  • Patent number: 7223049
Abstract: An apparatus, system and method for directionally degrading a paved surface. A substantially cylindrical rotary tool may include cutting inserts embedded within its cylindrical surface. The tool may be rotated about a rotational axis extending from a top end of the tool to its cutting head and may contact a paved surface such that the tool degrades the surface in a direction substantially normal thereto. The tool may be mounted to a motorized vehicle and adapted for independent movement to limit degradation to an isolated area, extend degradation beyond the width of the motorized vehicle, and/or avoid obstacles in the pavement.

  • Patent number: 7077601
Abstract: A machine for providing hot-in-place recycling and repaving of an existing asphalt-based pavement, in which the pavement is first heated. Using this machine the heated pavement surface is then scarified, and new aggregate is dispensed onto it, to form a recycled, preheated asphalt and aggregate mixture. This mixture is again heated and scarified to premix it, and a new pavement surface is now milled to grade and width by applying this mixture using a plurality of extension mills having a main frame. The pavement surface is then remilled to grade using a main mill. Rejuvenator fluid is introduced in the main mill of the machine, and mixed with the recycled asphalt and aggregate mxiture. Rejuvenator fluid is also introduced into a pug mill of the machine and again mixed with the recycled asphalt and aggregate mixture. The rejuvenator-enriched, recycled asphalt and aggregate windrow thus formed is then laid to grade using one or more screeds.

The grinding chamber carries a rotatable laterally-extending toothed grinding drum and the mixing chamber houses at least one toothed rotatable mixing wheel. A screed assembly is disposed behind the mixing chamber for extruding said mixture at a desired height so as to form a pavement. Pavement is recycled in-situ using the recycling assembly by grinding existing pavement, adding fluid asphalt to the pavement, optionally adding supplemental pavement, and mixing the fluid asphalt with the existing and/or supplemental pavement. The mixture is then extruded at the proper height by an adjustable screed. Each back wheel is supported by an articulation unit that is mechanically connected to the frame and cooperates with a first hydraulic cylinder that is capable of shifting the articulation unit in order to arrange the wheel from a position projecting laterally from the frame to a position re-entering with respect to the frame and vise-versa.

Abstract: Apparatus and methods for recycling concrete pavement in a coordinated procession include a breaker which turns the concrete into rubble first backhoe which rips up and cuts the concrete to rubble chunks, then another backhoe loads the chunks into a self-propelled crusher. If the concrete is reinforced with metallic structures, the first backhoe cuts those along with the concrete. The crusher separates the concrete from any steel and fines in the rubble. The crusher discharges the steels in collection bins mounted thereon. Various bins and ways of dumping them are disclosed. The crushed concrete is discharged to the roadway as multi-gradated aggregate. The crusher can also be made self-leveling by a slope control, slope sensors, and hydraulic cylinders arranged thereon in a closed loop feedback circuit.

Abstract: A road resurfacing device has a frame on which is mounted a ripper bar for ripping the road surface, to a controlled depth, and behind it a separator for separating coarse and fine material in the road surface such the coarse material is deposited on fine material. The frame is supported by rollers extending across the frame. The ripper bar has depending teeth in rows on both sides of the ripper bar and is rotatable so that either sets of teeth, which may be at different heights, rip the road surface. The separator is formed of ground turning discs mounted on angled shafts to direct material first to one side and then to the other. The ground turning discs rotate counter to the direction of movement of the frame. A method of resurfacing a gravel road includes ripping the surface of the gravel road to break up fine and coarse material near the surface of the gravel road; and separating coarse material from fine material such that coarse material is deposited on top of the fine material.
