Patent number: 6536953Abstract: A bearing mounting system and method that reduces vibration using a singular annular elastomeric member contained in a substantially enclosed area that includes open area free of elastomeric material. A bearing raceway surface and an adjacent support surface are spaced apart by a predetermined radial gap. The enclosed cross-sectional area is bounded by features on the bearing raceway surface and the supporting surface that could be either the rotating roll or a support shaft. The enclosed area has a depth and a width and includes the radial gap. The viscoelastic deformation of the elastomeric member contained in this enclosed area in conjunction with the amount of open area in the enclosed area, provides a dual stiffness system that reduces or eliminates the excessive vibration that occurs in chucks for textile fiber windups or similar systems, when there is relative movement to reduce the radial gap and the enclosed area containing the radial gap.Type: GrantFiled: November 8, 2000Date of Patent: March 25, 2003Assignee: E. Publication number: 20030048964Abstract: The present invention discloses a bearing damping system for damping vibrations and conducting heat from vibration-producing, heat-generating devices, an evacuated energy storage system including such a bearing damping system for damping vibrations produced by the rotating shaft and conducting heat from bearings and/or bearing assemblies; and a method for damping vibrations and conducting heat from vibration-producing, heat-generating devices. In one aspect of the present invention, the system includes one or more flexible bearing dampers in combination with one or more heat transferring rosettes. The flexible, e.g., elastomeric, bearing dampers minimize the rigid body critical velocity, which further minimizes the amplitude of the vibrations so that relatively high damping energy is required. The heat transferring rosettes comprises a flexible thermally conductive member that transfers heat by conduction from the bearings, bearing assemblies and/or heat generating devices to a remote heat sink.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 13, 2001Publication date: March 13, 2003Inventors: Norman C. Patent number: 6520678Abstract: One or more piezo-based devices are mounted on a center bearing assembly of a drive train assembly for reducing the amount of vibrations that are generated therein during operation. The piezo-based device is used to dampen these vibrations by converting the physical vibratory motion of the driveshaft tube into an electrical current that is dissipated through a resistive element as heat. By varying the magnitude of the resistive element, the center damping frequency of the piezo-based device can be varied as needed for center bearing assembly and drive train. If desired, an inductive element may be provided with the resistive element to dissipate the electrical current. The magnitude of the resistive element may be varied by a controller in response to the magnitude and/or frequency of the vibrations sensed by a sensor.Type: GrantFiled: March 27, 2001Date of Patent: February 18, 2003Assignee: Spicer Driveshaft, Inc.Inventors: Albert Aiken, James A. Patent number: 6517251Abstract: An overmolded motor bearing is provided for use with an electric motor. A conventional ball-bearing has a rubberized sleeve molded directly onto the bearing so that the bearing and insulating rubber sleeve form a unitary subassembly. The bearing sub-assembly is formed by inserting the conventional ball-bearing directly into the mold of an injection molding machine. Importantly, the rubberized material encapsulating the bearing extends around the outer bearing race and along the side faces of the bearing. In a preferred embodiment, separate nylon washers are installed on either side of the bearing when the bearing is inserted into the mold. The rubberized material is then injection molded around the outer bearing race to capture the nylon washers. The preferred embodiment thus prevents the bearing shields on the side faces of the bearing from being subjected to the injection molding pressures within the mold which can deform and thus damage the bearing shields.Type: GrantFiled: November 9, 2000Date of Patent: February 11, 2003Assignee: Black & Decker Inc.Inventor: Mark D. Patent number: 6480363Abstract: A damped tolerance ring assembly has an outer tolerance ring, an inner tolerance ring, and an elastomeric layer bonded therebetween. The tolerance rings are metal, spring-like split rings. Each tolerance ring has corrugations for additional strength. The elastomeric layer contours to the shape of both the inner and outer rings and their corrugations. The damped tolerance ring assembly is press fit between a cylindrical pivot assembly and a cylindrical hole in the actuator body of a disk drive. The friction at the interfaces of the tolerance rings due to compressive forces hold the pivot securely in the actuator body such that they all rotate together relative to a pivot shaft. The tolerance rings are formed from steel and provide a stiff outer shell for the ring assembly to resist axial rocking of the actuator body relative to the pivot, especially during structural resonance modes. The thin layer of elastomer provides the damping and isolation to absorb vibration energy of the bearing reaction force.Type: GrantFiled: May 22, 2000Date of Patent: November 12, 2002Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventor: Walter L. Patent number: 6264370Abstract: An isolator to prevent transmitted vibrations includes a ring which fits within a shaft opening of a housing. A bearing is received within the isolator and a shaft is received within the bearing. The vibrations are decoupled from a vibration transmission path by the different material of the isolator. The isolator is preferably manufactured of a rigid laminate material dissimilar to the housing material. Another embodiment of the present invention integrates the isolator directly into the bearing assembly. By manufacturing the outer member of the bearing assembly of the laminated material, the outer member similarly breaks the transmission path of vibrations without the need of the additional member. Noise is thereby substantially prevented from reaching, and from being amplified by, the housing. This greatly reduces the resulting noise and vibration.Type: GrantFiled: August 4, 1999Date of Patent: July 24, 2001Assignee: Meritor Heavy Vehicle Systems, LLCInventors: Dennis A. Patent number: 5675456Abstract: A vibration decoupler for a swing-type head actuator pivot bearing assembly in a disk drive. The invention selectively decouples axial actuator vibrations from the pivot shaft while retaining the radial and rotational rigidity needed to ensure head positioning precision. The head stack assembly is rigidly coupled to the pivot bearing shaft in the radial and rotational dimensions and is pliably coupled to the same shaft in the axial dimension. This decoupling scheme eliminates most acoustic vibration components created in the rotary actuator. Axial decoupling eliminates most acoustic vibration components transmitted from the pivot shaft to the drive housing. The vibration isolator may be fabricated as a single piece of injection-molded plastic, including all necessary elements for coupling to the pivot bearing and the actuator body.Type: GrantFiled: November 21, 1995Date of Patent: October 7, 1997Assignee: Western Digital CorporationInventor: David K. Patent number: 5612583Abstract: An electric motor (1) has a stator (3) and a rotor (5) having a rotor shaft (7), which rotor shaft is supported relative to the stator by means of ball-bearings (9). The ball-bearings are connected directly to suspension elements (11 ) for the suspension of the electric motor (1) relative to an external device. Resilient elements (13) are arranged between the suspension elements (11) and the stator (3) to suppress vibrations in the suspension elements (11). When the electric motor (1) is used in an apparatus less vibrations are transmitted to the frame of the apparatus, so that the apparatus itself also produces less vibrations and less noise.Type: GrantFiled: October 28, 1993Date of Patent: March 18, 1997Assignee: U.S. Philips CorporationInventors: Jacobus Crucq, Paulus A.
