  • Patent number: 8514749
Abstract: The present invention extends to methods, systems, and computer program products for routing requests for duplex applications. Embodiments of the invention provide a multi-machine scalability mechanism for duplex messages patterns based on a polling mechanism. Client requests and polls can be distributed to service instances running within a cluster of machines by a session-unaware load balancer. Messages to and from a given client can be accessed by any service instance in the cluster service instance, which allows capacity scale-out and seamless failover between service instances. A coordinated inbound message store is used to affinitize application requests to a particular service instance. A coordinated outbound message store is used to route application responses from the machine running the application to the machine where a polling request arrived.

  • Patent number: 8509097
Abstract: A data communication network (DCN) having a plurality of network devices coupled to the DCN with at least one of the network devices having a “boot once” connectivity manager processor (CMP). The CMP receives its power over the DCN rather than from the power applied to the network devices. The CMP can execute special operating system code and maintain network connectivity even if the network device itself is powered off, is being booted or is otherwise non-functional. The CMP is also coupled to the network device's memory so that it may respond to out-of-band polling requests for device status information from network management tools. With CMP, network administrators can monitor the boot process of network devices, determine that a network device is non-functional due to power loss and can maintain an accurate inventory status of spare network devices that are stored un-powered in a spares closet.

  • Patent number: 8493951
Abstract: A technique for combining transmission bandwidths of several mobile stations (MS1, MS2) is disclosed. A master mobile station (MS1) establishes (7-0) a WLAN base station communicating with WLAN client terminals (CT). One or more slave mobile stations (MS2) may detect a predefined network identifier and join the WLAN network. The master (MS1) assigns IP addresses for the client terminals (CT) and slave mobile stations (MS2). The master also resolves DNS queries in cooperation with external DNS servers. Traffic, including internet packets (IP1-IP4), between the client terminals and various internet hosts (HO) is tunneled over multiple simultaneous transmission paths between the master (MS1) and a multiplexing/demultiplexing computer (SM). The inventive bandwidth combination technique is transparent to the client terminals (CT) and the internet hosts (HO).

  • Patent number: 8489752
Abstract: A system and method for controlling communications between a plurality of clients and a central component. An embodiment of the invention includes one or more buses that connect the clients and the central component. This embodiment also includes a control module that is configured to receive ASK messages from the clients and issue GO commands to the clients. Each ASK message represents a request from a client to access the central component. Each GO command to the client represents permission for that client to access the central component. The control module comprises delay stages that delay the GO command. The delays may be different from client to client. The number of delay stages is chosen so that for all clients, the delay between the issuance of a GO command and the receipt at the central component of communications from the clients is the same.

  • Patent number: 8472941
Abstract: Polling methods for use in a communication system, such as a fixed wireless communication system, are described. The fixed wireless communication system includes at least one wireless base unit and a plurality of fixed-location wireless transceiver units, where each transceiver unit is, for example, located at a home residence and coupled to a personal computer (PC). In one particular polling method, a wireless transceiver unit detects a failure of a primary energy source, switches to a battery backup for power, and sends a message to the wireless base unit indicating such failure. The message initiates the wireless base unit to poll the wireless transceiver unit on a periodic basis for status information. During the failure, a data traffic channel established between the units is torn down to conserve power at the wireless transceiver unit. Once the primary energy source is restored, the data traffic channel is brought back up and the periodic polling is terminated.

  • Patent number: 8473647
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for enhancing efficiency (e.g., reducing power consumption and bus activity) in a data bus. In an exemplary embodiment, a client-driven host device state machine switches among various states, each comprising a different polling frequency. A client device on the data bus (e.g., serial bus) checks for non-productive periods of polling activity, and upon discovering such a period, informs the host. The state machine then alters its polling scheme; e.g., switches to a lower state comprising a reduced polling frequency, and polling continues at this reduced frequency. In one variant, the client device continuously monitors itself to determine whether it has any data to transmit to a host device and if so, the host is informed, and the state machine restarts (e.g., to its highest polling state). By eliminating extraneous polling, power consumption and serial bus activity is optimized, potentially on both the host and the client.

  • Patent number: 8467313
Abstract: The present invention provides a system and method of determining available bandwidth at a physical layer (PHY) device at a server on a broadband network. A link layer controller of a master administrator adaptively polls a PHY device over a set of time intervals. During polling, the controller places a PHY device's address on a line of a bus and awaits a response from the PHY device. Based upon the response from the PHY device, the administrator can determine whether the PHY device has available bandwidth. The link layer controller uses this information to recalculate its polling scheme to better make use of the available bandwidth over the shared transmission medium to which each PHY device in the network is attached.

An access point may aggregate stations with flows carrying traffic having similar characteristics, e.g., VoIP flows. The access point may schedule these stations together in an overall service period. The access point may serve each station in a respective service period within the overall service period. The access point may send a multi poll frame at the start of the overall service period to indicate the start time and/or service period for each station. Each station may decide to power down until its start time. The service periods for the stations may overlap one another. The service period for each station may cover an initial transmission as well as additional transmission and/or retransmission. If additional transmission and/or retransmission are not needed for a given station, then the next station may be served right away.

