Member Elastically Or Plastically Deformable For Attaching It To Bolt Head Or Nut Patents (Class 411/121)
  • Patent number: 4887949
Abstract: A retention clip cooperates with a bolt and a flange through which the bolt passes to retain the bolt during blind assembly. Opening 28 in flange 26 receives bolt 24. Retention clip 40 is retained with extension 50 in recess 34 by engagement of the clip with the bolt. The clip in turn retains bolt 24 by engaging head 22 with arms 52. Surface 32 is adjacent to flat 60 resisting rotation of the bolt.

  • Patent number: 4790701
Abstract: A fastener assembly for floatingly retaining or captivating at least one fastener is disclosed. The fastener assembly includes a flexible channel member with discrete projections extending from opposed flange portions towards each other and at least one fastener having a base which is captivated between the discrete projections and a web portion of the channel member. The projections extending from at least one flange portion are configured to present a camming surface to a fastener base as it is being inserted into the channel member through the opening between opposed projections to cause the channel member to elastically flex and to move at least one flange portion outwardly to permit the fastener base to be seated in the channel member through the opening. The projections are further configured to present removal of the fastener base from the channel member through the opening as long as the channel member remains unflexed.

  • Patent number: 4772448
Abstract: A support pin system which is a non-welded system for fastening a first structural member, such as a nuclear reactor control rod guide tube flange, to a second structural member, such as nuclear reactor upper core plate, includes a support pin and nut. A first pin portion passes through the first member and has a threaded section which mates with the nut. A second pin portion has a solid body section and a split-leaf base section which biasingly engages a bore in the second member. The solid body section is accommodated by a close clearance fit. The split-leaf base section has an intermediate diameter which is less than the diameter of the solid body section. Thus, loads applied transversely to the system are reacted substantially in pure shear through the solid body section. The nut may be a locking nut having a crimpable cylindrical section integrally connected to an internally threaded section.

  • Patent number: 4759177
Abstract: A shackle safety keeper for keeping the threaded eye bolt of closing a U-shaped shackle from rotation of the eye bolt and ultimate disengagement of the shackle. The shackle safety keeper is a single wire continuously bent to form the disclosed keeper. This wire is bent intermediate its two ends at a bowed spring portion. This bowed spring portion has two depending shackle engagement sections extending downwardly and at right angles from the bowed spring portion. These sections are for clamping to the side edges of the U-shaped shackle adjacent the protruding eye on the shackle bolt. The lower end of each shackle engagement section has protruding angularly outward therefrom two eye reaching legs. These eye reaching legs extend from the bottom of each shackle engaging section out into registry with the eye on the protruding bolt when it has closed the shackle. The two eye reaching legs end the all wire constructed keeper with two opposed and overlapping eye piercing lugs.

  • Patent number: 4683108
Abstract: An apparatus and method for under water remote replacement of the screws which secure together first and second structures in the internal region of a nuclear reactor core, wherein the screws are received and counterbored screw bores in the first structure. First, one or more lateral recesses are machined in the side wall of the counterbore portion. Then an external hex head screw with a shoulder flange is inserted in the screw bore and is threadedly engaged with the second structure with the flange seated in the counterbore portion. A locking cup with a central hex opening is fitted over the hex head of the bolt in the counterbore portion. Then a bifurcated die is seated against the first structure with die fingers extending into the cup, and a drive member is driven through the die coaxially with the screw to move the die fingers against the side wall to deform it into the recesses, thereby locking the assembly in place.

  • Patent number: 4657457
Abstract: A locking device for securing at least two screw-action connectors comprises a locking clip or element made from a good quality spring steel wire having a round or square section. The locking clip or element has a diagonal interconnecting part which extends tangentially between a pair of locking elements one at each end of the part. The locking elements (for example, coils) are wrapped round or placed over a portion of a wheel nut. The interference/friction fit between the wheel nut and the clip or element prevents axial movement of the clip relative to the nut. The part serves as restraining means positively linking tangentially adjacent wheel nuts and thereby prevents relative rotation thereof.

  • Patent number: 4645393
Abstract: A nut retainer for use with a structural member having a nut entrance channel defined between a pair of opposed shoulders or flanges of some predetermined thickness and a nut receiving channel disposed beneath the shoulders. The nut retainer has a generally frusto-conical body constructed from a resiliently deformable polymeric material with the body smaller diameter end fixedly secured to a rectangular nut upper face in a surrounding relationship with a threaded fastener receiving opening. The body larger diameter end is spaced from the nut upper face by some predetermined distance and has a diameter greater than the width of the structural member entrance channel. The retainer body is conformed such that the body exterior side wall will engage the structural member shoulders at areas therealong which are spaced from the nut upper face by a distance which is less than the thickness of the shoulders when the nut is inserted width-wise into the entrance channel.

  • Patent number: 4607422
Abstract: A bonnet is locked to the body of a valve into which the bonnet screws by a sheet metal bonnet lock which includes a portion that will mate with facets on the bonnet or with the sides of the valve body. Another portion of the bonnet lock is then deformed to mate with the other of the bonnet facets or valve body sides. The portion of the bonnet lock that mates with the facets on the bonnet circumscribes the bonnet such that one portion of the bonnet lock is fixed to the bonnet and the other portion is fixed to the valve body following deformation of the bonnet lock to prevent the bonnet from turning relative to the valve body.

Embodiments of a nut retainer assembly and a bolt retainer assembly are disclosed as is an embodiment of a complementary clamping system utilizing a nut retainer assembly and a bolt retainer assembly. In order to facilitate insertion of a fastener through the opening between inturned flange edges of the channel member, at least one of the flats of the base of the fastener includes an inclined portion. Further, in order to facilitate removal of a captivated fastener, at least one of the flats of the base of the fastener includes a cut-out or recessed portion which with the inturned flange edge forms a slot suitable for receiving the tip of a screwdriver.

  • Patent number: 4422236
Abstract: An improved apparatus and a method are disclosed for extruding an improved type of small part of the type having a body portion (12) of extrudable material and a fixture (18, 20; 54, 56) of harder material captured at the surface of the body. A female die element (22, 24) is provided with a bore (26) which extends into a downwardly opening cavity (28) having a geometry corresponding to the desired geometry of the body portion of the part. A male die member (36) is positioned within the bore and includes at its lower end a threaded socket (50) or protrusion (52) for holding the fixture of harder material during extrusion. Thus, when a billet of extrudable material (48) is placed in the cavity and the male die member is moved downward, the material extrudes around a portion of the fixture held at the lower end of the male die element.

  • Patent number: 4346734
Abstract: A locking device to keep two spaced apart positionable heads in place. The disclosed locking device can keep two hex shaped adjustable relief valve heads (34,44) in place. The locking device (10) is punched out of a flat thin sheet metal plate. An elongated opening (12) punched out in the plate has a length (14) which is greater than the furthest separation of the two adjustable heads (34,44). The in flat width (16) of the elongated opening (12) in the sheet metal plate is large enough to fit over the adjustable heads. During use, the plate is bent to decrease the effective width of the opening (12) so that it is smaller than the associated adjustable heads. The locking device (10) is then forced over the two heads (34,44) to engage a flat portion thereof and prevent relative movement.
