Pavement Patents (Class 404/17)
  • Patent number: 7503202
Abstract: A method of reconstructing a road by selecting a bituminous mixture for repairing a paved surface and re-paving the surface using a hot in-place recycling process. Selection includes adding and mixing various types and amounts of bitumens with a reclaimed sample of the paved surface to form mixtures, compacting the mixtures to form test specimens with air voids within about 1-3% of the air voids of the paved surface or density within 10-20% of the density of the paved surface, and measuring the rheology of the specimens, preferably by a tensile strength procedure. Selecting bitumen content based on the rheology of the tested specimens. Re-paving the surface by milling the surface to a depth of about 1.5-8 inches, mixing the selected bitumen with the milled surface, and paving the surface with the paving mixture thus formed.

Abstract: Porous aggregates are coated with latex or water-based paints so as to lower the absorbility of the aggregates. When the paint-coated aggregates are mixed with an asphalt binder to produce an asphalt composition, the paint-coated aggregates absorb less of the asphalt binder, resulting in costs savings of the asphalt binder. In addition, the paint-coated aggregates avoid problems associated with selective absorption of components of the asphalt binder.

  • Patent number: 7351004
Abstract: A concrete structure for replenishing an aquifer and a method for constructing the same is provided. The structure is comprised of a pavement layer with surface drains that extend through the pavement layer and into an aggregate leach field. The leach field includes leach lines spanning the leach field. An aggregate drain extends from the leach field into a sand lens. Precipitation which falls upon the structure thus flows through the surface drain, absorbed into the aggregate leach field, and transported to the aggregate drains by way of aggregate leach lines. The water is then absorbed into the sand lens, ultimately replenishing the aquifer. Existing conventional pavement structures are retrofitted by the removal of a section of the pavement, and filling the same with porous concrete.

  • Patent number: 7179017
Abstract: A solvent-based solution including methods of making and using for treating and protecting for heavy traffic asphalt pavement, particularly against water-associated problems, such as repeated freeze/thaw cycles, and damage caused by exposure to UV light. The mechanism of protection include an internal coating and partial internal sealing of voids and pores with a special blend of pre-oxidized asphalt emulsion that has been modified with moisture-insensitive silicone-based compounds and surfactants to enhance penetration depth and effectiveness. The sealer works from within the asphalt pavement as well as at the surface. A water-repelling function prevents water from penetrating from the surface while allowing vapor transmission across the pavement through connected voids and capillaries. The sealer should also enhance the bonding strength between asphalt coated particles, thus eliminate chipping.

Abstract: In order to produce a jointless and porous granular covering (1), rubber-elastic granules (3) and a binder (5) are mixed and applied to a base (7) to form a sheetlike surfacing (6). Prior to the curing of the binder (5), the sheetlike surfacing (6) is compacted and smoothed on its upper side (11). Prior to the curing of the binder (5), the compacted surfacing (15) is provided with a texture (20) on its upper side (14) by being subjected to mechanical pressure using an uneven embossing face (19). The granules (3) preferably have a mean particle size in the range from 0.1 to 3 mm, preferably 0.5 to 1.5 mm.

Abstract: A method of reconstructing a road is provided. This method includes taking representative cores of the road, analyzing the cores, selecting a substantially solvent-free emulsion based on climate history, mixing the emulsion and reclaimed asphalt pavement particles to form an asphalt emulsion mix, testing the asphalt emulsion mix for performance using a raveling test, a thermal cracking prediction test by an indirect tensile testing, a moisture susceptibility test utilizing vacuum saturation, and a dry Marshall stability test. It also includes designing a CIR layer based on this test data. It further includes grinding off a layer of the existing asphalt road leaving at least about an inch, adding an emulsion to the reclaimed asphalt pavement particles, applying the designed cold in-place recycling layer to the road, and compacting it.

Abstract: Provided is a prefabricated cement concrete slab for road pavement by which rapid and convenient construction and repair and maintenance can be achieved and which is durable and cost effective. Prefabricated cement concrete slab units each of the size adapted to the width of a roadway can be easily transported to a construction site by means of a lifting equipment installed on each slab unit. Also, a connection equipment is installed for fixedly connecting the respective slab units without being moved with respect to each other or the ground. Watertight members for preventing infiltration of water into the ground are installed between neighboring slab units connected continuously. Therefore, the road pavement using the cement concrete slab units can be easily repaired and maintained in a cost-effective way. Also, the appearance of the road can be improved and an even road surface can be attained.

Abstract: The present invention is directed to an improved thermoplastic pavement marking composition system that comprises a pavement surface that is light in color (white or off-white). A first marking stripe is applied and adheres to the top of the pavement surface. This first marking stripe has a thickness of at least about 40 mils to about 110 mils, and comprises a solidified thermoplastic resin composition. The solidified resin composition comprising a black pigment. A second marking stripe is applied and adheres to the surface of the first marking stripe, the second marking stripe having a thickness of at least 40 mils to about 750 mils or more. It is narrower than said first marking stripe and also comprises a solidified thermoplastic resin composition. The thermoplastic resin composition of the second marking stripe is comprised of a pigment that visibly contrasts with the first marking stripe.
