The effective humectant composition is identified by determining the average moisture content of the soil for the humectant compositions applied at a minimum humectant concentration level, a maximum humectant concentration level, and at a first concentration level between the minimum and the maximum humectant concentration level. An average slope curve is generated by plotting the determined average moisture content of the soil for each applied humectant concentration levels from the minimum humectant concentration level to the maximum humectant concentration level. An effective humectant composition is determined when the generated average slope curve provides an increasing average moisture content along the entirety of a length of the generated average slope curve and when the generated average slope curve has a p value of 0.05 or less.

Abstract: Equipment serves to form consolidated soil columns having a non-circular cross-section, and includes a mast (2, 8), a rotary (3) which is rotatable and translatable along an axis parallel to the mast, a series of hollow rods (4) temporarily unlockable from the rotary (3), and a device to vary the rotational rate of the rotary in one or more prefixed angular ranges. A rotor (21) is directly secured to one of the rods of the string and operatively coupled to a device (20) generating control signals to vary the rotational speed of the rotary in response to the rotor angular position. A through clamp (10) is mounted to the rotatable mandrel of the rotary and is provided with locking members which can be activated to clamp a rod and make it integral to the rotary, and which can be deactivated to release the rod so as to allow the rotary to move relative to the rod.

Abstract: The present invention relates to in-place soil stabilization. Specifically, the present invention relates a method and device for measuring the increase in subsurface earth pressure during the injection of a stabilizing agent into the soil. The rise in sensor pressure indicates an increase in soil strength and bearing capacity. Therefore, real-time monitoring of these pressures may serve as a guide during the injection process.

Abstract: The present invention discloses a method for preparing and using an absorbent material for apolar compounds or mixtures of apolar compounds, such as organic solvents, mineral oil and derivatives thereof, lubricant oils, edible oils, inter alia. The absorbent material is composed of an fabric matrix of high porosity, low density and high mechanical resistance. This matrix is rendered water-proof, thus acquiring the property of absorbing apolar compounds or mixtures of apolar compounds.

Abstract: The process “Washing contaminated soils” solves the problem of cleansing and remediating soils and sediments and their fine fractions contaminated with toxic metals, using washing solution with chelating agents. The chelating agent forms water-soluble complexes with metals and thus facilitates metal removal from soils and sediments into the washing solution. In addition to toxic metals, the process according to the invention enables removal of organic pollutants from soils and sediments by using washing solution amended with surfactants, detergents or organic solvents in addition to chelating agents. The process according to the invention provides for simultaneous separation of the soil and sediment solid phase and used washing solution in a chamber filter press, and effective rinsing of the solid phase to remove all residual mobilized contaminants.

Abstract: A device for treating soil has a soil contact head having at least one discharge orifice therein, and a handle to which the soil contact head is attached. A discharge valve is with the at least one discharge orifice, and a controller is provided for controlling operation of the discharge valve. An actuation trigger is included for initiating an injection event, with the controller being responsive to the actuation trigger to operate the discharge valve in response to the actuation trigger initiating an injection event. The controller controls the duration during which the discharge valve is open during an injection event in response to a single actuation of the actuation trigger. A source of pressurized fluid is flowably connected to the discharge valve, wherein the discharge valve is operable to discharge pressurized fluid through the at least one discharge orifice during an injection event.

Abstract: A treatment slurry is emplaced in soil in columns formed by displacement of soil by a direct push rod, a vibrating beam, or otherwise. The treatment slurry is pumped into the impression created as the rod or vibrating beam is withdrawn from the subsurface, creating a vertical column in the subsurface with a cross-sectional shape of the rod or vibrating beam that is filled with the treatment slurry. The vertical columns are spaced at suitable distances to allow for diffusion of a treatment agent in the treatment slurry into the surrounding soils or sediments to treat the target contaminants in the subsurface soils or sediments.
