  • Patent number: 9200730
Abstract: The disclosed manufacture method for a length of tubing can produce a length of fatigue resistant tubing that has relatively high fatigue resistance and relatively low strip-to-strip welding length. The Fatigue resistance is calculated from experimental settings with controlled parameters and/or simulations reproducing similar material properties and loading conditions. A high fatigue resistance means certain product characteristics (e.g., low plasticization, low hydrostatic stress levels and free of imperfections welds) can be retained with an adequate bias weld design at low values after a specific test number of cyclic loading. The relatively low strip-to-strip welding length is an advantage for reducing probabilities of having cracks initiated and/or propagated at weld locations, where imperfections and localized differences of mechanical properties commonly cause failure. Low strip-to-strip welding length can also reduce the costs for welding.

Abstract: One embodiment of a fatigue resistant structural connection that has a primary member 19 coupled to a baseplate 17 with a circumferential weld 18. The connection employs the use of a plurality of stiffeners with elongated, contoured tails 30 coupled to the primary member with a longitudinal weld 27 and coupled to the baseplate with a weld 26. These stiffeners are oriented along the longitudinal axis of the primary member and are laid out radially from this longitudinal axis. The present embodiment: mitigates stress concentrations due to discontinuous connection geometry and therefore improves fatigue resistance, adds a degree of structural redundancy to otherwise non-redundant structures, and provides a means of retrofitting existing tall cantilevered structures. Other embodiments are described and shown.

Abstract: Ni base superalloys containing relatively large amounts of Al and/or Ti are known to be difficult to weld satisfactorily. As the Al and Ti content of the superalloy is increased to improve the strength, the weldability of the component is drastically reduced. It is concluded herein that reducing the ?? phase improves weldability. A stepwise, controlled heating and cooling process is described to be used in cooperation with a welding process to reduce the ?? present and thereby improve weldability.

The method is a method for connecting two or more members together, at least one of which is a fiber reinforced resin member containing a thermoplastic resin and also containing a reinforcing fiber material that serves as a heating element in the thermoplastic resin, at a position of superposition. The method includes pressing the members against each other while heating the members at a position of superposition using one of induction heating or dielectric heating and thus melting the thermoplastic resin with heat generated from the fiber material that serves as the heating element, thereby connecting the members together.
