Patent number: 7766554Abstract: Crowning is applied to a side surface of an inner ring which abuts against a side surface of a drive shaft in a radial direction. With this construction, when the two side surfaces abut against each other by a pressing operation of a threadedly-engaged nut at the time of connecting the drive shaft and an inner shaft, a contact pressure distribution of abutting surfaces is made generally uniform, thereby suppressing the occurrence of an edge load. By thus preventing a contact pressure from increasing at part of the abutting surfaces, energy released by a stick-slip phenomenon is reduced, and a sound pressure level of an abnormal sound generated at this time is reduced.Type: GrantFiled: September 24, 2007Date of Patent: August 3, 2010Assignee: JTEKT CorporationInventors: Tsuyoshi Kamikawa, Yoshishige Takeda, Naoto Araki, Kazuhisa Kajihara

Patent number: 6959493Abstract: A reliable brake rotor and wheel bearing assembly are proposed which make unnecessary adjustment of runout of brake rotor at the customer's factory. For runout of each of the mounting surface and back of the brake rotor itself, and runout of the side of the wheel mounting flange of the inner member to which is mounted the brake rotor, the maximum difference between the peaks of crests and troughs in each period of surface runout is restricted within a standard value, and the brake rotor is mounted to the wheel mounting flange, thereby eliminating the necessity of mounting of the brake rotor and adjustment of runout after mounting at the customer's factory to provide a reliable automotive wheel bearing assembly.Type: GrantFiled: February 25, 2003Date of Patent: November 1, 2005Assignee: NTN CorporationInventors: Eiji Tajima, Shigeaki Fukushima, Akira Torii, Kazuhiro Azuma, Naoshi Kinpara, Hisashi Ohtsuki, Kazunari Yamamoto, Motoharu Niki, Masuo Takaki

Patent number: 6880247Abstract: A bearing is mounted on a hollow shaft of a hub wheel. A shaft end of the hollow shaft is deformed radially outward and caulked to an outer end face of an inner ring of the bearing. Between a first area in which a spline portion is formed and a second area in which a caulked portion is formed, between a bending starting point for bending the shaft end radially outward and an end face of the shaft end on an inner peripheral face of the hollow shaft, a third area for suppressing deformation of the inner peripheral face of the hollow shaft caused by the caulking is formed. Patent number: 6857835Abstract: A locking washer for axles on vehicles that prevents a nut from rotational movement relative to the axle. The locking washer includes a sleeve step having central passage with a non-cylindrical section that is rotationally coupled to the axle. The non-cylindrical section may include polygonal lobes or splines that engage a matching shaped portion on the axle. The washer is engaged directly on the shaped portion of the axle instead of the threaded portion of the axle and thereby reduces manufacturing costs and steps by eliminating machining of the threaded portion. The washer being engaged on the shaped portion prevents any relative movements between the axle and the washer from disturbances such as vibration, impact, and rotation.Type: GrantFiled: September 11, 2002Date of Patent: February 22, 2005Assignee: Visteon Global Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Hui Wang, Richard L. Patent number: 6857786Abstract: Mounted in a suspension upright for land vehicles, there is provided an arrangement comprising a constant velocity joint, a hub and two wheel bearings with provision for preload adjustment, wherein the CV joint's outer race proper is the inboard wheel bearing's inner race. The bearing raceway formed on the exterior surface of the CV joint's outer race proper is located so as to be in the general area occupied by the driven plane in line with the CV joint's flexural center, providing full end support to the CV joint itself, and concurrently bring about increased axial spacing between the inboard and outboard bearings. Having the CV joint's outer race proper thus integrated to the inboard wheel bearing, a robust hub assembly is provided, wherein the CV joint's flexural center can be placed more closely to the wheel center plane than is normally possible, making negative scrub radius with low kingpin inclination easily achievable.Type: GrantFiled: August 19, 2002Date of Patent: February 22, 2005Inventor: Frank Victor Csik

Patent number: RE40666Abstract: A mounting for the road wheel of an automotive vehicle includes a spindle, a hub located around the spindle and inboard and outboard tapered roller bearings located between the hub and spindle where they are mounted in opposition. The cones (inner races) of the two bearings are separated by a spacer which at its ends is attached to the cones. The spacer holds the cones together within the hub so that the bearings and hub can be installed on and removed from the spindle as a unit. The spacer also establishes the setting for the bearings. In addition, the mounting has a seal located in the inboard end of the hub. The seal has lips which establish dynamic fluid barriers along the cone of the inboard bearing and along an adjacent sealing surface on the spindle without contacting the cone or spindle. The raceways and rollers for the two bearings have highly crowned profiles and the hub and the seal within contain an optimum amount of grease for lubricating the bearings.Type: GrantFiled: September 1, 2006Date of Patent: March 17, 2009Assignee: The Timken CompanyInventors: Mark A.
