The seal comprises a sealing member having a lip which engages a portion of the trunnion at the shoulder thereof and an oppositely extending lip which engages the shoulder of the bearing cup. The sealing member has additional lips extending inwardly and outwardly for engaging the trunnion and the bearing cup. The sealing member has a deep annular groove between the lip which engages the shoulder portion of the trunnion and the outwardly-extending lips, the groove opening outwardly away from the bearing cup. The latter lips can have discontinuities in the form of slits or notches extending generally radially from outer extremities toward base portions thereof.

Abstract: The present invention includes a rear seal assembly that holds and seals a rotatable shaft extending through the cooling chamber and extending axially outboard through a rear wall in the cooling chamber. In the interior of the cooling chamber, the seal assembly includes a first resilient seal having a coupling section fitted about the shaft and a radially protruding lip section at the base of the coupling section. At the axially outboard end portion of the seal housing, an axially outboard male threaded extension protrudes from a wall abutment surface of the seal housing. The outboardly extending male threaded extension of the seal housing mates with complementary threads in the hole through the rear wall of the cooling chamber. A retaining ring, that is metal in the preferred embodiment, is threaded from the outside of the chamber onto the outwardly extending male threaded extension of the seal housing. The retaining ring has a threaded outer circumference.

Abstract: A dynamoelectric machine or electric motor construction is disclosed in which the motor has a cylindrical shell having a stator core press-fitted therein and positioned axially with respect to the shell at a predetermined position. The stator core has a central bore which rotatably receives a rotor assembly, the latter having a rotor shaft extending outwardly from each end thereof. An end shield is press-fitted into each end of the cylindrical shell to a predetermined axial position thereby to support bearings journaling the rotor shaft, with the rotor shaft extending axially outwardly through one of the end shields for connection to its application. This one end shield has a seal which is maintained in perpendicular relation to the rotor shaft and which slidingly seals the interior of the motor relative to the end shield and to the rotary application and rotor shaft.

Abstract: A compact seal assembly fits into the end of a bearing and effectively retains grease within the bearing while excluding contaminants, notwithstanding operation of the bearing within a hostile environment. The seal assembly includes a shield having an axial mounting portion which fits over the inner race of the bearing and an outwardly directed flange, as well as a smooth sealing surface on both. The seal has a case which fits into the outer face of the bearing and an elastomeric sealing element which establishes several barriers along the sealing surface of the shield. The first barrier exists at a pumping labyrinth which encircles, but is spaced outwardly from the axial segment of the sealing surface where it is exposed to the interior of the bearing. The labyrinth contains wedge-shaped cavities which pump the grease back toward the interior of the bearing.

Abstract: A bearing bushing is provided with a sealing ring having a conical bore surface on the side remote from the side at which a shaft is inserted. The rim of the bearing bushing is provided with a concial surface which cooperates with the conical surface of the sealing ring during insertion of the shaft so as to restrain the sealing ring in a manner that prevents it from being forced out of the bearing bushing. Alternatively, a restraining ring having a circumferential projection with a conical surface can be arranged to prevent unseating of the sealing ring when the shaft is inserted from the sealing ring side of the bearing bushing. A shaft being inserted exerts axial force on the sealing ring, causing the inner portion of the sealing ring to expand radially as the conical surface of the sealing ring slidingly ascends the conical surface of the bushing rim or restraining ring, thereby allowing easy insertion of the shaft.
