  • Patent number: 8448828
Abstract: A flexible shipping bag, which after use for shipping an item in commerce, can be turned inside out and transformed into a re-usable backpack with an open top. The flexible shipping bag includes sealing flaps configured to enable opening the flexible shipping bag by cutting off a portion of the sealing-flap. The sealing-flaps fold into the flexible shipping bag when the flexible shipping bag is turned inside out revealing backpack flaps each configured to define a draw-string tube-like passage therethrough. The flexible shipping bag includes a drawstring and a tab extending from an inside edge of the shipping bag, preferably near the bottom, and configured to secure the drawstring. The inside of the shipping bag may also include a separate pouch. The top of the pouch may include means to close the pouch.

Abstract: A lightweight, flexible, portable bag which can be filled with beach sand, rocks, dirt or other loose material is connected to the upper part of the pole of a beach umbrella by a long flexible cord. The lower portion of the cord is secured to the open end of the nylon bag. The upper end of the cord is connected to the upper end of the pole of the umbrella by a hook-and-loop type fastener strap which wraps around the umbrella pole. The lower end of the cord is fitted within a hem in the opening of the bag to form a drawstring for closure of the bag to retain the sand or loose material in the bag during use. One end of the cord is formed into a loop with the long end of the cord passing through the loop and connected to the umbrella pole. Tension on the cord during use will cinch the drawstring closed thus retaining the material within the bag. The weight of the bag connected to the upper part of the pole will stabilize the umbrella in light to moderate winds.

Abstract: A thermoplastic bag suitable for use as a liner for a garbage canister or trash receptacle may be made from a multi-layered thermoplastic web material. The multi-layer web material may include a first layer and a second layer adjacent to the first layer. Under typical conditions, the layers may tend to block or adhere together to remain in their adjacent position. However, the layers may delaminate and separate from each other when sufficient forces are applied. Delamination of the layers allows the layers to move with respect to each other when the force is applied. The delaminating of the layers absorbs energy which may increase tear and puncture resistance.

Abstract: The bag may include first and second sidewalls joined along a first side edge, a second side edge and a bottom edge. The sidewalls may be un-joined along their top edges to form an opening. When the bag is placed in a trash receptacle, the top edges may be folded over the rim of the receptacle. To assist with securing the bag to the receptacle, the bag may include an elongated elastic strap of elastic material attached by a first end to an attachment point proximate the first sidewall and by a second end to an attachment point proximate the second sidewall. The strap length and attachment point locations are selected so that, when the strap is in a relaxed state, the strap may not extend to the side edge. The strap may be stretched commensurate with the side edge when folding the top edges about the receptacle rim.

The first polyethylene component is a linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) having a density of 0.915 g/cc or less, with a preferred range of between 0.900 g/cc and 0.915 g/cc. In certain preferred embodiments, the density of the first polyethylene component is approximately 0.906 g/cc. The second polyethylene component is a low-density polyethylene (LDPE) having a density of between 0.915 g/cc and 0.929 g/cc. In a preferred embodiment, the second polyethylene component has a density of approximately 0.918 g/cc.

The implement has a planar surface in which a plurality of filler apertures are formed in a plurality of rows evenly spaced over its surface area. Each filler aperture has a tensioner ring around the aperture for holding a drawstring held in a sleeve around an open end of the sandbag. A trigger mechanism is movable to a locked position in which the drawstring of the sandbag is pulled tight so that the open end of the sandbag is held in place on the tensioner ring, to an unlocked position in which the trigger mechanism lifts the drawstring off the tensioner ring to allow the sandbag filled with filler material to pull on and cinch the open end of the sandbag closed, and to a release position in which the cinched sandbag is released to the ground.

Abstract: The disclosed subject matter relates to a multilayer stretchy drawstring and methods of making the same. The drawstring of the disclosed subject matter is a stretched multilayer coextruded or laminated film that offers good balance between easy stretching at low strain and high strain hardening at high strain. The multilayer film includes a first layer of elastomeric polymer and second and third layers of thermoplastic polymer and is stretched beyond the deformation limit of the thermoplastic polymer and allowed to recover. This novel drawstring can be incorporated into a bag to enable the bag to be securely fitted to the upper portion of a trash container while not interfering with the intrinsic strength and operation of the drawstring.

Abstract: An elastic drawstring for use in a plastic liner bag is disclosed. The drawstring is elongated and then relaxed to secure the top of the bag to a receptacle and subsequently used to close the bag when filled. The drawstring is formed from an elastomeric polyolefin, preferably a linear low density polyethylene, and contains material comprising polypropylene. The polypropylene addition provides the drawstring with improved modulus or stiffness and improved tensile yield. Improving these properties gives the drawstring a stronger holding force for maintaining the bag in the receptacle and in a closed position when the bag is removed from the receptacle. In addition, the top of the bag has perfed notches at each side that break away to expose the ends of the elastic drawstrings when the consumer stretches the drawstrings around the top of the receptacle. These perfed notches allow for easier manufacturing of the bag.
