Patent number: 7063488Abstract: In an insert holder for indexable cutting inserts, a clamping device is located which includes an L-shaped member having first and second arms. The first arm is received in a blind hole in the cutting insert and the second arm is actuated by a pressure screw. A free end portion of the second arm has a yoke received in a recessed annular waist portion of the screw so that movement of the screw causes the L-shaped member to rotate and push the insert downwardly against a base surface and laterally against an upright support surface. The insert has a central elevated plateau on its top side to enable a depth of the blind hole to be maximized.Type: GrantFiled: April 9, 2001Date of Patent: June 20, 2006Assignee: Sandvik Intellectual Property ABInventors: Robert Isaksson, Yusuke Seto

Patent number: 7048476Abstract: A cutter head with at least one insert clamp. Each insert clamp includes a wedge member fastened to the cutter head. The cutter head includes an insert slot, a clamping slot, and a threaded aperture. The wedge member, in one embodiment, is wedge shaped and includes a thru-opening. A fastener engages the threaded aperture in the cutter head and passes through the thru-opening in the clamping member. A cutter insert fits into the insert slot in the cutter head, and the wedge member secures the cutting insert against a surface of the cutter head.Type: GrantFiled: May 27, 2004Date of Patent: May 23, 2006Assignee: Misenheimer Saw & Tool, Inc.Inventors: Kevin L. Patent number: 6231276Abstract: In addition to having a stop member in the form of a hollow cylinder which is slotted and can be spread by means of an adjustment screw, an adjustable stop for a cutter adjustably arranged in a main casting or body of a tool is also provided with a sleeve member which can be inserted into a longitudinal bore of the stop member. The sleeve member has inside threads which can be brought into engagement with the adjustment screw. This results in an improvement of the load carrying capacity of the threaded connection. Since the sleeve member can move in the adjustment direction, the bending load on the adjustment screw is reduced.Type: GrantFiled: April 30, 1999Date of Patent: May 15, 2001Assignee: Kennametal Hertel AG Werkzeuge + HartstoffeInventors: Gebhard Müller, Horst Jäger, Martin Voll

Patent number: 4580472Abstract: A cutting tool assembly comprising a tool holder with a clamping collet and an interchangeable tool insert with a clamping shaft engageable by the clamping collet, matching conical surfaces on the periphery of the tool holder and of the tool insert providing centering as well as axial and radial force transmitting functions, while cooperating spline profiles on the assembly components provide a separate tangential force transmitting function. The clamping collet and the clamping shaft engage each other with multiple conical coupling faces which, under a pulling action of a rod connected to the collet, produce an axial pull on the tool insert while spreading radially between the clamping shaft and the tool holder to produce a radial wedging action. These conical coupling faces may be part of axially spaced identical ridges, the clamping collet expanding radially to clear the ridges for insertion, or they may be flanks of cooperating threads, the clamping collet being rotatable.Type: GrantFiled: July 23, 1984Date of Patent: April 8, 1986Inventor: Hermann L. Patent number: 4329091Abstract: A floating wedge is described for facilitating the mounting of an indexable insert in a pocket of an indexable cutting tool. The floating wedge includes a main body member having opposed leading and trailing surfaces and a swivel plate member having opposed leading and trailing surfaces. The leading surface of the main body member and the trailing surface of the swivel plate member are disposed in abutting relationship and are provided with complementary configurations, thereby enabling the relative slidable movement between the members such that orientation of the leading surface of the swivel plate member relative to the trailing surface of the main body member may be adjusted. The adjustability between the members enables full and equal contact pressure to be established between the floating wedge, the indexable insert and the walls of the insert pocket, thereby eliminating localized stresses and preventing insert failure.Type: GrantFiled: May 7, 1980Date of Patent: May 11, 1982Assignee: General Electric CompanyInventor: Donald S. Patent number: 4111587Abstract: A tool holder including a holder body having a retaining bore for slidably accommodating a bar-type tip. A tapered bore is provided in concentric relationship with the retaining bore, and wedge means is inserted within the tapered bore. The wedge means is movable in the axial direction thereof; whereby the wedge means is adapted to be brought into clamping engagement with the outer periphery of the bar-type tip.Type: GrantFiled: July 27, 1977Date of Patent: September 5, 1978Assignee: International Patent Transactions Company LimitedInventor: Takefumi Hatanaka
