Patent number: 6530727Abstract: The machining head for machining valve seats comprises a driving system, a housing, a carriage feed assembly, a cutting tip mounted on the carriage, and a counterweight assembly. The driving system rotates a machining head on a spindle axis, and further provides independent vertical translation of each of a driving arbor and a spindle, both of which are independent of the rotation of the spindle. The carriage has both forward and backward feed capability for moving the cutting tip radially inward or outward as it cuts. Vertical movement of the arbor is converted into force for moving the carriage by a cantilever pivoting around a fixed point. The counterweight assembly, linked to the arbor by a second cantilever, counterbalances the shift in weight caused by the movement of the carriage in order to maintain dynamic balancing as the machining head rotates.Type: GrantFiled: April 6, 2001Date of Patent: March 11, 2003Assignee: Harmand Family Limited PartnershipInventors: Brice Harmand, Pierre Harmand

Patent number: 4930948Abstract: A valve seat refitting apparatus. A cylindrical main body portion has a longitudinal bore which receives a centering guide. Longitudinal slots around the outer periphery of the main body portion receive cutting blades rigidly attached to cutting blade support. Radial and longitudinal positioning screws serve to position the supports and cutting blades to refit a variety of valve seats. Set screws lock the blade supports in the desired position. A bushing removably attached to the centering guide also allows the centering guide to be adapted to fit different size valve seats.Type: GrantFiled: August 29, 1989Date of Patent: June 5, 1990Inventor: William H. Patent number: 4830551Abstract: Boiler tube repair apparatus includes elongated guide rail structure for securing to a boiler tube panel adjacent a desired cut region, and three tool assemblies for mounting on the guide rail structure. Each tool assembly includes carriage structure with guide structure for engaging the guide rail structure and support structure on which a tube machining tool is mounted and that defines a tool movement axis dedicated to and coordinated with that tool. Each machining tool includes a drive motor, a manual motor control, a drive shaft and a machining member such as a cutter disc or head.Type: GrantFiled: December 10, 1987Date of Patent: May 16, 1989Assignee: SMA Controls, Inc.Inventors: Matthew T. Patent number: 4761104Abstract: A portable milling tool for milling pipes, tubes, cylinders, and the like has an expandable sleeve at one end thereof for securing and centering the tool to a workpiece. An adjustable in-line rod connects the sleeve to the tool and permits the sleeve to release or secure the workpiece. An in-line shaft moves the tool into or out of engagement with the workpiece. The tool also is of compact design allowing it to be used in on-site situations wherein tool size is a problem as in milling boiler tubes.Type: GrantFiled: March 21, 1985Date of Patent: August 2, 1988Inventor: Tollief O. Hillestad

Patent number: 4709761Abstract: Disclosed is apparatus and method for a system useful in establishing a metal to metal seal between conduit joints in wells. A milling tool having means controlling down force on and positioning the cutter is used to cut and/or finish a seat on a shoulder in a well conduit, which will mate and seal with metal seal surfaces on seal units lowered on conduits into the well. One seal unit has elastomeric seals in addition to the metal seals.Type: GrantFiled: May 27, 1986Date of Patent: December 1, 1987Assignee: Otis Engineering CorporationInventor: John R. Patent number: 4693643Abstract: This planing device is operable for progressively planing or cutting the end of a plastic pipe to the desired length, or for reaming out a piece of plastic pipe fixed in a plastic pipe fitting in such a manner that the plastic pipe fitting can be reused. The pipe planing device is portable and is rotated by an electric drill or the like and includes a cylindrical pilot removably supported on radially spaced-apart spider-like cutter arms having cutter blades attached to their outer ends and extending outwardly beyond the cylindrical pilot a distance which is equal to the thickness of the plastic pipe to be cut or reamed. The outer circumference of the cylindrical pilot is dimensioned to provide a snug rotatable fit within the end of the plastic pipe to be planed and operates to center the planing device along the longitudinal axis of the plastic pipe.Type: GrantFiled: May 20, 1986Date of Patent: September 15, 1987Assignee: E&A Heyworth Enterprises, Inc.Inventor: Malcolm I. Patent number: 4666350Abstract: An improved boring bar for machining bearings in an engine block or the like includes a plurality of circumferentially spaced wear pads which extend radially beyond the surface of the bar and form the sole points of support between the bar and the inner race of a bearing in which the bar is slideably received. Preferably, at least two of the wear pads are radially displaceable within slots on oposite circumferential sides of longitudinally aligned cutting tools which are secured to the bar. The pads are removably mounted in the slots within the bar by screws to allow rapid replacement of the pads due to wear. A thin layer of resilient material, such as neoprene rubber, is captured between the radially displaceable pads and the bottom of the slot, and urge the pads away from the bar, thereby biasing the bar in a direction away from the cutting tools and toward one side of the inner race of the bearing. The constant lateral biasing of the bar eliminates tool chatter and improves machining accuracy.Type: GrantFiled: January 24, 1984Date of Patent: May 19, 1987Inventor: Leo P. Nicholas

Patent number: 4646413Abstract: The invention relates to a drill jig assembly for use in the removing a tube from a wall structure. the device fits within the tube and defines drill guide grooves along its length such that, a rotating drill inserted into the guide grooves will cut away a portion of the wall thickness of the tube. When portions of the tubing wall thickness have been reduced, the tube may be readily inwardly collapsed so as to easily remove it from the wall structure.Type: GrantFiled: June 18, 1985Date of Patent: March 3, 1987Assignee: Tri Tool Inc.Inventors: Lawson H.
