Abstract: In one example, a server classifies a subnetwork of network devices as performing sub-optimally. The server also classifies a geographic cluster of network devices as performing sub-optimally. The server determines whether a particular sub-optimally performing network device is in both the subnetwork and the geographic cluster. If it is determined that the particular sub-optimally performing network device is in both the subnetwork and the geographic cluster, the server identifies the particular sub-optimally performing network device as performing sub-optimally due to a performance issue with a Wide Area Network to which the particular sub-optimally performing network device belongs.

Abstract: The present invention presents a method of identifying faults in a DSL line using upstream and downstream attenuation measurements, which can be obtained directly from the DSLAM or CPE, thus requiring no specialist test equipment nor disrupting service. A downstream over upstream attenuation ratio is calculated for a line, with calculations repeated over a population of lines. The distribution of ratios, as well as upper and lower thresholds, is determined based on the population. A line is identified as being potentially faulty if it has an attenuation ratio above the upper threshold or below the lower threshold. Specifically, an attenuation ratio below the lower threshold is identified as having a high resistance joint fault (caused by an imperfect connection or corrosion at a joint in at least one of the pairs of a line), and a ratio above the upper threshold as a shunt (caused by degradation of the insulation between the pairs of a line, and often coupled with water ingress).

Abstract: A risk assessment and managed security system for network users provides security services for dealing with formidable cyber threats, malware creations and phishing techniques. Automated solutions in combination with human-driven solutions establish an always-alert positioning for incident anticipation, mitigation, discovery and response. A proactive, intelligence-driven and customized approach is taken to protect network users. Assessments of threats are made before and after a breach. Cyber threats are identified in advance of a resulting network problem, and automated analysis locates the threats and stops them from having an adverse effect. Humans can focus on the high-level view, instead of looking at every single potential problem area. Troubling patterns may be reviewed within the network environment to identify issues.

Abstract: A telecommunication system is described that allocates backup power to telephones based on telephone usage. When power to the telecommunication system from a primary source, such as from an electrical utility company, is lost, a backup power source is used to keep the telecommunication system functioning. Because the backup power source has a limited amount of energy, only telephones with a high priority are fully powered. Other telephones are provided with reduced power or receive no power. As the energy level of the backup power source is reduced, the telephone priorities are adjusted.

  • Patent number: 9100478
Abstract: An IVR dialer creation method and system is described that creates new IVR dialers from recorded conversations between users and target IVR systems. An IVR dialer creation server and/or an IVR dialer application records each channel communications between a user and a target IVR system. The IVR system times target IVR system messages, and converts the times into pauses for the IVR dialer. The IVR system speech recognition determines the content of target IVR system messages. The IVR system analyzes user DTMF tones or voice responses to queries from the target IVR server. The IVR system determines which of the user responses are generic for the functional task performed and which pertain to user-specific information. The IVR system then builds the new IVR dialer from the pauses and user responses leaving open the possibility for the input of user-specific information during a later communication with the target IVR system.

  • Patent number: 8964944
Abstract: The invention generally relates to systems, devices, and methods for testing communication lines. In certain aspects, the invention provides systems and devices that include a digital/analog converter configured to operate with a computer processor and memory to send or receive an analog signal over a communication line that includes a plurality of signals having known frequencies. Inbound receiving sub-systems or devices sample the analog signal and measure a quality of the sampled, digital signal to evaluate the communication line. The key differentiator is the recognition that the human mouth and ear are intrinsically analog without encryption. By locating the test device as close to the user as possible, this system incorporates testing of complex communication streams including numerous variables and transforms (e.g. encryption, Analog to digital, Voice over IP, packet switching, ATM, SONET). Ultimately, it provides a simple interface to convert qualitative analysis to quantitative (numerical) analysis.

Abstract: A method and system for determining a number of load coils in a transmission line are provided. An impulse response of the transmission line is calculated from a characteristic impedance of the transmission line. A number of complex conjugate pole pairs of a transfer function of the impulse response is then determined. Thereby, the number of load coils in the transmission line, which is equal to the number of complex conjugate pole pairs, is determined.

  • Patent number: 8880034
Abstract: A mobile communication device provides a user with the ability to set up one or more profiles on the device. Each profile is configured to segment the user's data and applications and selectively restrict access from an active profile to user data and applications associated with other profiles on the device. The mobile communication device stores profile configuration data including profile selection criteria used to automatically associate items of user data with profiles on the device. When an item of user data is received on the device, the device automatically identifies a profile to associate with the received item based on the profile selection criteria, and the received item is stored in the device so as to be associated with the identified profile. Exemplary profile selection criteria include criteria based on a current time or location, a currently active profile, a data type of the received item, and a source of the received item.

  • Patent number: 8873421
Abstract: Systems, methods, and apparatus for generating data packets and testing a packet switching system are provided. For example, a data packet diagnostic system includes an input queuing subsystem comprising a set of data queues, an injecting unit, and a diagnostic unit. Each data queue is coupled with a separate functional read/write path and debug read/write path. The injecting unit injects test data packets into at least one of the data queues via its respective debug read/write path. The test packets can then be processed (e.g., routed) through a data packet processing environment. In some implementations, packets are communicated via the data packet processing environment back to the input queuing subsystem, where the diagnostic unit can read present contents of at least one of the data queues to determine whether the present contents satisfy a predetermined test profile according to the injected data packets.

  • Patent number: 8804913
Abstract: A system for monitoring quality of calls in a network. A server receives information concerning calls which begin or end in a network and at the same time receives measurements of a quality parameter such as bandwidth. This measurement data is provided by a probe, so that the server is able to correlate calls which are placed through the network with the quality of service in the network at that time. When the quality falls below a desired level, the server notifies the customer or the network operator so that appropriate action may be taken.
