Patent number: 8711004Abstract: One estimate indicates that rubbernecking and congestion consumes about 4% of this country's fuel. Two approaches are presented to help solve this problem. The first uses shields to block the view of a car accident. Rubbernecking is reduced since the visibility of the car accident is reduced. A second approach uses mobile flat units that can be remotely controlled to enter a roadway that is carrying active traffic. The traffic runs over these units that are being moved until the master processor indicates that the mobile flat units are in position. A post is extended from the flat unit that issues commands to the motorists so the master processor can begin to control and reduce congestion. Both approaches can be used to help decrease fuel waste in the US.Type: GrantFiled: January 3, 2010Date of Patent: April 29, 2014Assignee: TrackThings LLCInventors: Cassandra Marlene Gabara, Thaddeus John Gabara

The cover includes inner and outer layers formed of rubber, preferably using recycled tire material. A medial layer includes additional resilience. In one embodiment, the medial layer includes a plurality of closely spaced hemispherical elements, preferably formed of highly resilient polybutadiene material. In another embodiment, the center layer includes a plurality of closely spaced, pneumatically interconnected inflatable hemispheres. The traffic barrier covers may include planter box receptacles set into their upper surfaces when installed, and/or solar cells set into their upper surfaces to charge a storage battery for powering lighting set into the sides of the cover. Tread patterns may be provided in the outer surfaces of the traffic barrier covers.Type: GrantFiled: October 27, 2011Date of Patent: January 7, 2014Inventor: Ibtesam M. Y. Mustafa

Publication number: 20140003867Abstract: A bollard apparatus for use as a vehicle barrier including a plurality of bollard members (15) a plurality of separate foot members (3, 401) each adapted for ground engagement by placement upon a ground or floor surface, to each of which is fixed at least one bollard member upstanding therefrom. At least one flexible coupling line (17, 404) passes from at least one foot member to at least one other foot member thereby to couple separate foot members such that impact forces inducing movement in one coupled foot member are transmissible to another coupled foot member via the at least one flexible coupling line.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 27, 2012Publication date: January 2, 2014Applicant: ATG Access Ltd.Inventor: Robert N. Patent number: 8616802Abstract: An security barrier underground footing (12), and a security barrier post (10) are provided. The footing (12) comprises a substantially vertical shaft (16) having a back plate (14) and a foot plate (18) both arranged substantially perpendicular to the shaft (16) and extending to at least one side thereof. In use, the footing (12) is at least partially buried. The back plate (14) is attached to the rear facing side of the shaft (16) away from which an impact will occur and is located at a position that, in use, is flush with or slightly below a surface in which the footing (12) is buried, and the foot plate (18) is towards the lower end of the shaft (16), at a position spaced from the back plate (16).Type: GrantFiled: January 11, 2010Date of Patent: December 31, 2013Inventors: Robert Gerrard, Marcus Gerrard

Patent number: 8607488Abstract: An advertising system for a bollard includes a bollard shield that can be installed over a conventional bollard. The bollard shield includes a shield inner diameter greater than the bollard outer diameter, forming a shield gap between the bollard and the bollard shield. One or more compressible foam pads are positioned in the shield gap between the bollard and the bollard shield. A resilient bollard sheath can be rolled onto the bollard shield. The bollard sheath includes advertising or graphical materials disposed thereon. The bollard sheath is generally replaceable without replacing the entire bollard shield. A removable sheath panel may be detachably secured on the bollard sheath to provide additional advertising or graphical material. The sheath panel may be interchangeably and replaced with additional sheath panels having different advertising information.Type: GrantFiled: June 7, 2011Date of Patent: December 17, 2013Assignee: Screen Trans Development Corp.Inventor: Brandon Steele Johnston

Patent number: 8596904Abstract: A non-lethal vehicle device provides for the selective, remotely-deployed controlled stop of a targeted vehicle regardless of wheel or undercarriage configuration. The device is comprised of a combination of a remote arm/safe mechanism, a remote deployment controller, spike/membrane deployment mechanism(s), a “speed bump” type housing that can protrude (be driven over until deployed) or be submerged, and one or more membranes with a plurality of spikes. A combination of sensors may provide independent deployment once armed.Type: GrantFiled: May 24, 2012Date of Patent: December 3, 2013Assignee: Pacific Scientific Energetic Materials Company (Arizona), LLCInventors: Mynor J. Patent number: 8596903Abstract: A method for absorbing vehicle's impact includes primarily absorbing impact energy of the vehicle by dragging action of a front barrier and a first dragging kinetic frictional rolling force inducing member that are sequentially inserted and installed in a front end portion of a rolled tube made of a soft material, so that a maximum deceleration of the vehicle slows to 20 g or less. The method further includes dragging a second dragging kinetic frictional rolling force inducing member having a kinetic friction coefficient larger than that of the first dragging kinetic frictional rolling force inducing member and installed at an intermediate portion of the rolled tube to secondarily absorb and reduce kinetic energy.Type: GrantFiled: May 24, 2010Date of Patent: December 3, 2013Assignee: Impact Blackhole Co., Ltd.Inventor: Kwang Yong Hur

Publication number: 20130314254Abstract: Horizontal road barrier gates pivot on vertical posts to swing horizontally across a flooded roadway to block traffic. Floodwater contact plates or paddles on the road barrier gate bottoms are configured and positioned to move the road barrier gates from the force of the floodwater to swing the road barrier gates horizontally across the roadway to block traffic from crossing the flooded road from both directions. A heavy tension spring on each barrier gate normally keeps the road barrier gate off the road and allows the barrier gate to pivot from obstructing the traffic back to its original non-blocking position once flood water recedes.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 2, 2013Publication date: November 28, 2013Inventor: John D. Patent number: 8590439Abstract: A barrier that includes attack resistant pane(s) (see DEFINITIONS section). In this way, a person behind the barrier can be protected when they are outside. More specifically, the person behind the barrier is protected, at least to some extent, from both: (i) vehicular attacks; and (ii) blast (for example, bombs) and/or ballistic (for example, bullet) attacks. Also, the protected person can see what is happening across the barrier because of the attack-resistant pane(s). Also, if the barrier is unanchored then it can be moved from place to place, for example, by heavy equipment, so that the same barrier can be re-deployed at different outdoor locations (or indoor locations) on an as-needed basis. Preferably, the barrier also includes framing pieces that secure the attack-resistant pane(s) to the body of the barrier, with the framing pieces being covered on one side by an attack-resistant material (preferably, hardened steel).Type: GrantFiled: January 8, 2013Date of Patent: November 26, 2013Assignee: Defenshield, Inc.Inventors: William Collins White, John Kleniatis
