  • Patent number: 7120167
Abstract: A sorting section 64 in a restoration section 76 sorts out a packet for an intended service from a transport stream received according to the control of a reception control section 66. The sorted out packet is provided to an output section 70 and restored to NTSC signals. An audiovisual output section 72 (such as a TV set) receives the signals and outputs images and voices. The reception control section 66 acquires information on the type of contents chosen out of the transport stream through the sorting section 64, and further compares the contents type information with restorable contents type information recorded in a restorable contents type information recording section 68. Then, a determination is made whether or not the contents intended for restoration are restorable. Depending on the determination, the manner of process applied to the contents is changed. For example, the restoration of the contents is interrupted.

  • Patent number: 7103669
Abstract: Video communication over lossy packet networks such as the Internet is hampered by limited bandwidth and packet loss. The present invention provides a system for providing reliable video communication over these networks, where the system includes at least two jointly designed subsystems: (1) multiple state video coding system and (2) path diversity transmission system. Multiple state video coding combats the problem of error propagation that results from packet loss by coding the video into multiple independently decodable streams, each with its own prediction process and state. If one stream is lost the other streams can still be decoded to produce usable video, and furthermore, the correctly received streams provide bidirectional (i.e., previous and future) information that enables improved state recovery for the corrupted stream.

  • Patent number: 7085377
Abstract: Audio or other information is delivered to a user via a multi-stream digital broadcasting system in a partially-encrypted form. The information is encoded and separated into multiple bitstreams, at least a subset of which are left unencrypted. Both the encrypted and unencrypted bitstreams are received and stored by the user. A user is able, for at least a limited period of time, to access the information at a first quality level, e.g., an FM-quality level for audio information, without having the corresponding decryption key, by utilizing only the unencrypted bitstreams. The user can then access an electronic-commerce web site to purchase the decryption key. The key may be downloaded from the site to an information processing device of the user, and may be utilized to decrypt the partially-encrypted format, such that the user is provided with access to the information at a second quality level higher than the first quality level, e.g., a CD-quality level for audio information.

  • Patent number: 7046694
Abstract: A method and system are provided for the transmission and reception of an In-band On-channel (IBOC) FM-band digital audio broadcast (DAB) signal. The IBOC DAB signal is generated in the transmitter to substantially occupy the upper and lower sideband frequency regions in the RF emission mask for the conventional broadcast analog FM-band. Redundant source bit information is transmitted in both the upper and lower sidebands so that the loss of information in either one but not both sidebands due to large amounts of interference or distortion, caused by, for example, first-adjacent interference, does not deleteriously affect the IBOC DAB receiver performance. The system exhibits both frequency-diversity and time-diversity. The receiver determines which codeword bit estimate, corresponding to either upper or lower sideband signals, is less likely to be erroneous.

  • Patent number: 7031308
Abstract: A method for performing end-to-end “tree-based ordered multicasting” (TOM) which ensures collective integrity and consistency of distributed operations, and which is applicable to distributed multiparty collaboration and other multipoint applications. The TOM protocol performs cascaded total ordering of messages among on-tree hosts en route from senders to receivers, and does not require the building of a separate propagation graph to compute ordering information. TOM elects sequencer nodes dynamically based on address extensions of the multicast tree. Message ordering is performed by multicasting a message from each source node to receivers, unicasting a control message from a source node across a primary node to an ordering node for the designated multicast group or transmission in the tree, determining a binding sequence number for the message and a multicast to the receiver group, and delivering messages at end hosts according to the agreed-upon sequence numbers.

Abstract: A message structure is provided for assigning transmission profiles to individual modems for modem transmissions in an upstream direction, on a modem by modem basis. The profiles define a set of transmission parameters, e.g., forward error correction information, symbol rate, frequency, modulation type, etc. that the modem should use to optimize their transmission in the upstream direction in order to maximize throughput. The invention is applicable to both wireless and land-based communications systems, particularly those adhering to the Data-Over-Cable Service Interface Specifications (“DOCSIS”)—Radio Frequency Interface Specification standard, or other standards which are analogous to the DOCSIS standard. The message structure can consist of two parts—a first part that defines a plurality of different types of transmission profiles, and a second part that assigns a particular profile to a modem.
