Patent number: 8111813Abstract: A technique is disclosed that enables a telecommunications user to initially enter a greeting message in a single media format such as either voice or text. Subsequently, this greeting message is used by a server in response to any communication event that arrives for the user, such as a voice call or an email message, regardless of the media format of the arriving communication event. When the server receives arrival notifications of various communication events, it generates a customized greeting message in response to that event and in the same media format as the event itself. In other words, the server represents a previously-prepared outgoing voice or text message i) as a voice message in response to an incoming voice call and ii) as a textual message in response to an email, SMS text message, or instant message.Type: GrantFiled: September 30, 2008Date of Patent: February 7, 2012Assignee: Avaya Inc.Inventors: Gregory D. Patent number: 8068604Abstract: A method for generating a ring tone for a given caller based on a prior conversation with that caller. A portion of a conversation with a given caller is recorded and stored in memory as a ring tone. When a subsequent call is received from the same caller, identified by caller ID, the ring tone is played, alerting the user to the incoming call as well as the context of their prior communication. In alternative embodiments of the invention, a prior textual or video conversation is used as the basis for a ring tone, and/or the ‘ring tone’ is delivered by other than audio means. The invention is capable of implementation in telecommunications systems such as cellular, local exchange, and VOIP, and in combination with other forms of internet-based telecommunication.Type: GrantFiled: December 19, 2008Date of Patent: November 29, 2011Assignee: Computer Product Introductions CorporationInventors: Richard Leeds, Elon Gasper

Patent number: 8050389Abstract: A system for automatically selecting an outgoing message for an incoming call. In response to receiving an incoming call, a calling party is identified. The identified calling party is compared against call log data to determine that the identified calling party has previously heard a first outgoing message. In response to determining that the identified calling party has not previously heard the first outgoing message, the first outgoing message is played as a selected outgoing message for the incoming call. In response to determining that the identified calling party has previously heard the first outgoing message, a second outgoing message is played as the selected outgoing message for the incoming call. Then, the call log data is updated to identify the selected outgoing message played for the incoming call.Type: GrantFiled: February 15, 2007Date of Patent: November 1, 2011Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Yasmary Hernandez, Nathan Shlomo Marz, Michael A. Patent number: 8050387Abstract: A telephone answering system (100) and method (200) that permits a user to immediately generate a customized playback message in response to an incoming call without having to actually answer the call. The system (100) can include a ring detector (104), a command interface (114), a controller (110) and a telephone network interface (102). In response to an incoming call, the ring detector (104) alerts the called party and causes the controller (110) to activate the command interface (114). The command interface (114) is activated for a predetermined time while the call is still ringing. While activated, the called party can select or enter a playback message. The playback message can be a pre-recorded audio message stored within the device, or a voice message spoken by the called party during the activation period. After the playback message is selected by the called party, the telephone system (100) answers the incoming call and automatically plays the customized message to the calling party.Type: GrantFiled: October 19, 1998Date of Patent: November 1, 2011Assignee: Siemens AktiengesellschaftInventors: Keith Lynn Putnam, William J. Patent number: 7929669Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for reporting to subscribers, wireless network events in a plurality of formats and languages depending upon the particular subscriber group to which a wireless subscriber belongs. When a subscriber requests a call, a switching node in the network invokes a trigger that identifies a location register for routing the call and sends a route request to the location register While processing the route request, if the location register detects an event that would prevent the call from being routed, the location register identifies the subscriber group of the wireless subscriber and determines a directory number associated with the identified subscriber group and the detected event. The location register then returns the determined directory number to the switching node Using the determined directory number, the switching node establishes the call to a message node, where a message associated with the determined directory number is executed.Type: GrantFiled: May 18, 2009Date of Patent: April 19, 2011Assignee: GTE Wireless IncorporatedInventor: Walter Wesley Howe

Patent number: 7616742Abstract: The present invention is a method and system for reducing bandwidth usage in a voice over internet protocol (VoIP) network that uses holding sounds such as music or announcements. When a customer call enters the network through a gateway, the call is received by a media server (VMS) and a workflow is started. When the workflow determines that the customer call is to be put on hold, the VMS sends an instruction signal to the gateway, instructing the gateway to provide an on-hold music or announcement to the customer call. When the workflow determines that the customer call is to be taken off hold, the VMS sends a second instruction signal to the gateway and the gateway stops the music or announcements and proceeds to further process the call under the direction of the workflow.Type: GrantFiled: May 6, 2004Date of Patent: November 10, 2009Assignee: Intervoice, Inc.Inventors: Carl Schoeneberger, Michael P. Patent number: 7539289Abstract: A method and system are provided for allowing a subscriber of voicemail services to selectively deactivate a voicemail system and to designate a reviewed voicemail message as “unheard.” A subscriber to voicemail services provided by a telecommunications network-based system contacts the voicemail system and deactivates voicemail services temporarily or indefinitely. Subsequent callers forwarded to the subscriber's voicemail box at the voicemail system receive an announcement that the called party is not presently accepting voicemail messages. Alternatively, no announcement is provided to the calling party, and the calling party simply receives a busy signal or an unanswered call indication. Once the subscriber is ready to begin receiving messages in her voicemail box, the subscriber may reactivate the voicemail system.Type: GrantFiled: August 18, 2005Date of Patent: May 26, 2009Assignee: AT&T Intellectual Porperty I, L.P.Inventors: La Veria Baker, David Scott

Patent number: 7509255Abstract: An apparatus for processing a speech signal includes a receiver, a speech signal decoder, a speech rate conversion information detector, and a speech rate converting processor. The receiver receives multiplexed signal of information concerning controls and programs, including speech packets through a transmission line. The decoder decodes the speech signal of packets out of the received signals. The detector detects speech rate conversion execution information in the received signals. The processor subjects the decoded speech signal to a speech rate conversion process if the speech rate conversion execution information indicates that the speech signal has not been subjected to the speech rate conversion process on the transmitting end, and which does not subject the decoded speech signal to the speech rate conversion process if the speech rate conversion execution information indicates that the speech signal has been subjected to the speech rate conversion process on the transmitting end.Type: GrantFiled: September 28, 2004Date of Patent: March 24, 2009Assignee: Victor Company of Japan, LimitedInventors: Hiroyuki Takeishi, Yutaka Ichinoi
