Abstract: Damaged threads in a blind tapped hole are repaired with a tap having an elongated shaft with a plurality of outer faces, and a plurality of flutes corresponding to the number of shaft outer faces, each flute has an outer face with a lower segment with cutting threads corresponding to the hole threads, and is moveable radially between a closed position toward the longitudinal axis and a radially expanded position in which the threads of the flute outer face mesh with the threads of the hole. The tap is inserted into the hole while the flutes are in the closed position so that the cutting threads are below the damaged threads. The shaft is then inserted between the flutes to move the flutes to their expanded positions meshing the cutting threads with undamaged threads below the damaged threads. The tap is then rotated to repair the damaged threads.
Abstract: A thread repair tool comprises a support, a removable cutter, and a clamp for holding the cutter in position. The support can be provided with a leg supporting the cutter. The inner surface of the leg and the inner surface of the cutter can be tapered so that moving the cutter away from the head of the support can change the cutting diameter.
Abstract: A pipe string in an oil well has a cable 2 slidingly attached along it. It may be necessary to break the pipe string. Apparatus is provided for controlling the position of a fracture in the cable, as it is desirable to break the cable at about the same point. The apparatus comprises a pocket 1 attached to the cable and having a passage through which the cable passes, and upper and lower nipples 5 and 6 attached to the cable in the pocket. The lower face 5′ of the nipple 5 is skewed relative to the lower internal face 3′ of the pocket and the facing faces (5″, 6′) of the two nipples are skewed relative to each other, so bending and kinking the cable when tension is applied. The cable therefore breaks at the bend or kink. The pipe string includes a plurality of such apparatuses located at spaced points along its length.
Abstract: A tool for cutting an annular groove on the interior of a substantially cylindrical surface comprising a primary body having a pointed base for anchoring the cutting tool and a portion for being grasped and rotated by a power source, at least one groove cutting assembly attached to and extending horizontally from the primary body towards the internal cylindrical surface, and means coupled to said primary body and moveably spaced from the cutting assembly for selectively urging a portion of the cutting assembly outwardly a predetermined distance thereby enabling a groove of predetermined depth to be made on the interior of the interior cylindrical surface when the primary body is rotated.
Abstract: A device for removing pipe attached to a fitting includes cutting apparatus for removing the pipe disposed within the fitting. A wrench apparatus is connected to the cutting apparatus for gripping the fitting to prevent its movement when the cutting apparatus is activated. Alternatively, this device may be used as a reaming device which permits radial movement of the cutting blades into engagement with a pipe after the cutting blades have been inserted within the pipe.
Abstract: A skiving tool having a retractable knife for use in combination with a roller burnishing tool for finishing the internal surface of a cylindrical hole. The retractable knife includes a pair of radially extendible knife holders defining a camming path having an axial portion and an angled portion. A push dart has a camming element with complementary camming surfaces which rides along the camming path. Axial actuation of the push dart causes the knife holders to extend radially into a stable, locked position. The roller burnishing tool includes a roller race having a central axis and a frustoconical outer surface tapering radially outward and axially forward. A plurality of frustoconically tapered rollers are arranged about the outer surface for rolling engagement with the outer surface with the smaller ends of the rollers facing forward. The taper of the rollers is such that the outermost surface portion of each roller is parallel to the central axis.
Abstract: The specification and drawings disclose a collapsible tap of the type including an elongated, cylindrical body or housing having an axially extending actuating plunger mounted for selective movement longitudinally of the body. The outer end of the plunger has a generally conical portion which functions to provide camming surfaces. Suitable chaser cutting elements are mounted for radial movement in the body. Each element includes a surface in engagement with a corresponding camming surface of the plunger such that axial movement of the plunger produces radial movement of the elements. The elements are maintained in engagement with the camming surfaces by clip members which extend radially from the conical portion of the plunger with resilient, laterally directed terminal portions that engage grooves formed in the sides of the elements.
Abstract: An adjustable floating reamer characterized by its relatively great length and small diameter embodying a closure cap for the diametrically slotted end of a shank member which has a long and thin tubular portion which closely embraces and supports the slotted end of the shank member and which has a closed end in abutting engagement with the slotted end of the shank member to define therewith a rectangular slot in which overlapping reamer blades are slidably supported for radial adjustment and for radial floating movement about a pivot which is spaced a great distance from the blades so that no binding action occurs during the floating movement of the blades during use of the reamer.