  • Patent number: 8320406
Abstract: A method and apparatus for adaptively obtaining bandwidth requests in a broadband wireless communication system. The method and apparatus includes dynamically varying technique combinations enabling a plurality of users to efficiently request bandwidth from a shared base station. A user may “piggyback” a new bandwidth request upon, or set a “poll-me bit” within, presently allocated bandwidth. A base station may poll users, individually or in groups, by allocating unrequested bandwidth for new requests. Polling may respond to a “poll-me bit,” and/or it may be adaptively periodic at a rate based on communication status parameters, such as recent communication activity and connection QoS levels. Group polling permits a possibility of collisions. Polling policies may be established for dynamically varying user groups, or may be determined for each user. Dynamic selection of appropriate polling techniques makes use of efficiency benefits associated with each technique.

  • Patent number: 8321503
Abstract: A back-end locator service can be utilized to identify a specific computing device, from among multiple computing devices in a domain, that is the most appropriate computing device to handle a particular type of request for data or other resources. The data or resources hosted by the domain can be divided among multiple computing devices. The domain can expose a network-based application program interface where successive requests by a client computing device become more specific as to the data or resources requested. Responses from the computing devices in the domain can, at some point in time, be informed by the back-end locator service and can comprise location-specific resource identifiers. The client computing device can utilize such location specific resource identifiers to direct further communications to the appropriate, specific computing device without having to incur redirection inefficiencies.

  • Patent number: 8306051
Abstract: A communication protocol for a lighting control system having a plurality of control devices coupled to a communication link uses a polling technique to coordinate the transmission of digital messages between the control devices. When the control devices are powered up, one of the control devices is established as a “master” device. During normal operation, the master device transmits a standard poll message to each of the control devices in succession using a unique semi-permanent Poll ID for each of the control devices. The master device periodically transmits a Poll-ID-Request poll message to the control devices allow those devices that do not have a Poll ID to request a Poll ID. If a control device determines either that the master device is not transmitting poll messages to it, or that another control device has the same Poll ID, the control device drops its Poll ID and acquires another Poll ID.

Abstract: Providing for improved acknowledgment and retransmission protocols for wireless communication is described herein. By way of example, the acknowledgment and retransmission protocols can comprise including a poll element, or reply command, within a data unit that is part of a wireless transmission. A timer is set following sending the wireless transmission, and if a reply is not received within expiration of the timer, retransmission is triggered. According to specific aspects, retransmission comprises resending the data unit that includes the poll element or reply command. In this manner, redundant retransmission can be mitigated, whether because a receiver fails to successfully receive one or more subsets of the wireless transmission, or because the transmitter fails to obtain a reply to the wireless transmission.

  • Patent number: 8296619
Abstract: A method and an apparatus for indicating a temporary block flow (TBF) to which a piggybacked acknowledgement/non-acknowledgement (PAN) field is addressed. A method and apparatus of performing receive processing to reduce the probability of false acceptance of erroneous PANs are also disclosed. A transmit station generates a PAN check sequence (PCS) and performs a channel coding on a PAN field and the PCS. The transmit station scrambles the encoded bits of the PAN field and the PCS with a TBF-specific scrambling code. Because of the scrambling, the PCS decoding at a receive station will pass if the data block is received by an intended receive station, while the PCS decoding will fail if received by a non-intended receive station. Alternatively, the scrambling may be performed before the channel coding. Alternatively, the transmit station may combine the PAN field and a temporary flow identity (TFI) to generate a PCS.

  • Patent number: 8295839
Abstract: A wireless communication method and apparatus for recovering data following a serving cell change are disclosed. A wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) includes a status prohibit timer that delays the transmission of normal status reports that indicate the status of data, (i.e., PDUs), that was successfully received and/or not successfully received after a serving cell change status report is sent. A serving radio network controller (SRNC) transmits a sequence of packet data units (PDUs). The status prohibit timer is advanced and the WTRU sends a normal status report to the SRNC without a delay caused by the status prohibit timer. In another embodiment, the WTRU receives a radio link control (RLC) intelligence mode indicator signal that indicates whether a non-intelligent radio network controller (RNC) RLC operation or an intelligent RNC RLC operation is in effect, and the WTRU generates normal status reports based on the indication of the signal.

  • Patent number: 8296459
Abstract: With the advent of virtualization technologies, networks and routing for those networks can now be simulated using commodity hardware rather than actual routers. For example, virtualization technologies such as those provided by VMWare, XEN, or User-Mode Linux can be adapted to allow a single physical computing machine to be shared among multiple virtual networks by providing each virtual network user with one or more virtual machines hosted by the single physical computing machine, with each such virtual machine being a software simulation acting as a distinct logical computing system that provides users with the illusion that they are the sole operators and administrators of a given hardware computing resource. In addition, routing can be accomplished through software, providing additional routing flexibility to the virtual network in comparison with traditional routing. As a result, in some implementations, supplemental information other than packet information can be used to determine network routing.
