  • Patent number: 7688828
Abstract: A modular Cable Modem Termination System (CMTS) includes a packet shelf operating a Data Over Cable Service Interface Specifications (DOCSIS) Media Access Control (MAC) framer. One or more downstream Physical Interface (PHY) shelves receive DOCSIS data from the packet shelf over a packet switched network and modulate the DOCSIS data for sending on a downstream path of a cable plant. One or more upstream PHY shelves send DOCSIS data received from an upstream path of the cable plant over the packet switched network to the packet shelf. By separating the PHY components from the MAC and from the system software, the PHY components for a Hybrid Fiber Coax (HFC) plant may be replaced with different PHY components for other access technologies such as wireless, Digital Subscriber Lines (DSL), Ethernet-to-the-Home, Fiber-to-the-Home, or fiber Passive Optical Networks (PONs).

  • Patent number: 7630357
Abstract: A distributed CMTS includes a head end, a downstream transmitter hub, and an upstream receiver hub. The head end transmits data packets to the downstream transmitter via a coupling packet data network. Each data packet is marked with a “measured delay” Quality of Service (QOS) and includes a time stamp that is based upon a clock of the head end and a delay tag. The downstream transmitter hub receives the plurality of data, adjusts the time stamps based upon the delay tags, smoothes the time stamps of the plurality of data packets and, based upon the smoothed time stamps, synchronizes its clock with the clock of the head end. The downstream transmitter hub then synchronizes a clock of the upstream receiver hub with the clock of the downstream transmitter hub. The upstream receiver hub may synchronize its clock to the clock of the head end using this technique.

  • Patent number: 7356051
Abstract: One embodiment of the present invention uses an abbreviated blanking period, in comparison to the standard VESA and CEA-EIA blanking periods, in order to send data, including low bandwidth, non-timing information, over one or more channels of the digital video link. By shortening the blanking period, the amount of time available for sending data in each scan line is increased, enabling the system to send more data over each channel. The inactive video portion of a scan line sent during vertical sync may also be used to send additional digital data. Shortening the blanking periods and/or using the inactive video sections of the horizontal scan lines adds to the overall data capacity of the link and may be used to send other digital data, such as multi-channel audio, video, control, timing, closed captioning or other digital data.

  • Patent number: 7072360
Abstract: Hybrid fiber/coax networks employ the existing cable plant used for cable TV and transmit data signals in a frequency bandwidth above that which is used for cable TV. The present system used point-to-point data links between intelligent network elements located in the feeder/distribution network to provide reliable, secure, bi-directional broadband access. Digital signals are terminated at the intelligent network elements, switched and regenerated for transmission across additional upstream or downstream data links as needed to connect a home to a headend or router. The intelligent network elements can be co-located with or replace the standard network elements. A tree-and-branch network architecture is therefore established in which each intelligent network element is assigned a routing ID employed in the point-to-point transmissions while leaving legacy analog signals unimpeded. In this manner, the data links are made over relatively short runs of coax cable, which can provide greater bandwidth.

Abstract: New firmware is attached to electronic mail from a computer of the service center to be transmitted towards a monitor device at the user side. The monitor device of the user side reads out the electronic mail from a mail server and downloads the electronic mail into its own apparatus. Then, the firmware is derived from the electronic mail and transmitted to an image formation apparatus that is the subject of transmission. The image formation apparatus receiving the firmware writes the new firmware into the flash ROM that is the subject of rewriting. Accordingly, increase of the communication traffic can be prevented and the load on the mail server can be alleviated in the case where the same firmware for a plurality of devices connected on a network is to be altered using an electronic mail system.

  • Patent number: 6587479
Abstract: A simple and low cost architecture for coupling wireless local area network signals between geographically distributed access points and centrally located internetworking devices. A cable access point (CAP) is associated with each respective microcell. Each CAP includes a remote bridge to convert such signals to a convenient transport format depending upon the available cabling. For example, if the available cabling is a cable television (CATV) plant, the transport signals are first converted to a T1 format and up-converted to a carrier frequency suitable for the CATV plant. Alternatively, the transport signals may be converted to IEEE 802.3 cable modem signals. If the available cabling is twisted pair telephone type wiring, the remote bridge converts the transport signals to a suitable Digital Subscriber Line (xDSL) format. The transport signals are collected at a central distribution or head end access point (HAP).

Abstract: A hybrid fiber/coaxial cable is attached to an autonomous controller which includes a wireless receiver, transmitter, and antenna. Typically, the autonomous controller is connected near the end of the cable which is remote from the headend. At least one other hybrid fiber/coaxial cable connected to the same headend or distribution hub, provides connectivity for cable data modems and set top boxes in an adjacent neighborhood or community. The second cable is attached to its own, respective autonomous controller which also has a wireless receiver, transmitter, and antenna. The two antennas in the adjacent neighborhoods constitute an antenna cluster. When the first cable's connection to the common headend is interrupted, thereby preventing service to the first neighborhood, its autonomous controller senses the interruption and responds by sending a wireless signal to the controller in the adjacent neighborhood.

Abstract: A system for synchronizing the upstream burst transmission in a cable system to a time specified by the cable head end is disclosed. The system includes a free running counter within a cable modem (CM) or network interface unit (NIU), along with logic to capture the value of this free running counter at the time a frame of MPEG-2 SYNC data arrives, to create a time tag stored in memory. A computer within the cable modem or network interface unit has access to the time tags in memory and the contents of a time synchronization message from the head end, also stored in memory. The computer contains a program to calculate the value of the local counter that corresponds to a time to transmit commanded by the cable system head end. The system includes logic within the CM or NIU to initiate an upstream burst transmission when the value of the local counter becomes equal to a calculated value, thus causing the cable modem to initiate its upstream burst transmission precisely at the time commanded by the head end.

Abstract: A local networking system, offers integrated communication services to multiple local voice stations and data terminals via a common transmission medium. This system, utilizing Frequency Division Multiplexing (FDM) signals as carrier, transports information with CSMA/CD protocol. Voice transmissions are organized in traditional TDMA format with fixed frame length and dynamically assigned time slots to avoid interference caused by other devices in the system. Data services operate in traditional CSMA/CD format, but restricted to specified blocks of time intervals. The voice service quality is guaranteed because the required channels and bandwidths, up to the designed maximum, are always available when needed. The grade of data service may be impacted by voice traffic volume which is automatically managed by data terminal's inherent design with CSMA/CD protocol. This unified digital multiplexing system is applicable to transmission media with restricted channels.
