  • Patent number: 5810501
Abstract: A clinch-type fastener permits sheets to be joined at a right angle corner. The fastener includes a rectangular base with clinch-type undercut grooves along the sides. The base is connected to a partial cylindrical channel defining an axial bore for receiving a screw or pin. The axis of the channel is parallel to the undercuts and to a first sheet into which the base is clinched being received by a corresponding aperture in the base sheet. Tapered guides located on each side of the fastener directly above the undercuts facilitate placement of the insert into the sheet prior to clinching. The fastener is preferably formed by extruding metal to form a long length of material having this lateral profile. Individual fasteners can then be produced simply by cutting an elongate extrusion into small segments.

  • Patent number: 5799766
Abstract: The present invention generally relates to the attachment of a centrifugal mass or a modular clutch to the output end of a crankshaft of an internal combustion engine. For this purpose, axially-oriented gear teeth can be introduced in both parts, e.g. a serration, and there can be a central screw element which can extend into a threaded portion in the crankshaft. The present invention teaches that an axially-oriented spring bias can be applied to both parts to create a reliable connection between the parts of the gear teeth.

  • Patent number: 5771975
Abstract: An end of a composite cylinder is formed about a multipiece end assembly having a contour which prevents the withdrawal of the end assembly from the cylinder. The pieces of the end assembly are relatively forced apart and a spacer is positioned between the parts to maintain the pieces in intimate contact with the inner surface of the cylinder thus preloading the end prior to application of an axial load or removing any residual gap from the manufacturing process. The cylinder may have end assemblies at both ends and to which may be coupled external connectors such as flange members, for construction of a marine riser.

  • Patent number: 5765960
Abstract: A connector comprising a body having a body central bore defining a body axis, one end contoured to conform to a surface of a support member, and another end shaped to coaxially abut a free end of a hollow member. An expansion element is carried by the body for close entry into the hollow member when the body and the free end abut. A drive element passes through the body central bore and has one end adapted to engage the support member, and another end engaging the expansion element, to impart a radially outward force component to the expansion element as at least a portion of the drive element is drawn toward the one end of the body. The expansion element can be in the form of resilient fingers cantilevered from the body into the hollow member, and the drive element can be a wedge member drawn by a bolt, toward the one end of the body, for urging the resilient fingers outwardly.

  • Patent number: 5709513
Abstract: An improved mounting structure includes a soft mounting sleeve having a locking hole at a central position for fitting into a through hole of a mount, and a screw fitted with a washer. In assembly, the screw is inserted into the mounting sleeve fitted into the mount before driven into a frame structure. When the screw is driven into the top side of the mount, the bottom side of the mounting sleeve will elevate with the turning of the screw to impose a pressure on the screw threads, thus preventing the screw from being driven further and achieving a good mounting effect. This arrangement also prevents the screw from driving unduly deep into the frame structure due to excessive torsional force to prevent any possible damage to the frame structure or the screw threads.

  • Patent number: 5700103
Abstract: A mounting structure including a locking plate disposed between a mount and a frame structure is described. The locking plate is provided with a central locking hole. A screw is provided with a washer that has a plurality of teeth at the outer periphery of its bottom side. The screw is passed through the washer, the mount and the locking plate into the flame structure. The teeth of the washer clutch the surface of the mount and prevent movement with the turning of the screw. The locking plate will slightly elevate with the turning of the screw, imposing a pressure on the screw to stop it from turning. This ensures firm locking of the mount to the frame structure preventing the screw from driving unduly deep into the frame structure to damage the frame structure or the screw threads.

Abstract: A coupling apparatus interconnects a first circular tube and a second circular tube which are perpendicular to each other so as to form a T-shaped tube unit. The coupling apparatus includes a first resilient securing member, a second resilient securing member and a bolt. Each of the first and second resilient securing members has a convex side surface, a concave side surface, a central hole and a plurality of radial projections. The first resilient securing member includes an internally threaded circular tubular projection projecting axially from a central portion thereof. The second resilient securing member includes a circular tubular projection projecting axially from a central portion of the convex side surface thereof. The first resilient securing member is first press fitted in an end portion of the first circular tube. The second resilient securing member is then press fitted in the end portion of the first circular tube to abut against the concave side surface of the first resilient securing member.

Cross members and auxiliary mounts are secured to the side rails by adapters that have a size and shape corresponding to the apertures in the side rails. The means for securing the adapters to the side rails allows the load to be distributed over a wide area of the side rail to reduce stress concentrations. The combination of the adapters and the plurality of similar sized apertures results in a modular structural frame connection system for vehicles.

Abstract: An adjustable timing gear arrangement having an output shaft and a camshaft operable in timed relationship with the output shaft comprises a first rotatable drive member driven by the output shaft with a second rotatable drive member mounted on the camshaft and operably connected with the first drive member for rotation in timed relation therewith. The second drive member is mounted on the camshaft for rotation on a common axis with the second drive member and the camshaft and is secured thereto to fix the angular relationship of the members. The mounting permits limited relative angular rotation of the members when the members are not so secured. For adjusting the relative angular positions of the second drive member and the camshaft there is an assembly including an unthreaded, cylindrical stud extending from the camshaft into a radially extending slotted opening through the second drive member. The opening includes angularly spaced, parallel sides.
