    Abstract: A linear broaching machine for machining rotating parts wherein a plurality of tooling carriages are mounted upon a moving chain and broach type tools are supported by the carriages wherein the tools are moved in a linear path into engagement with a rotating workpiece to remove metal from the workpiece and form an accurately sized cylindrical surface concentric to the workpiece axis of rotation. The tool carriages are spaced from each other providing non-machining access durations wherein the workpiece may be loaded or unloaded from its rotating support spindles.

The plate is moved on its support between a first broaching position in a first broaching line and a second broaching position in the second broaching line. The broaching on the first broaching line and the return of the traction and accompanying devices and of the broach to an initial arrangement, on the second broaching line, are performed simultaneously.

    Abstract: A device for machining the crank pins of a crankshaft which are radially offset from the crankshaft axis of rotation. A first master shaft having an axis of rotation and radially offset crank pins corresponding to the crank pins of the crankshaft is rotatably mounted in a housing. A substantially identical master shaft is rotatably mounted to one end of a cradle which has its other end pivotally mounted about the axis of the first master shaft and movable between a first and second position. A girt is rotatably mounted to each of corresponding crank pins on both master shafts so that, as the master shafts are rotatably driven in synchronism with each other and with the crankshaft, cyclical movement is imparted to each girt. A broach is attached to each girt adjacent the crankshaft so that, as the cradle is moved from its first to its second pivotal position, the broach moves tangentially with respect to the crankshaft crank pins and thereby machines the crank pins.

    Abstract: Two vertically movable carriages are alternately reciprocated. Each carriage holds two broaches positioned at opposite sides of the ways that guide the carriage. In one embodiment workpieces are moved from a magazine between the carriages alternately to work stations beside each carriage. In another embodiment the workpieces are moved between the two broaches in a series of three steps, the first broach acting on a given workpiece during a dwell before the first step and the second broach acting on that workpiece during a dwell after the third step. In yet another embodiment the workpieces are held by a chuck which, between successive broaching strokes, rotates the workpiece about an axis normal to the broaching strokes.

    Abstract: A machine for the manufacture of variable ratio racks such as are used in the steering gear of cars, the machine having a plurality of pairs of broaching blades and a holding fixture for holding at least one rack blank so that it can be indexed about a central point of the rack. The machine is arranged so that as either the broach blades are moved past the rack blank or the rack blank is moved past the broach blades pairs of corresponding teeth on each side of the center line are formed simultaneously, the rack blank being indexed to an angle to suit the angle of inclination of a pair of teeth about to be cut to the longitudinal axis of the rack. The machine produces a rack blank in which pairs of teeth of different form and different angular inclination are formed to a shape closely approximating the final shape of the teeth which is achieved by an additional step such as pressing or machining.
