    Abstract: Described herein are systems, apparatuses, and methods for performing proximity-based authentication operations using received signal strength indicator (RSSI) values. An expected proximity of devices to be paired is used to determine whether to execute a wireless personal area network (WPAN) connection process. This expected proximity is correlated with the RSSI value of received signals. By utilizing the RSSI value of received signals, embodiments do not utilize any additional hardware for performing the described proximity-based authentication process, and in some implementations, do not utilize any additional processes or routines to determine an RSSI value (e.g., some devices utilize RSSI values in order to adjust output power levels of transmitted signals, and thus, already execute processes or routines to determine RSSI values).

    Abstract: Unbiased media contention in the presence of conflicting wireless operation of data transmission includes beginning media contention only during Bluetooth® operation; treating the Bluetooth® operation as a rejection of media transmission; holding a backoff timer associated with a backoff period steady for a specified duration; upon immediate completion of the Bluetooth® operation, WiFi contends with a small backoff value when media access is busy; using a small random number for the backoff period during a non-Bluetooth® data transfer period; and keeping an overall backoff timer unbiased for a duration of the data transmission. The specified duration may include an end of the Bluetooth® operation or a maximum backoff time that is reached. The random number for the backoff period includes uniform distribution in a contention window. A mean backoff timer value equals a uniform mean value minus a ratio of a Bluetooth® operation period to a total backoff period.

The channel allocation system allows registration of licensed service providers, or access to existing licensed service provider databases, to obtain required information of communication characteristics to form protected service contours. Based on the protected service contours, the availability of channels in areas is pre-computed. In addition, unlicensed or unregistered users, such as TV band devices (TVBDs), register with the channel allocation system and request channel lists of channels to operate on with a query. The system performs an iterative search of areas with successively finer resolution and identifies channels that might be included in a channel list in response to the query.
