  • Patent number: 4630694
Abstract: A hole opener for placement in a drill string having a body generally comprising a collar, a triangular mid-section, a triangular shaped pilot and a bull nose. The collar provides means for attaching the tool body to the drill string. The triangular mid-section has three longitudinal, radially spaced apart blade members that are parallel to the central axis of the tool body so that the blades can cut into the walls of the bore hole to enlarge the size of the bore hole. Three annular flow zones span the distance between the blade members so that fluids and cuttings can circulate through the bore hole. The pilot section also has three longitudinal, radially spaced apart blade members that are parallel to the central axis of the tool body bore and three annular flow zones which span the distance between the blade members of the pilot. The pilot section is downhole from the mid-section.

  • Patent number: 4626143
Abstract: A rotating cutting tool has a clamping system that positively locks generally square or rectangular carbide cutters into position on the cutter head and extending outwardly from the head for spot facing or boring as the head is rotated. The head has backing supports that are raised above the head end surface for backing and securely holding the carbide inserts to prevent breakage or damage. The clamping system is very rapidly used, and particularly in the case of a spot facer, by having a proper diameter pilot pin member in the center, the carbide cutter inserts can be quickly adjusted for the desired cutting diameter. The unit has no flutes as normally required for high speed or sweated carbide spot facers.

  • Patent number: 4601618
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for locating and drilling pilot holes. Known systems are time-consuming and difficult to carry out and do not reliably result in straight and accurate pilot holes. The invention provides easy and accurate location and drilling and accurate alignment with an initial hole on an inaccessible surface. Clamp jaws (22, 50) are spring loaded into a closed position. Pliers (82) engage jaw (50) and head (64) of a shaft (60) extending through jaw (50) and attached to jaw (22). Pliers (82) are squeezed to move jaw (50) along shaft (60) away from jaw (22). Clamp (22, 50) is placed around a workpiece (10, 8, 15) with a pilot (38) carried by jaw (22) engaging a back surface pilot hole (16). Pliers (82) are released to allow spring (66) on shaft (60) to clamp jaws (22, 50) around workpiece (10, 8, 15). Drill bit (90) is introduced into a bushing (54) in jaw (50).

  • Patent number: 4586408
Abstract: A tool for chamfering the ends of plastic pipe of various diameters comprising a main body having various concentric circular grooves of different diameters which are shaped and sized to receive the square-cut ends of standard size plastic pipe. Each circular groove has an associated cutting blade mounted transversely with respect to the circumference of the pipe in a recess on the outer surface of the main body and positioned so that as the tool is rotated about the square-cut end of a pipe inserted in its correspondingly-sized groove, a chamfer is cut on the outer circular edge of the pipe. During the chamfering process, cuttings cannot enter the pipe because the open end of the pipe is covered by the tool and cuttings leave the tool through the recess. Cutting automatically ceases when the pipe end becomes seated in the groove.

  • Patent number: 4579486
Abstract: A hole saw guide positions a hole saw while forming a new hole either partially overlapping or surrounding an existing hole in a work piece. The hole saw guide includes a disc-shaped body having a pilot drill guide hole through the center sized to guide the pilot drill of a conventional hole saw. Two or more guide arms extend radially outwardly from the body and have outer ends which engage the inner circumference of an existing hole in the work piece to secure the guide at a desired position. The guide arms are adjustable in length radially so the pilot drill guide hole in the body can be positioned where desired. The pilot drill of a conventional hole saw is then inserted into the pilot drill guide hole which properly centers the hole saw so that the new hole formed in the work piece is properly located.

  • Patent number: 4577532
Abstract: A device for automatic advance of a rotating tool towards a workpiece, which includes a rotating tool holder for holding a cutting tool for operation on the workpiece. A gear wheel bears against the rotating tool holder which forces it toward the workpiece. A holder is provided to secure the gear wheel with respect to the workpiece. A device associated with the rotating tool holder engages the gear wheel and rotates it as the tool holder rotates. Associated with the holder and the gear wheel is a mechanism for advancing the gear wheel towards the workpiece as the gear wheel rotates. A stop motion apparatus associated with the gear wheel and the rotating tool holder is included for stopping the rotational movement of the gear wheel. The stop motion apparatus consists of a non-rotatable cam which operates on the cam follower to disengage it from the gear wheel, stopping the rotating movement thereof during a segment of the rotation of the tool holder.

  • Patent number: 4483647
Abstract: An arrangement for performing machining operations at the end faces of pipes includes a tool holder which is equipped with respective tools and is mounted at least for rotation on a carrier. The carrier is mounted on the machine frame for movement normal to the axis of the pipe which is clamped in a clamping device mounted on the machine frame, such that the axis of the pipe extends parallel to the axis of the tool holder. The tool holder has a central passage in which there is guided a spindle having a tapering end portion close to the pipe. A cylinder-and-piston unit pushes the spindle out of the passage and into the interior of the pipe so that the tapering end portion of the spindle becomes coaxially nested in the open end of the pipe, its axis and thus the axis of the tool holder then coinciding with the axis of the inner surface of the pipe. The carrier is then arrested in this working position by a pair of clamping devices, and the spindle is retracted into the passage.

  • Patent number: 4331410
Abstract: The tool includes a mandrel on which is seated and axially held an exchangeable milling cutter, coupled to the mandrel by a clutch drive ring for shell end mill arbors, for transmitting the torque during the milling procedure. In addition, a stop element is mounted on the mandrel, held against an axial displacement, but permitting relative rotation of the mandrel for operating the cutter, whereby particularly a thrust bearing is used between the mandrel and the stop element. The stop element is adjustable and limits the longitudinal movement of the cutter. To prevent any damage to the chamfer-area around the housing-bore hole by the cutter, the stop has to be adjusted accurate to the gauge, in reference to the cutting edge geometry of the cutter teeth, so that just a thin blade of material of the outer ring lip remains. The whole device is centered with the mandrel in the bore of the bearing or bushing which is to be removed after cutting one ring lip.
