  • Publication number: 20100061814
Abstract: A cutting tool includes an insert holder and a cutting insert releasably retained between upper and lower jaws of the insert holder. The lower jaw is provided with forward and rear projections. The forward projection has forward projection front and back abutment surfaces inclined, respectively, at first and second angles to a feed direction, the first angle being greater than the second angle. The cutting insert has a cutting portion adjacent a longitudinally extending shaft portion and a recess in a lower insert surface. The recess has front and back recess abutment surfaces inclined, respectively, at the first and second angles to a lower edge of the shaft portion. The forward projection front abutment surface abuts the front recess abutment surface, and the forward projection back abutment surface abuts the back recess abutment surface.

  • Patent number: 6926472
Abstract: A cutting tool includes a basic body having a insert seat and a rotatable cutting insert mounted on a connecting surface of the seat. The insert includes a chip cutting top side, a bottom side and an outer peripheral side, whereby there is a cutting edge in the area between the top side and the peripheral side. Formed on the connecting surface of the seat is at least one first ring formation, and formed in the bottom surface of the insert is at least one second ring formation having an equal diameter as the first ring formation. At least one of the first and second ring formations comprises a groove. The first and second ring formations are in direct or indirect engagement with each other in order to form a guide between the cutting insert and the basic body that permits rotation of the cutting insert about its own center axis and simultaneously keeps the insert in an exactly defined radial position.

  • Publication number: 20020192042
Abstract: A turning tool includes a holder and an cutting insert clamped to the holder. The insert and the holder include respective support surfaces pressed against one another. Each of those support surfaces includes first and second sets of ridges oriented substantially perpendicular to one another. The ridges on the insert's support surface engage respective ridges on the holder's support surface to prevent movement of the insert relative to the holder in two directions oriented perpendicularly to one another. At least one of the first and second support surfaces has its first and second sets of ridges arranged in respective first and second regions of that support surface. The other support surface could have its sets of ridges arranged in a similar fashion, or its sets of ridges could occupy the same region of the support surface to form a waffle pattern. The insert and the holder include respective holes which are aligned to receive a clamping element.

  • Patent number: 6231276
Abstract: In addition to having a stop member in the form of a hollow cylinder which is slotted and can be spread by means of an adjustment screw, an adjustable stop for a cutter adjustably arranged in a main casting or body of a tool is also provided with a sleeve member which can be inserted into a longitudinal bore of the stop member. The sleeve member has inside threads which can be brought into engagement with the adjustment screw. This results in an improvement of the load carrying capacity of the threaded connection. Since the sleeve member can move in the adjustment direction, the bending load on the adjustment screw is reduced.

  • Patent number: 6227771
Abstract: A metal-cutting mechanism includes an externally threaded screw and a set of non-rotatable insert holders spaced apart equidistantly along an axis of the screw. There are at least first, second, third, and fourth holders arranged axially in succession. The first holder is axially fixed. The second, third and fourth holders are axially movable relative to the first holder. The screw is rotatable relative to the second, third, and fourth holders and is connected thereto such that in response to each revolution of the screw, the second holder is moved in a first axial direction by a distance x, the third holder is moved in the first axial direction by a distance 2x, and the fourth holder is moved in the first axial direction by a distance 3x, whereby the equidistant spacing between the holders is changed by the distance x.

  • Patent number: 6155753
Abstract: A boring cutter assembly with fine adjustment is provided for finely adjusting the diameter of the bore to be formed and for compensating wear of the blade. The boring cutter assembly includes a cutter shaft including a distal end with a cutter seat for receiving a blade. A countersink is defined adjacent to the cutter seat. A bottom wall that defines the countersink includes a screw hole. The countersink and the screw hole together receive an adjusting screw. A first scale is provided on the distal end of the cutter seat and around the countersink. A second scale is provided on the top face of the fine adjusting screw and corresponds to the first scale. A side of the blade that defines a portion of the cutting clearance angle of the blade cooperates with the pitch of the fine adjusting screw, such that the blade is laterally moved when the fine adjusting screw moves vertically as a result of rotation thereof, thereby adjusting the diameter of the bore to be formed.

  • Patent number: 5536119
Abstract: A cutting insert is mounted in a pocket of a holder so that rotation of an adjustment member mounted in the holder produces rotation of the insert about a center axis. The insert includes top and bottom surfaces interconnected by a side surface. The side surface includes a curved portion engaging side support surfaces of the holder, a pair of planar surfaces extending from respective ends of the curved portion, and a portion extending from one of the planar surfaces to define a parallel land. The curved portion engages the adjustment member so that rotation of the latter produces a fine adjustment of the parallel land.

  • Patent number: 5447395
Abstract: A chamfering tool made up of a holder and a double headed blade. The holder is substantially cylindrical, with a bullet nose at one end and a turned down shank at the other end. An angularly offset bore for holding the blade penetrates the bullet nose at an angle to the holder longitudinal axis, and also penetrates the holder cylindrical wall. When the blade is installed in the bore, one or both heads externally expose their respective operating cutting edges. The blade is substantially cylindrical, with cutting edges at each end being perpendicular to and intersecting the longitudinal axis of the blade. The novel arrangement enables the chamfering tool to work in tight quarters, to be readily removed and easily sharpened, and enables both right and left handed cutting by a simple adjustment.

  • Patent number: 4201501
Abstract: A cutting tool with a holder and a removable insert that has a flat positioning surface and a cutting edge located in the plane of said surface. The insert is carried in a slot of the holder, with the positioning surface of the insert clamped against a locating surface of the holder that in part forms the slot. The locating surface of the holder orients and locates the insert and, hence, the cutting edge in a plane that remains unchanged after the cutting edge is sharpened by grinding and lapping the positioning surface of the insert. Where the cutting edge is formed in a tip or bit of diamond or other cutting material different from the insert, the tip or bit need not be removed from the insert and reset for grinding or lapping. In use, the insert is clamped to the holder intermediate its ends and contact with the locating surface is restricted to spaced areas on opposite sides of a clamping screw.
