  • Patent number: 9474011
Abstract: An approach is provided for enabling a subscriber to establish rules for controlling user interaction with a resource based on the activity of the user. A reactive control platform monitors a current activity of a user of a device, one or more services, or a combination thereof associated with a subscriber during access by the user to a network of a subscriber. The status of the user is determined based on the monitoring, profile information associated with the user, or a combination thereof. A request for input from the subscriber for specifying one or more rules to be enforced for affecting a use of the device, the one or more services, the network of the subscriber, or a combination thereof by the user is then generated based on the determination.

  • Patent number: 8693529
Abstract: Execution of a block test “retry” in a test environment with each block in the test sequence sent after the tester has determined that the previous block of data packets has met one or more prescribed test criterion. If a block sent by the DUT has not met the test criterion, a retry sequence is initiated to re-test the block. In another embodiment, a block test “retry” is executed where each block in the test sequence is sent and analysis of previously sent blocks is done in parallel with the sending of a subsequent block. If a previous block has not met the test criterion, a retry sequence is initiated whereby the tester and DUT step back to the block that failed to meet the test criterion and retry that block. If the retry meets test criterion, testing continues by resuming with the next untested block in the sequence.

  • Patent number: 8515018
Abstract: A loop around system and method for use in a telephone line monitors line conditions to detect the initiation of loop testing and automatically bypasses an electronic device, such as a DSL line conditioner, used in the line to prevent the electronic device from being inadvertently detected by the testing system as a line fault. The system additionally shuts down power to itself from the line so that it does not interfere with testing, while continuing to monitor the line during testing to detect conditions that characterize the termination of testing, and then automatically switches the electronic device back into the line upon the conclusion of testing. The system and method may be employed unattended at intermediate locations in the line remote from the CO or the CPE.

  • Patent number: 8054947
Abstract: In a PBX environment, a middleware module abstracts communication cards so that the plurality of channels associated therewith are grouped for efficiency. The middleware module recognizes unoperational channels, and restarts the hardware associated with the channels as well as allowing conferencing and transferring calls when the PBX switch does not support same. Preferably, for outgoing calls, the middleware adapter controls the state of interfaces for all hardware adapters and tries to deliver calls over active interfaces. In case of failure, the middleware adapter investigates and makes a decision if the call should be delivered over another adapter. In this way, redundant and highly available solutions are implemented transparent to application and interface drivers. For incoming calls, the middleware adapter accepts calls from all hardware adapters and presents these calls to applications as if these calls are issued by one adapter.

  • Patent number: 6427011
Abstract: Computers commonly connect to remote computers and networks using the telephone lines. A telephone line is composed of a positive line (Ring) and a negative line (Tip). Because there is no guarantee, in general, which line on a two-conductor telephone jack will be positive and which will be negative, diode bridges are often used to assure correct polarity of devices coupled to the telephone lines. Commonly computers connect to telephone lines using modems, which plug into the computer. The modems often contain two jacks, one to connect the modem to the telephone line, the other to provide an outlet for a telephone. Commonly both jacks are wired in parallel. Embodiments of the inventions provide for wiring the telephone jacks in opposite polarity, or switching polarity via jumpers. A method is provided to detect a telephone plug in the jack of incorrect polarity. A user may be instructed in advance or prompted to switch jacks or jumpers if necessary and the need for the diode bridge is eliminated.

  • Patent number: 6417672
Abstract: A method for detecting the presence of a bridge tap and other types of fault in a transmission line. Initially, test signals of predetermined frequencies are transmitted into a transmitting end of the transmission line. The test signals are received at a receiving end of the transmission line and the amplitudes of the received signal are measured. A frequency response of the transmission line is computed based on the measured amplitudes. The frequency response is then analyzed for the presence of a frequency-domain signature that corresponds to one of the detectable types of fault. The presence of a bridge tap or another type of fault is identified based on the detected frequency-domain signature. The frequency-domain signature associated with a bridge tap can comprise a set of one or more attenuation dips in the frequency response, with each attenuation dip corresponding to a local minima in the frequency response.

  • Publication number: 20010043675
Abstract: A method and apparatus for qualifying a telephone transmission line for XDSL communication services is disclosed. The system includes a modem, located at the customer premises to be connected. The modem analyzes actual signals to determine the electrical characteristics of the communication channel associated with the customer premises. The modem includes a transmitter, receiver and controller to generate test signals and receive responses. The modem then analyzes the data to generate an output value indicative of the electrical characteristics of the communication channel being tested. This output value is then displayed to a user or transmitted over the communication channel to a network. The system thereby eliminates the necessity of dispatching a technician to test the telephone line, and provides more accurate test results than those achievable at the network-side of the connection alone.
