The measurement system may include sensors (e.g., displacement, acceleration, and/or force sensors) that may be utilized to detect potentially hazardous operation of the burr instrument. For example, when penetrating through the cortex of the bone the measurement system may be operated in a unicortical mode such that when the burr passes through the cortex of the bone, the instrument operating may be arrested to avoid damage to surrounding tissue. Moreover, the system may be utilized to detect a slip or sudden loss of contact of the burr instrument such that the instrument may be arrested to avoid damage to surrounding tissue. Furthermore, the burr instrument may have a predetermined ramp-up speed.

Abstract: The invention is directed to a drill system that better uses the power curve of modern machine tools. The drill system uses a two-step drill, utilizing IC inserts to perform the major hole diameter cutting, and a central drilling system. In examples, the IC inserts can be set in a drill head in a single or double effective configuration. A central drilling system cuts the remaining minor diameter portion of the hole, and is configured to see less cutting surface footage, due to its position from the rotating center of the tool. The central drilling system may include a “self-centering” geometry, such that the drill head of the tool with be guided throughout the depth of the hole. The drill system allows for a large diameter deep hole that remains straight throughout to be drilled at higher speed and lighter feed rates thus offering a more productive tool that takes advantage of the power curves and lower thrust capabilities of modern machine tools.

  • Patent number: 6033161
Abstract: The invention is a revolving pilot tool. The inventor's revolving pilot has a cylindrical shank which is attached to the tool usually in the center of the bottom of the tool. This shank has a threaded opening in its center. Over the shank is placed a cylindrical bearing. Over this bearing is placed another cylindrical piece that forms the outer surface of the pilot. To hold the bearing and the cylindrical piece upon the shank a screw and o-ring is usually used. This pilot is usually attached to the bottom of the tool to align the tool to an already drilled opening. However, it could be attached above a drill to align the tool to an opening being drilled. The pilot can also align the tool during line boring.

  • Patent number: 5785466
Abstract: A tool for aligning a portable boring bar for reboring of a bore at a location relative to a further bore including at least first and second "H"-shaped rigid guide members that are hingedly connected to permit their outboard ends to be selectively spaced apart. Each guide member includes first and second side members adapted to be disposed on opposite surfaces of an equipment component which is to be rebored, each side member for the first guide member having an outboard end designed to be aligned with a first bore, and each of the side members of the second guide member being designed to be aligned with a further bore spaced apart from the first bore. The tool serves as an alignment tool and/or as a mount for the drive unit of a portable boring bar.

  • Patent number: 5697737
Abstract: A drill includes support pads for supporting and guiding the drill in the drill hole. The support pads are formed as parallelepiped-shaped cemented carbide bodies which each have two wing-shaped protrusions on their longitudinal sides. In a corresponding way, the drill head of the drill includes recesses with two bulged parts on the long sides. This gives the support pad a determined axial position and strengthens the support pad at the weakening caused by the central hole. Further, the support pad can be turned half a revolution if one of its ends becomes damaged since the end spaces do not have to function as abutment surfaces.

  • Patent number: 5471730
Abstract: A method for restoring worn bores in a turret or other tool punch press is disclosed. The worn turret bore is refurbished by using a special boring bar and drive mechanism to enlarge the diameter of the worn section of the bore. A cylindrical sleeve is inserted into the re-bored bore and secured therein. The internal diameter of the sleeve has been machined to correspond to the unworn internal diameter of the bore. The outside diameter of the sleeve is sized to provide a slipfit with the enlarged diameter of the bore. Axial alignment of the worn turret bore is restored according to the invention by locating the boring bar along an axial centerline of an unworn region of the bore. The unworn region of the bore is the lower portion thereof and is the same diameter and in alignment with bore as originally machined. The boring bar utilizes the unworn portion of the bore as a reference when re-boring the worn portion of the bore.

  • Patent number: 5062187
Abstract: A portable system for reworking the inside diameter of heavy oil field casing, and especially casing that has irregularities on the inner surface thereof that render the casing unsuitable for use in deep wells. A cutting head assembly is rotated as it is forced into the interior of a joint of casing. The cutting head assembly includes a mandrel which turns a special cutting device having a plurality of cutters for engaging and cutting the inner wall of the pipe as the entire cutterhead is forced to travel through the pipe. Alignment members attached to the mandrel on either side of the cutting device maintain the longitudinal axis of the cutters in proper alignment to produce the desired new pipe inside diameter. After the first half of the pipe is sized or trued, the joint of casing is reversed and the other half is cut to the same new desired inside diameter. Included in the system is a special grinder for reworking pipe having only marginal imperfections.
