  • Patent number: 11739480
Abstract: The present invention provides improved paving vehicles for following a supply truck for use in paving asphalt roadways. The paving vehicles of the present invention need not be transported on a trailer, and are capable of traveling at low or relatively high speeds on their own. This is accomplished through the use of novel chassis and propulsion systems having two rear axles, with each axle coupled directly to its own hydraulic motor, such that each of the two hydraulic motors provides power to one axle. Embodiments of the invention also include reciprocating conveyor apparatus and methods, such that the conveyor apparatus may be moved to a lowered position to receive the gravity discharge of materials from a hopper and supply truck during a paving operation, and moved to a raised position in order to provide a wide margin of ground clearance when driving the paving vehicle, or loading or unloading the paving vehicle from a trailer.

The rear side includes a back wall disposed between two rearwardly extending top and bottom walls which, in turn, are connected to downwardly and upwardly protruding lips respectively to form a C-shaped pocket for receiving a stake holder. The stake holder includes right and left flanges that abuttingly engage the back wall and that fit between the top and bottom walls and that are partially disposed between the upper and lower lips and the back wall. The stake holder further comprises a pocket portion that is connected to and disposed between right and left flanges. The pocket portion extends outwardly to define an apex which provides a looped pocket for receiving a stake.

Abstract: A system and method to allow a paving machine to form tight radii in continuous extrusions such as curbs and gutters is disclosed. A shift cylinder is used with the steering mechanism of a typical paving machine to allow sharp radius turns. The steering cylinder is used to pivot the track of the paving machine about its leg and the steering cylinder is used to pivot the leg relative to the frame of the paving machine. A hydraulic circuit is operator activated to allow fluid flow through a flow divider to ensure each cylinder operates in concert.

Abstract: A motor grader can be adapted for laying down a layer of granular material such as base rock or cold mix asphalt by mounting a dispensing hopper attachment onto the front of the motor grader and a spreading and leveling screed onto the moldboard. As the motor grader advances, it pushes a dump truck that continuously loads materials into the hopper. Those materials are in turn continuously discharged at a metered rate of flow through the bottom of the hopper and onto the roadbed. The resulting swath of materials passes between the front wheels of the grader as the grader continues to advance, whereupon the screed engages the swath and spreads the materials in opposite lateral directions while leveling them to the desired depth.

Abstract: A molding device for placement of formed cementitious material such as concrete on a mounting surface. The device is used in combination with a supply of pressurized cementitious material communicated through a hose from a conventional cement pump or the like. It features a mold unit having an a compression chamber at a first end communicating with an extrusion chamber at a second end. Cement material is forced into the compression chambers from the cement pump and extruded from the exit orifice of the extrusion chamber. The device is propelled forward by the pressure from the injected cement against the front of the device and away from the formed material means control any upward travel of said mold unit caused by said internal pressure against said top wall. Weights may be added to the top of the device to limit upward travel and a steering mechanism may be added to the front of the device to steer it on a defined course.

Abstract: A ditch forming apparatus makes the finishing touches on the ground work whereat the ditch is to be formed, pours the concrete, screeds the concrete, and finishes the surface of the concrete. The apparatus uses a hopper with and open top and an open bottom to receive as well as pour the concrete. An extension on the front of the apparatus has a pair of sloped sides joined by a flat bottom making the final shaping of the ground prior to concrete pour. The back edge of the open bottom screeds the concrete while a skid attached to the rear of the apparatus finishes the surface of the poured concrete, the skid having surfaces that are generally parallel with the sides of the extension.

Abstract: An apparatus for continuously shaping and extruding a longitudinally extending curb of moldable material. The device provides a self-contained and self-powered platform for modular curb forming inserts of multiple disciplines including auger extrusion and vibratory slip form. Moldable material is supplied to a feed hopper for the modular auger/slip form inserts that creates and dispenses a shaped curb bed. Leveling sensors and guides compensate for irregular surface gradients maintaining the orientation of the formed curb shape.

Abstract: The curb forming and extruding machine forms continuous concrete edging while reducing and/or substantially eliminating voids, flat spots or weak areas caused by smoothed sections in the packed concrete. Also, concrete bridging in the hopper, and the associated problems, are reduced and/or eliminated. The curb forming machine includes a plunger which is driven along a path of travel including a forward position to force the curb forming material from the lower hopper section into and through the curb extrusion mold, an upward position so that the plunger extends into the upper hopper section, and a rearward position away from the curb mold and in the lower hopper section. The plunger extending into the upper section of the hopper eliminates concrete bridging and also scores the concrete as it packs it into the mold.

Abstract: A contouring device and method for contouring three-dimensionally curved surfaces includes an elongated contouring assembly that is supported at opposite ends by a pair of fluid cylinders. The fluid cylinders are controlled to raise and lower the ends of the contouring assembly independently of each other, thereby allowing the contouring assembly to create a three-dimensionally curved surface as it passes over an area to be contoured. The control of one of the fluid cylinders is based on a comparison of the measured position of a first end of the contouring assembly with a profile of the surface to be leveled that is stored in a computer memory. The measurement of the position of the first end of the contouring assembly is achieved by a tracking device which tracks the position of a target positioned on the first end of the contouring assembly and which determines the three dimensional position of the target.
