival about a desired wave and an undesired wave for every terminal station and for every hopping frequency, and their receiving powers, and the like, from a desired wave/undesired wave information inputting unit. On the basis of the information items, the microprocessor calculates the weight values of a transmitting section and a receiving section for every terminal station and every hopping frequency, and stores them in a weight value table. At the time of performing radio communication, the microprocessor reads the weight values of the receiving section and the transmitting section corresponding to every terminal station and every hopping frequency from the weight value table every time the frequency is hopped, and sets them in attenuators, and phase shifters. As a result, the optimum directivity pattern is formed for every hopping frequency, and high-quality communication can be thereby achieved.

Abstract: The present invention provides such a need by utilizing a frequency offset differential pulse position modulation scheme to transmit data between computing devices within a wireless network system. The differential pulse position modulation component of the scheme enables the present invention to provide relative immunity to interference for the system. In particular, such immunity from interference is achieved by utilizing a blanking time between pulse positions, which is large enough to allow the interference between frequency offset—differential pulse position modulation pulses to subside. The frequency offset component of the scheme enables the system to utilize multiple frequency channels to enable the system to achieve higher data rates. In particular, by utilizing a time offset between the frequency channels, the blanking time can be reduced, thereby increasing the amount of data that can be transmitted with a set period of time.

Abstract: The idea of the invention is the allocation of transmission resources in several separate steps. In the first step, the available transmission resources are dynamically divided between the different networks. In the second step, the networks divide the resources that have been allocated for their use among their users by their own channel allocation methods. In one embodiment, a given minimum capacity wherewith the network achieves a predetermined minimum quality of service is permanently allocated to some or all of the networks. As the capacity requirement increases, the necessary amount of additional capacity is allocated to the operator in excess of this minimum capacity. The additional capacity is then allocated either from resources separately reserved for this purpose that are common to the networks, or by borrowing it from capacity that is allocated to another network but falls outside the minimum capacity of said network.

Abstract: In a messaging system, message traffic is transmitted on one or more traffic channels T1, T2 and the allocation of groups S1, S2 of receivers to the traffic channels T1, T2 is controlled by information transmitted on a bulletin board channel BB. A predetermined number of frames before a change in the traffic channel allocation, a countdown value is transmitted in the relevant traffic channel T1 and the countdown value is decremented in each subsequent frame. Before the countdown value reaches zero, the groups of receivers S1, S2 retune to the bulletin board channel, receive their new channel allocations and retune to the traffic channel indicated for their group. The frame timings of the different traffic channels T1, T2 are staggered to reduce the peak power required to transmit message bursts in these channels.

Abstract: An architecture for providing high-speed access over frequency-division multiplexed (FDM) channels allows transmission of ethernet frames and/or other data across a cable transmission network or other form of FDM transport. The architecture involves downstream and upstream FDM multiplexing techniques to allow contemporaneous, parallel communications across a plurality of frequency channels. Furthermore, the architecture allows a central concentrator to support a plurality of remote devices that each have guaranteed bandwidth through connection-oriented allocations of bi-directional data flows. The upstream and downstream bandwidth allocation can support symmetrical bandwidth as well as asymmetrical bandwidth in either direction. The architecture generally can be used to support connection-oriented physical layer connectivity between a remote device and the central concentrator.

Abstract: The invention relates to the transfer of intersystem connections, wherein the quality of a transfer to a supplying base station in a first radiocommunication system determined at a given moment by a subscriber station is compared to a threshold value. If the value falls below said threshold, a compressed mode is activated and measurements are carried out by the subscriber station in relation to the transfer qualities to neighbouring base stations in a second radiocommunication network. On the basis of said measurements, the subscriber station selects a base station for the transfer of a connection. If the value falls below the second threshold, information sequences in the organization channels of the selected base stations are detected by the subscriber station.

Abstract: A system and method for mapping a combined frequency division duplexing (FDD) Time Division Multiplexing (TDM)/Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) downlink subframe for use with half-duplex and full-duplex terminals in a communication system. Embodiments of the downlink subframe vary Forward Error Correction (FEC) types for a given modulation scheme as well as support the implementation of a smart antennae at a base station in the communication system. Embodiments of the system are also used in a TDD communication system to support the implementation of smart antennae. A scheduling algorithm allows TDM and TDMA portions of a downlink to efficiently co-exist in the same downlink subframe and simultaneously support full and half-duplex terminals. The algorithm further allows the TDM of multiple terminals in a TDMA burst to minimize the number of map entries in a downlink map.
