    Abstract: The method and apparatus for drilling holes and optionally inserting fasteners of the present invention provide for efficiently drilling holes through a multiple-layer structure because the layers are securely held together during the drilling by an electromagnet and a clamp, each on opposite sides of the structure. The electromagnet and clamp hold the layers together so tightly that burrs do not form within the holes and debris does not accumulate between the layers and, therefore the layers do not have to be disassembled after drilling. In addition, the apparatus and method of the present invention provide for initially drilling the hole with a countersink and for inserting a fastener into the hole, through the electromagnet, immediately after drilling the hole, such that the hole does not have to be revisited after reassembly and drying of the sealant in order to drill a countersink and/or insert a fastener.

    Abstract: The drilling of a hole through at least two structural components in alignment with a predrilled hole or marked location in one of the structural components is facilitated by a clamping mechanism that has a bail with two legs. One leg carries a first clamping section with a guide channel for a centering pin or a drill bit. When the centering pin has served its purpose it is removed from the guide channel which then guides the drill bit. The other leg carries a second clamping section opposite the first clamping section. The second clamping section has a pressure bushing drivable by a clamping drive for clamping the second structural component against the first structural component for drilling a hole through all structural components including through a predrilled hole or for simultaneously drilling all structural components at the marked location. The pressure bushing has a hollow free end forming a cavity.

Drill guide holes are provided in the clamp members or in separately adjustable drill guide members. Dowel guide slots are provided in an alignment member which may be part of the upper clamp member. The alignment member has dowel guide slots in it which are in alignment with the drill guide holes in the guide member(s). Adjustment can provide for dowel drilling the same distance from one workpiece surface for aligning the surface. The jig can also be used for mounting the end of one plank against the side of a second plank either at its end or away from the end.

In another embodiment the base has an upper arm above the work pieces and the drill guide is mounted on the end of a screw that is threaded into the upper arm. The drill guide is moved by the toggle clamp or screw against the work pieces to hold them clamped to the table and a drill bit is advanced in each angled guide channel into the work pieces to form a pocket joint. A screw is driven through a guide channel into the previously drilled pocket hole to join the work pieces.

Another embodiment of the invention includes a reciprocated guide useful in drilling shelf holes. The guide is attached to the positioning block opposite that containing the securing means, and reciprocated by means of allen screws.
