Abstract: Described herein is an example apparatus for skipping a portion of content during streaming of the content to a display device, where the portion is of little or no interest to the user. The apparatus includes a memory having a database stored therein. The database stores metadata relating to the content. The metadata includes an index, where the index stores pointers to portions of the content. The apparatus includes a processor that is communicatively coupled to the memory. In operation, the processor streams the content for display on the display device. When the processor determines an end of a teaser portion has been reached in the stream of the content to the display device, it enables a skip command. Responsive to enabling the skip command, the processor receives command input from the user to skip a title sequence/opening credits portion of the content.

Abstract: A recording device, such as a video camera, emits audio watermarks (e.g., audible tones, inaudible tones) and records audio watermarks emitted by other recording devices. The audio watermarks provide information (e.g., data) such as an identifier of the camera and the identity of the operator. Audio watermarks may further include time information such as a timestamp indicating the time that the audio watermark was emitted by the camera. Audio watermarks may be emitted and recorded at intervals while recording an incident. A processing system, such as a digital video and audio processing system, may receive video information and recorded watermarks from multiple recording devices. The processing system may use the audio watermarks recorded by each recording device to determine which recording devices were in the vicinity of an incident. The processing system may also use the audio watermarks to align (e.g., synchronize) the video recorded by the various recording devices.

Abstract: Described herein are systems and methods for selectively determining a set of segments of a live content stream to present at a user device to overcome a delay in the live content stream. A content manifest may be accessed that identifies locations of the segments of the set. Tagging information may be accessed that identifies action segments and other segments of the set. The set of segments can be determined based at least in part on the content manifest and the tagging information. The set of segments may be discontinuous in an unaltered stream, but may be presented continuously in a customized stream.

Abstract: Systems and methods are provided for selectively replacing commercials that are in a video data stream with alternative commercials. Automatic content recognition (ACR) is performed on the video data stream to detect the identity of each of the commercials played in a commercial block during a commercial break. Commercials in the video data stream which are detected as being displayed on a video display device are stored in a first database, and commercials in the video data stream which are detected as not being displayed on the video display device are stored in a second database. A rules engine defines how commercials in the video data stream should be replaced with other commercials. Commercials in the video data stream that were previously detected as being displayed on the video display device are selectively replaced with commercials that were previously detected as not being displayed on the video display device.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a device and a method for transmitting and receiving a signal of a broadcast including a subtitle service. One embodiment of the present invention provides a broadcast signal transmitting method comprising the steps of generating a broadcast signal, which includes video data and subtitle data, and transmitting the generated broadcast signal. Abstract: A closed caption tagging system provides a mechanism for inserting tags into an audio or video television broadcast stream prior to or at the time of transmission. The tags contain command and control information that the receiver translates and acts upon. The receiver receives the broadcast stream and detects and processes the tags within the broadcast stream which is stored on a storage device that resides on the receiver. Program material from the broadcast stream is played back to the viewer from the storage device. Tags indicate the start and end points of a program segment. Program segments such as commercials are automatically replaced by the receiver with new program segments that are selected based on various criteria.

Abstract: Recording television programs for future playback by enabling the user to record a plurality of programs that have sequential units of commercial content. There is sequential sensing for commercial content units. When a commercial content unit is reached, it is removed for separate storage. A determination is made as to whether the removed commercial content unit is the same as a previous commercial content unit that has been removed. Any previous commercial unit that has been removed has been stored in a file and a pointer to the file inserted in place of the commercial in the sequential stream of the television program being recorded. Thus, if the removed commercial unit has the same content, i.e. is a repeat of a previous commercial, the inserted pointer will point to the file of the previous commercial.

Abstract: Systems and methods for advanced recording options in interactive media guidance applications pertaining to whether a program includes commercials, has a particular aspect ratio, is a director's cut, or is unrated. The interactive media guidance application receives a user input to search for and record a program with one or more recording attributes, including an input designating that an attribute be required, preferred, or preferred in multiple copies. In one method, the interactive media guidance application retrieves media guidance information data for the program from memory, determines if the program has the desired recording attribute, and if so, records the program. In another method, the interactive media guidance application records the first available program which has all required recording attributes, and then continues to search for and record more-preferred versions.

Abstract: Simple, computational efficient, and robust audio features are applied in a uniform program indexing method for picking up video segments relating to highlight plays in a recorded program worthy of being reviewed. By focusing on certain frequencies in an audio sequence of the program, a computational complexity of the uniform program indexing method is significantly decreased. With the aid of MFCC coefficients and a DFBE coefficient generated from the MFCC coefficients, audio patterns may be utilized for differentiating exciting events in the program from other unnecessary information. Scores corresponding to various audio segments are regarded as standards for picking up video segments in the program worthy of being chosen in a recorded highlight collection. Abstract: A user playing a media file having ads on a playback device is able to automatically skip the ads during playback depending on the user's subscription level, as indicated in a user license or user account information. Whether an ad is automatically skipped may depend not only on the user license but also on attributes of the ad. An ad may have a skip-level which indicates the “importance” of the ad. If the advertiser wants to ensure that the ad will be seen and not be automatically skipped by a media playback unit, it can pay a higher price for the ad and the ad will be assigned a higher skip-level value. On the user subscription side, a user who wants to avoid ads may pay a higher subscription fee and have a user license that determines, via an auto-skip level value (“user level”), how many ads the user can automatically skip during playback of the media file. With a higher the auto-skip level value, the user is able to automatically skip more ads on the playback device.
