  • Patent number: 7445409
Abstract: The invention is directed to a cutting tool assembly that include multiple diamonds to define multiple cutting tips. A first diamond is positioned in the cutting tool assembly to create a first groove in a microreplication tool and a second diamond is positioned in the cutting tool assembly to create a second groove the microreplication tool, wherein the first and second grooves define integer pitch spacing of a microreplication structure to be created using the microreplication tool. In addition, a third diamond is positioned in the cutting tool assembly between the first and second diamonds to create a land feature in the microreplication tool between the first and second grooves. The invention can improve land feature creation by using a third diamond tip, rather than leaving the land features untooled and defined by the original untooled surface of micro-replication tool.

Abstract: A refined method to produce textured ?-Al2O3 layers in a temperature range of 750-1000° C. with a controlled texture and substantially enhanced wear resistance and toughness than the prior art is disclosed. The ?-Al2O3 layer is formed on a bonding layer of (Ti,Al)(C,O,N) with increasing aluminium content towards the outer surface. Nucleation of ?-Al2O3 is obtained through a nucleation step composed of short pulses and purges of Ti-containing and oxidizing steps. The ?-Al2O3 layer has a thickness ranging from 1 to 20 ?m and is composed of columnar grains. The length/width ratio of the alumina grains is from 2 to 15, preferably 6 to 10. The layer is characterized by a strong (110) growth texture, measured using XRD, and by the low intensity of (012), (104), (113), (024) and (116) diffraction peaks.

  • Publication number: 20080260478
Abstract: A PVD coating is disclosed, and in particular a nanoscale multilayer superlattice PVD coating comprising high hardness, a low friction coefficient and increased chemical inertness. The multilayer coating comprises a repeating bilayer represented by (VxMe(i-x))CyN(i-y)/(MezV(1-z))CyN(i-y) where 0.1?x?0.9; 0.01<y<0.99 and 0.1?z?0.9 and Me is a substantially pure metal or a metal alloy. The composition of the coating through the layers alternates from layer to layer according to a V-rich layer and a Me-rich layer modulated sequence. Vanadium is incorporated within the layer composition and has been found to act as a lubricating agent during sliding wear. Carbon, also incorporated within the coating, serves to further stabilise the friction coefficient thereby increasing the chemical inertness between cutting tool and workpiece material.

Abstract: A process is presented which produces at least one block of dense material constituted by hard particles dispersed in a binder phase, it being possible for the dense material to be enriched locally with binder phase by imbibition. The process includes bringing at least one imbibition area of a surface of the block, preferably coated with a coating material, into contact with an imbibiting material which locally enriches the block with binder phase. The block in contact with the imbibiting material is then subjected to a suitable thermal cycle constituted by heating, temperature maintenance and cooling. This serves to bring some or all of the imbibiting material and the binder phase of the block into the liquid state in such a manner that the enrichment with binder phase takes place solely through the imbibition area. The block is used in connection with the building of a drill bit or tool.
