  • Publication number: 20040100996
Abstract: A process of acquiring, transmitting and reconstructing data signals is disclosed. The process includes monitoring a timing reference signal produced by a timing reference and receiving an input data signals on input/output modules. The input data signals are sampled using one of an external sample clock and an internal sample clock. The process further includes recording an input rate, based on a number of samples received during an interval, a duration count, based on the number of cycles of the timing reference signal received between the first sample and the last sample in the sample interval, and a delay count, based on a number of cycles of the timing reference signal received between a start of the interval and a first sample clock cycle of the one of the external sample clock or the internal sample clock. Data packets are created, based on sampled input data and the measured input rate, the delay count for each interval.

  • Patent number: 6741617
Abstract: The invention relates to an arrangement for deriving an ancillary signal from a compressed digital video signal (e.g. MPEG). The ancillary signal comprises selected parts of the main signal, for example, the DC coefficients of I-pictures, or the unscrambled parts. The ancillary signal thus obtained can be used for display in a (multi-) picture-in-picture television receiver, or as an “appetizer” in order to encourage the user to pay a subscription fee. The ancillary signal can separately be recorded in digital video recorders so as to assist the user in finding the beginning of a scrambled program on tape. The ancillary signal can also be generated at the transmitter end and transmitted at a low bit rate. A decoder for decoding such an ancillary signal is considerably simpler and less expensive than a full-spec MPEG decoder.

Abstract: A high-speed wavelength-division multiplexed (WDM) network that provides compliant, “invisible” paths of adaptive capacity from an external information source to an external information sink is described. The WDM network includes a plurality of high-speed electronic edge switch modules that are connected by WDM optical links to parallel-plane switch core modules. Smearing distributors ensure that packets to be transferred to a given output link are distributed evenly among the planes of the core modules. Consequently, contention is resolved. Each edge switch is connected to each core module by a WDM optical link. For purposes of admission control, the capacity of the link, rather than the capacity of channels in the link, is considered. This provides much improved granularity in connection bandwidth. The smallest connection may be a few kb/s, while the largest connection may be link capacity. Each edge switch is also adapted to accept data from external sources in a plurality of formats.

Abstract: An 1:n or m:n path protection mechanism is provided. Rather than defining an automatic protection protocol, use is made of the existing tandem connection monitoring function, tandem connection reverse defect indication, and tandem connection trail trace identifier. Upon detection of a failure on the working path segment, the occurrence of this failure is communicated to the far end node by inserting forced RDI into the tandem connection as long as the failure persists. In the case of more than one protected paths, the failed path is identified by means of the unique trail trace identifier received on the protection path. In the case of several protection paths, one network node is defined as slave node which has to follow the switch-over initiated by the master node and choose the same protection path as the master node. Abstract: A method and apparatus for use where an incoming high speed data stream is first divided into N lower bandwidth channels and is then transmitted through the network to a receiver where it arrives with varying delays depending on the physical characteristics of the network. The high speed data stream is reconstructed by determining the different geographical delay parameters among the lower speed channels, by adjusting the transmission delays by alignment circuitry, and then by combining the lower speed signals into one high bandwidth channel. When one of the lower speed channels fails, the bandwidth is automatically re-adjusted using the remaining N−1 lines. When the failed channel is restored to an acceptable level of service, the communication protocol automatically re-adjusts the bandwidth to the full N channels. When the network indicates the loss of a line, the multiplexers at both ends of the link automatically compensate for the loss without any message exchange.

The mixing circuit combines signal samples read from the memory to produce four output signals each containing first and second channel samples. The resultant 8 channel samples are gated in a formatter with respective channel mute signals which, when asserted, effectively mute their corresponding channel sample.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for connecting daisy chained BTSs (Base Transceiver Stations) by utilizing a multiplexer and a demultiplexer is disclosed. The BSC (Base Station Controller) generates packets to be passed to the daisy chained BTS and multiplexes the packets to transmit them to the BTS. The BTS receives the multiplexed packets and demultiplexes the packets, and as a result of the demultiplexing, if the packets are for the respective BTS, then the respective BTS receives them and transmits the remaining packets to the next BTSs. Additionally, the daisy chained BTS being connected to other BTS generates packets to be passed to a BTS and decodes the transmitted packets. As a result of the decoding, if the packets are for the respective BTS, the respective demultiplexer passes the packets to the corresponding BTS; otherwise, it passes the packets to the BSC.

Abstract: A system and method is provided for synchronizing the presentation of audio data with video data. Audio transport packets are received through a demultiplexer from a multimedia transport stream. A transport stream synchronization manager is used to lock a system time clock, local to the demultiplexer, to a program clock reference provided through the multimedia transport stream. Presentation time stamps are provided with the audio transport packets to indicate when decoded audio data is to be output. A packetized elementary stream synchronization manager maintains synchronization by adding or dropping audio packets from the audio transport packets. If the packetized elementary stream manager is unable to acquire synchronization it must defer synchronization back to the transport stream synchronization manager. Otherwise, processed audio packets are passed to an elementary stream synchronization manager that attempts to synchronize the delivery of audio data through a sample rate conversion of the audio data.

Abstract: A method for enhancing transport packet demultiplexing and distribution in a digital transport demultiplexing system that inputs a stream of digital multimedia transport packets is provided. Each of the transport packets includes a packet identifier (PID) to identify the digital program or elementary stream to which it corresponds. Local packet information is generated for each of the transport packets, which is used in identifying and distributing the transport packets. A local header is created that includes the generated local packet information, and the local header is linked to its corresponding transport packet to create a modified transport packet. In this manner, each of the modified transport packets represents a self-contained digital transport packet having local distribution information contained therein. The demulitplexing apparatus performs the demultiplexing operation by transferring data packets into and out of circular data queues.

Abstract: An apparatus and method for demultiplexing a time and polarization multiplexed signal are described. The multiplexed signal is a combination of component signals, each of which is characterized by a polarization. The demultiplexer of the system includes an input interface over which the signal is received. A polarization demultiplexer receives the multiplexed signal and polarization demultiplexes the signal. Next, a time-demultiplexing stage time-demultiplexes the polarization-demultiplexed signal to recover the original component signals. A clock recovery circuit recovers the clock from the polarization-demultiplexed signal before time demultiplexing.

Abstract: The invention relates particularly to the switching of an SDH low order VC-3 using a high order switching apparatus, such as an STS switch. A low order VC-3 is aligned with a TU-3 pointer to form a TU-3. The TU-3 is mapped into a high order VC-3 type data structure which, in turn, is aligned with an AU-3 pointer to form an AU-3 type data structure. The AU-3 type data structure is suitable for switching by the high order switch. After switching, the AU-3 type data structure is combined with similar AU-3 type data structures and converted into an AU-4 suitable for transmission across an SDH/SONET network. Advantageously, the arrangement is such that each AU-3 pointer has the same fixed value. Hence, conversion to an AU-4 is achieved by a fixed pointer replacement operation.

Abstract: A signal router routes N inputs to M outputs. All inputs signals are ultimately applied to a data buss by spreading across multiple buss lines and time multiplexing. The data are read from the buss and written in identical images to K random access memories. The memories are addressed and read according to a different schedule for each of K output signals that are ultimately demultiplexed to M outputs. As each RAM image is read, another RAM image is written and vice versa. Since each RAM image contains the same data, the generation of signals from each RAM to supply each of the respective K output signals can be done at a rate that is substantially more independent of the input, buss, or RAM write operations than prior art techniques permit.
