Reading Bank Checks (e.g., Documents Bearing E-13b Type Characters) Patents (Class 382/137)
  • Patent number: 10229334
Abstract: A magnetic ink character reader includes a transport unit configured to move a medium along a transport path, a reader configured to magnetically read magnetic ink characters printed on the medium, while the medium is moved along the transport path and to output a signal waveform corresponding to the magnetic ink characters, and a processor configured to compare a transportation direction of the medium through the reader to a forward reading direction of the reader, and to invert, in horizontal and vertical directions, the signal waveform output from the reader when the transportation direction is not the forward reading direction. The processor performs magnetic character recognition using the signal waveform from the reader when the transportation direction is the forward reading direction and the inverted signal waveform when the transportation direction is a reverse reading direction opposite the forward reading direction.

  • Patent number: 10192108
Abstract: Systems and methods are provided for assessing whether mobile deposit processing engines meet specified standards for mobile deposit of financial documents. A mobile deposit processing engine (MDE) is evaluated to determine if it can perform technical capabilities for improving the quality of and extracting content from an image of a financial document. A verification process then begins, where the MDE performs the image quality enhancements and text extraction steps on sets of images from a test deck. The results of the processing of the test deck are then evaluated by comparing confidence levels with thresholds to determine if each set of images should be accepted or rejected. Further analysis determines whether any of the sets of images were falsely accepted or rejected in error. An overall error rate is then compared with minimum accuracy criteria, and if the criteria are met, the MDE meets the standard for mobile deposit.

  • Patent number: 9536139
Abstract: Methods are provided for defining and determining a formal and verifiable mobile document image quality and usability (MDIQU) standard, or Standard for short. The Standard ensures that a mobile image can be used in an appropriate mobile document processing application, for example an application for mobile check deposit. In order to quantify the usability, the Standard establishes 5 quality and usability grades. A mobile image is first tested to determine if the quality is sufficient to obtain content from the image by performing multiple different image quality assessment tests. If the image quality is sufficient, one or more document usability computations are made to determine if the document or content in the image is usable by a particular application. A ranking is then assigned to the image based on the results of the tests which is indicative of the quality and usability of the image.

Abstract: A server system with one or more processors and memory obtains, from a client device, a card image which includes an image of a card, and identifies a card configuration type corresponding to the card in the card image based on a database of stored card configuration types. Each stored card configuration type in the database is associated with layout information regarding respective features and information regions for the stored card configuration type. In accordance with the identified card configuration type, the server system determines one or more information regions of the card image containing respective card information of the card. The server system extracts at least a portion of the card information of the card from the one or more information regions of the card image and transmits, to the client device, at least the extracted portion of the card information.

  • Patent number: 9025851
Abstract: Embodiments of the invention include systems, methods, and computer-program products for providing recreated image documents using image lift data. In this way, an entity may store limited amounts of image data from an original document and subsequently recreate the document image using image lift data. As such, the invention may receive an image document for storage. Upon receiving a document from a transaction for storage, the system may store metadata associated with that document, instead of storing the entire document as a high resolution image file. Furthermore, the system may determine specific unique elements of the document (such as signatures or the like) to capture as an image file. This allows the unique element to be lifted as image data. Using the lifted image data, in combination with the metadata, the system may recreate the image as a system generated image for user recall and reconciliation.

Abstract: A method of categorizing defects in a media item is described. The method comprises the steps of: receiving an ultrasonic image of the media item, where the ultrasonic image comprises a plurality of points, each point having a thickness value corresponding to a normal value, a thin value, or a thick value; identifying one or more blobs comprising contiguous points each having a thickness value corresponding to a thin value; for each identified blob, comparing a size of the blob with a damage criterion; ignoring the blob if the blob size does not meet the damage criterion; and for each identified blob having a size meeting the damage criterion, categorizing the identified blob using the thickness values and locations.

Abstract: Embodiments of the invention include systems, methods, and computer-program products for lifting metadata from financial documents to allow for automated exception processing. As such, allowing for automated decisions for exception processing to systematically be resolved base on matches between lifted metadata. The exceptions may include one or more irregularities such as bad micro line reads, outdated check stork, or misrepresentative checks that may result in a failure to match the check to an associated account for processing. As such, once an exception is identified during the processing the metadata lifted from the document with the exception may be utilized to search financial records at the financial institution to attempt to identify the correct version of the document. Subsequently, the system may correct the irregularity systematically and automatically.

  • Patent number: 9019567
Abstract: A printer with integral scanner obtains a digital signature from an article as it is printed. The integral scanner has a coherent source which directs a light beam to illuminate the article and a detector arrangement to collect data points from light scattered from many different parts of the article to collect a large number of independent data points. The digital signature derived from the data points is stored in a database with an image of what was printed on the article. The authenticity of an article purported to be the originally printed article can be verified by scanning the purported genuine article to obtain its digital signature. The database is then searched, to establish whether there is a match. If a match is found, the image is displayed with the matched digital signature to allow a further visual check that the article is genuine.

  • Patent number: 8995012
Abstract: An automated document processing system, particularly for mobile image capture and processing of financial documents to enhance images captured on a mobile device with camera capabilities for data extraction. The systems comprise a mobile device that includes a capture device configured to capture color images of documents, and that has a processor for performing certain operations, such as color reduction, and a transmitter for sending an image from the mobile device to a server. The server is configured to optimize and enhance the image, and to apply an improved binarization algorithm using a window within a relevant document field and/or a threshold for the document field. Orientation correction may also be performed at the server by reading the MICR line on a check and comparing a MICR confidence to a threshold. A check image may also be size corrected using features of the MICR line and expected document dimensions.

  • Patent number: 8983170
