A plurality of underground support columns is initially formed, with the support columns being spaced apart in a predetermined pattern. Interconnecting holes are thereafter formed between the underground support columns, wherein the interconnecting holes are formed by mechanically cutting the soil and simultaneously hydraulically mixing the mechanically cut soil with slurry injected at velocities of 200 feet per second or higher while maintaining a positive hydrostatic head in the hole relative to adjacent soil. As the interconnecting holes are being formed, the diameter of each interconnecting hole is extended by positioning a second high velocity slurry nozzle near the outer diameter of the interconnecting hole which injects high velocity into the adjacent soil to hydraulically cut the adjacent soil and mix it with the slurry.

  • Patent number: 5593248
Abstract: The remediation of heterogeneous subsurfaces is extremely time consuming and expensive with current and developing technologies. Although such technologies can adequately remove contaminants in the high hydraulic conductivity, coarse-grained sediments, they cannot access the contaminated low hydraulic conductivity fine-grained sediments. The slow bleed of contaminants from the fine-grained sediments is the primary reason why subsurface remediation is so time-consuming and expensive. This invention addresses the problem of remediating contaminated fine-grained sediments. It is intended that, in the future, a heterogeneous site be treated by a hybrid process that first remediates the high hydraulic conductivity, coarse-grained sediments, to be followed by the process, described in this invention, to treat the contaminated low hydraulic conductivity fine-grained sediments.

Abstract: A clay liner is provided for use in constructing low permeability barriers in the bottom of landfills and man-made bodies of water. The liner is provided in the form of a layer of bentonite preferably disposed between a primary carrier sheet and a cover sheet. At least one outer edge of either the cover sheet or the primary carrier sheet is made with the fabric that is allows substantial bentonite migration while the remaining areas of the cover sheet or primary carrier sheet are fabricated from a fabric that does not permit substantial bentonite migration. When two liners are disposed adjacent to each other in the bottom of the landfill or pond, the two liners are overlapped so that the more open portion of one liner engages the adjacent liner. Upon activation, the bentonite migrates through the more open fabric to create a seal between the two adjacent liners. The result is a self-sealing geosynthetic clay liner system.

  • Patent number: 5160221
Abstract: A liner is disclosed for a waterway of the type adapted to overlie the bottom of the waterway while a cementious layer covers and protects the liner. The liner itself is positioned at the bottom of the waterway by a machine having two elongated and spaced apart guide rails, each having a hollow interior and a longitudinally extending slot open at each end. The liner includes an elongated, flexible and water impervious sheet of a geomembrane material, such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC) or polyethylene material, having two spaced apart side edges. A strand is secured along each edge of the sheet by wrapping a flap of the sheet around the strand so that the flap encircles and then flatly abuts against one side of the sheet. A heat seal between the flap and the sheet bonds the flap and sheet together and the enclosed strand is then longitudinally slidably positioned within the interior of one of the guide rails.

Abstract: A canal paving machine is described. The machine comprises an elongated frame which extends transversely across the canal and which is propelled the length thereof while water continues to flow in the canal. A concrete paver is supported on the frame and is designed to lay concrete on one of the sides of the canal and at least a portion of the bottom of the canal as the frame is moved along the length of the canal. Dam members encircle the concrete paving apparatus to protect it from water flowing in the canal during the paving operation.

  • Patent number: 5059067
Abstract: A method for forming cementitious material, such as gunite or the like, to a desired cross-sectional profile for an interior structure such as a swimming pool, skateboard bowl or the like. A forming assembly includes a cutting edge, which is formed so as to correspond to the final desired profile of the structure. The forming assembly is mounted so as to be pivotable about a pivot axis substantially coincident with the center of the structure being formed. In this manner, when the cementitious material is applied to the side walls and bottom of the excavation to a depth slightly greater than that as finally desired, and the forming assembly pivoted 360.degree. about its pivot axis, the final desired cross-sectional profile of the structure is attained due to the action of the forming assembly striking off the excess material applied to the excavation.

  • Patent number: 5011338
Abstract: A canal trimming machine is disclosed which is designed to trim the bottom and sides of an earthen canal so that the canal may be lined and paved. The machine comprises a frame which extends across the width of the canal and which has propelling tracks at the opposite ends thereof which are driven along the canal in the proper direction and at the proper grade. A trimmer is longitudinally movably mounted on the frame and trims at least one-half of the bottom and a majority of one side of the canal. The trimmer is automatically positioned at the proper grade to ensure that the bottom and sides of the canal will be properly prepared for the lining and paving operation. A rock spreader is also mounted on the frame and trails behind the trimmer to fill low spots in the canal so that an even surface will be provided for the lining and trimming operation.

  • Patent number: 5002438
Abstract: A method for lining or relining a sewer manhole, apparatus comprising an improved leak resistant manhole, and a cementitious mixture for lining/relining manholes. A homogeneous, monolithic, cementitious liner is spray applied in place within a concrete or brick-and-mortar manhole infrastructure without forms, webbing, or re-bar. A manhole to be serviced is first located and spray cleaned with water. Loose concrete and mortar fragments of the original structure are forcibly removed. A cementitious mixture is spray-applied to the interior surfaces of the manhole to create a continuous, monolithic interior liner. This lining is configured substantially identically to the internal shape and geometry of the manhole. When the liner sets after installation, a substantially impervious water and chemical resistant barrier prevents manhole ingress/egress by ground water.

  • Patent number: 4948296
Abstract: A method of constructing a swimming pool by laying a concrete shell of 80 mm thickness without any substantial reinforcement. A glass reinforced plastic of 5 mm thickness is then laid over the concrete once the concrete has cured. This particular combination between the fiberglass and the concrete shell allows the shell to crack and move in relation to the reinforced plastic layer, without transmitting any stresses to the reinforced plastic layer. This results in a pool which allows any stresses due to soil subsidence, movement, etc. to be transmitted to the concrete shell and not the reinforced plastic layer thereby leaving the plastic layer free of cracks.
