  • Patent number: 6736544
Abstract: An improved method and structure for setting pinion bearing preload and fastener clamp load in a vehicle differential is provided. The apparatus and method provide a preload spacer readily accessible outboard of the pinion bearings and input yoke. Pinion bearing preload is set according to the present invention by the force of the pinion gear on the inner cone of an inner bearing and the force of an input yoke on the outer cone of an outer bearing. As a nut is torqued into contact with the input yoke, a preload spacer limits the movement of the nut as the input yoke engages the outer cone. This provides for consistent preload on the bearings and allows for increased clamp load for retaining the nut.

  • Patent number: 5803619
Abstract: A piston is displaced in a cylinder to pre-load an antifriction bearing. This displacement of the piston is effected according to the amount of working oil confined in a working oil chamber. This oil pressure generating device is equipped with a working oil reservoir to pressurize the working oil in the reservoir for reserving the working oil to be fed to the chamber. An orifice is disposed in a working oil passage for providing the communication between the reservoir and the chamber. The clearance, which is established in the portion of antifriction bearing by the extension or contraction of a shaft due to a temperature change, is absorbed by such displacement of the piston, as is effected by the flow of the working oil between the reservoir and the chamber via the orifice. This orifice acts as a high resistance to and a high rigidity against the abrupt fluctuation in the direction opposite to the pre-loading direction.

  • Patent number: 5795037
Abstract: A novel axle nut system is provided on the spindle ends of an axle which mounts a wheel assembly that includes tapered roller bearings. The axle nut system of the present invention includes an adjustment nut, a washer and a retainer member. The adjustment nut is threaded into position having torque applied to it in a controlled manner to achieve specific preload bearing pressure against the outer bearings. Thereafter, the washer is placed into contact with the nut and is rotationally fixed with respect to the axle. Next, the threaded retainer member is rotated into contact with the washer. With the threaded retainer member placed on the axle to prevent any outward movement of either the wheel assembly components or the adjustment nut and washer, the adjustment nut is rotated in the opposite direction by which it was installed until it jams forcibly against the washer and thus, the threaded retainer member.
