  • Patent number: 5348432
Abstract: In order to prevent a flange of a tee nut which is moved along a feed track from overlapping with that of another tee nut so that the tee nut can be smoothly fed along the feed track, the flange is an octagon having linear sides coupling paired the two pawls of each of two pairs of pawls with each other. To firmly and semi-permanently fix the tee nut in an object, a relatively thin-walled flarable or splayable portion is formed on an end of a shaft away from the flange. A female screw forming portion is provided on a portion of the shaft excluding the flarable or splayable portion. When this tee unit is mounted on the object, the pawls bite into the object and the flarable or splayable portion is flared or splayed to form a flared or splayed rim.

  • Patent number: 5302067
Abstract: A prevailing torque fastener has a portion of the internal thread deformed from a circular cross-section to an approximately elliptical cross-section by a pair of die impressions on diametrically opposed sides of the exterior of the body. Each die impression is skewed from a plane normal to the axis of the fastener at an angle corresponding to the lead of the thread. Each die impression is made with a jaw having a central circular arc with a radius greater than the radius of the undeformed fastener. The opening between the jaws has a perimeter equal to the circumference of the undeformed fastener. Each edge of the die impression is at a predetermined elevation relative to the thread profile, preferably aligned with the crest of the thread. The location of the die impression is controlled by threading the fastener against a stop and crimping the fastener between jaws spaced a known distance from the stop.

  • Patent number: 5143499
Abstract: A temperature-sensitive, deformable cylinder locknut for use in high temperature applications associated with the operation of a gas turbine engine provides a secure fastener lock which resists torsional and vibrational stresses which may otherwise act to unseat and disengage the bolt. The locknut includes an undeformed threaded portion, an unthreaded transitional cylindrical sleeve portion, and a deformable unthreaded cylindrical portion. A threaded shaft contacts the cylindrical sleeve with reduced surface engagement to minimize frictional interaction and define a spiral volume therebetween to ensure the establishment of a non-permanent lock.

  • Patent number: 4790703
Abstract: A tri-lobular section of a bolt receives a mating tri-lobular bore of a washer to prevent the washer from rotating. Roll formed male threads on the tri-lobular section of the bolt receive a cooperating nut. The nut has a base shaped for wrench engagement, a thin walled barrel, a spring temper, and a threaded bore. The thread of the nut has two thread diameters: a large diameter thread in the base and a smaller diameter thread in the barrel continuing from the base thread; both thread sections have the same pitch. The barrel thread is substantially circular when relaxed. The barrel elastically flexes in response to the lobes of the nut as the lobes turn in the barrel, and when rotation stops, the barrel generally conforms to the tri-lobular shape of the bolt to form a thread lock, but the base does not.

  • Patent number: 4699552
Abstract: A three piece blind fastener of the kind comprising a tubular nut having a head at one end and a tapered nose at the other end, an expansible sleeve, and a headed bolt threadedly engaged with the nut for forcing the sleeve on to the nose of the nut to form a blind head, has the thread of the nut provided with a locking zone in which the bore of the nut is constricted and, in cross sectional shape, a closed non-reentrant non-circular curve so that the nut resiliently interferes with the bolt.A die, and a method of providing the nut with the locking zone by means of the die are disclosed. The die has a tapered aperture having a cross sectional shape corresponding to the desired shape of the locking zone, and the method involves forcing the tapered nose of the nut into the aperture so as to constrict the bore, in a zone spaced from its ends, to the desired extent and impose the non-circular cross sectional shape on the constricted zone.

  • Patent number: 4291737
Abstract: A tri-lobular, all metal, prevailing torque nut is disclosed providing a cone having three locking sections, each of which extends around the threaded opening for about one-third of the surface of its thread. Each locking section provides a minimum radial distance at its center and extends with gradually increasing radial distance to the ends thereof. When the nut is threaded onto a mating threaded fastener, portions of each locking section are radially displaced from their unstressed condition to the circular shape of the mating fastener, producing frictional engagement between the nut and the fastener to resist unintentional loosening. Each locking section is arranged so that it provides a maximum resistance to deflection at its center and decreasing resistance to deflection at locations progressively spaced from the center so that excessive pressures are not developed which would tend to produce excessive wear or permanent deformation.
