  • Patent number: 7301988
Abstract: An enhanced spread-spectrum uplink technique provides more efficient packet transfer in a wireless network. A mobile station requests to utilize an uplink channel, typically, a physical dedicated channel. If the network will grant access, a base station sends back a channel-request-granted message, which specifies a transmission start time and length. The base station starts related downlink transmissions at the start time, and at a time thereafter, the mobile station starts sending packet data over the uplink physical dedicated channel. After a transmission of no more that the specified length, the mobile station ceases its uplink transmission on the dedicated channel, and the base station and/or the mobile station can immediately release one or more channel resources. The grant message and/or the subsequent signaling communications from the base station may also specify a modulation scheme and a channelization code for the uplink channel.

  • Patent number: 7263573
Abstract: In a wireless USB data transfers over UWB, software configures hardware thresholds to control data transfer in a manner that uses bandwidth for good connections over bad connections, given the high error rate experienced with wireless USB. Periodic transfers are first attempted before asynchronous transfers, as long as the periodic transfers are successful. When failures are occurring, the hardware includes a mechanism having a software-configurable threshold specifying the number of errors a given endpoint can tolerate before it is paused in the schedule. By pausing transfer attempts that are likely to again fail, endpoints with successful transfers are favored over those experiencing errors. When the number of active transfers pending exceeds a software-configurable notification threshold for isochronous endpoints, the hardware notifies the software of this state, corresponding to a low-buffer condition at the receiver.

Abstract: The method for roaming in a network environment utilizes a token created by a first bridge device. The token comprises an identity of a context associated with the mobile device. The first bridge device creates the token and securely provides it to the mobile device. When the mobile device roams to a second bridge device in the network, the token is securely provided to the second bridge device. The second bridge device uses the token to establish to the first bridge device that it is a genuine agent of the mobile device. Once the first bridge authenticates the second bridge device's authority, it securely sends the context associated with the mobile device to the second bridge device. The second bridge device uses the context to properly connect the mobile device to the network. In this manner, secure roaming within a bridged network is provided.

Abstract: A power control bit inserting method between a base station and a terminal. The base station and the terminal each use a plurality of adjacent frequency bands as signal paths with independent signal paths of a real part and an imaginary part given to each frequency. In the power control bit inserting method, a unit time is set to a power control group period, n-bit data is allocated to each signal path, the power control group period is divided by the number of signal paths, and a power control bit is inserted in each divided segment, so that the insertion positions in the real and imaginary parts of each frequency are spaced from each other by n/2 bit and the start position of the real signal path of each frequency is inserted at an appointed bit position of the corresponding frequency.

Abstract: The present invention comprises a system and method for pseudo-tunneling voice communications over a telecommunications network to preserve the quality of the voice call and reduce degradation due to tandemming loss. The pseudo-tunneling of the present invention comprises processing and routing voice packets as data packets. A voice packet is pseudo-tunneled by setting a pseudo-tunneling flag in the voice packet. The pseudo-tunneling flag provides an indication to network devices that the voice packet should be processed and routed like a data packets. Alternatively, one or more voice packets can be encapsulated in a routing packet for routing across a packet switched data network. The routing packet is pseudo-tunneled by setting a pseudo-tunneling flag in the header of the routing packet. Pseudo-tunneled vocoder frames are not converted into PCM or any other decompressed waveform representation of the voice signal, thereby avoiding tandemming loss and preserving bandwidth.

Abstract: Call control methods are disclosed for a multi-zone, packet-based communication system using certain host devices, termed reservation proxy elements, or RPEs to establish reservations of bandwidth for calls on behalf of other participating hosts. RPEs (132-138) receive and join a multicast group address to be used for a call, and exchange RSVP signaling messages across one or more inter-zone, packet network links (148, 150, 152, 154) to reserve communication resources for the call on behalf of participating devices in various zones. The RPEs receive the multicast group address from zone controller(s) (124-130) having received a call request for a talkgroup call. The zone controllers identify the multicast group address for the call and determine locations of participating devices and RPEs for the call.

  • Patent number: 6452490
Abstract: A method and apparatus for communicating between Customer Premises Equipment, (CPE) alarm sensing devices, and alarm monitoring stations. The sensing devices communicate with an end office switch by transmitting a message, such as a string of Dual-Tone Multi-Frequency, (DTMF) digits to that switch. At the switch, the message is processed and a determination is made which of a plurality of alarm monitoring stations should receive the alarm indication. One or more data packets are sent to the selected alarm monitoring stations with the packets identifying the source of the alarm indication, and the type of alarm indication. Advantageously, the packetized communication between the end office switch and the alarm monitoring system allows a high volume of alarm indications to be sent to an alarm monitoring station, because individual telephone connections are not required for each such alarm message.

Abstract: The invention relates generally to a method and an arrangement for transferring information in a packet radio service. Especially the invention applies to transferring delay sensitive data, such as speech and video data, in a mobile cellular telecommunications system. It is an object of this invention to provide a solution, in which the physical connection of a packet radio service is kept reserved also during the passive periods of a session but the same physical resource can still be shared between multiple users. In the present solution after the end of an active period of data transmission a predetermined time period is waited until the connection is released. The length of the time period is informed to the mobile station by the network on a dedicated or on a broadcast channel. The length of the time period is preferably made dependent on the required quality of service value of the connection and on the momentary communication activity in the network or cell.

  • Patent number: 6359896
Abstract: The invention provides techniques for selecting, on a dynamic basis, an interworking function (IWF) that can modify a communication protocol to a particular format required by bridged terminal equipment in a communication system. The IWF can be selected to ensure compatibility between transmission bandwidth, coding and other format parameters of a call and the corresponding parameters of its destination terminal in the system. An IWF in accordance with the invention may be utilized to allow a user to bind to different terminals having different capabilities over the duration of a given call. An IWF in accordance with the invention may also be used to insert additional data, retrieved from a database of the switch, into a reverse portion of the call directed from the destination terminal to the source terminal. The invention can thus be used to ensure that the established bandwidth between the destination terminal and the source terminal is substantially bidirectionally symmetric.
