    Abstract: A cutting head for a strip mining machine is provided that has a unique arrangement of cutting arms for prolonging the life of the cutting head, which provides for efficient collection of disturbed mineral composite loosened by the cutting arms, and which has improved, replaceable cutting teeth. The improved cutting head comprises a rotatable axle member and a plurality of radially and longitudinally spaced cutting arms projecting generally radially outwardly from the axle member. A detachable cutting tooth is received within a receptacle at the outermost end of each cutting arm in a resilient force fit, and is retained within the receptacle by removable spiral pins. Flighting is provided for urging disturbed composite towards the middle of the cutting head, and the cutting arms in the middle of the cutting head are provided with impelling plates for urging the composite radially outwardly from the cutting head.

    Abstract: A joint for demountably clamping a tubular member into a main bore in a socket comprises an auxiliary bore directed perpendicular to the axis of the main bore and intersecting it over a small arc and first and second collets that fit in the auxiliary bore. Part cylindrical bearing faces on the collets are shaped to conform to the curvature of the tubular member. A clamping bolt urges the collets together so that they press on the tubular member and retain it in the socket. Preferably a reinforcing insert fits the end of the tubular member and has a disc or annulus that registers with the collets to resist compressive loads on the tube.

    Abstract: A fitting for connection to a metal plain end pipe includes a generally cylindrical sleeve section sized to receive and cradle a pipe end portion, an annular seal in the sleeve section for forming a fluid-tight connection between the pipe end portion and the fitting and a locking rod extensible into the sleeve section. The locking rod is received into a bore extending substantially tangentially through a wall of the sleeve section and communicating with a sleeve section interior surface over less than a cross-sectional circular periphery of the bore whereupon a segment of the wall of the bore forms an intersection with the interior surface along the length of the bore. The locking rod has a metal cutting tip for tangentially cutting a groove along the intersection in a pipe end portion received in the sleeve section. The locking rod is securely retained in the groove as a key for firmly locking the pipe into the fitting.
