Patent number: 10562158Abstract: A threaded fastener, inserted into a hole in materials to be joined, receives a free-running collar (nut) with out-of-round duplex barrels. Spring-loaded twin sockets cradle the barrels and a restraining polygon key extends through the sockets and into a recess in the small face on the pin tail. Installation advances in tandem sequence; tightening before swaging. A machined groove with flat bottom and side rising at about 20 degrees from axial forms a boundary and partly reshapes crests from parallel to angular. Such inclination keeps the collar connected to the cavity of the larger of twin sockets throughout tangential tightening, rise of torque, displacement of crest material, recoil of the smaller socket on the end barrel, cessation of collar rotation and plunging torque. When recoil ends, radial torque on the smaller socket crushes and locks barrel material into underlying left hand helical troughs that interrupt the last few pin threads.Type: GrantFiled: June 28, 2017Date of Patent: February 18, 2020Inventor: Lloyd S. Patent number: 6386808Abstract: It is an object of the invention to provide a structure of an internal thread portion for preventing looseness which structure allows a reduction in the torque required for the threaded engagement with an external-thread member and prevents a seizure. An exit end portion of a self-locking nut is taperingly contracted over the entire circumference thereof so as to form a contracted internal thread portion having a conical section. In addition, ridges of the contracted internal thread portion are provided with corrugation continuing circumferentially. The diameter of an inscribed circle which links the extremities of projections in the corrugation is smaller than the minor diameter of the external-thread member which is to be engaged threadedly with the internal thread portion.Type: GrantFiled: September 27, 2001Date of Patent: May 14, 2002Assignee: Sugiura Seisakusho Co., Ltd.Inventors: Naoyuki Fujii, Keiji Nomura

Patent number: 5692419Abstract: An improved deformable locking fastener system comprises a fastener, a deformable collar and a dedicated installation tool. The fastener has a threaded exterior defining a plurality of axial flutes which are configured to prevent the collar from prematurely capturing the fastener during installation. The collar comprises a cylindrical forward portion, a central portion having an elliptical cross-sectional shape and a rearward portion having an elliptical cross-sectional shape. The collar portions have axial heights selected to maximize the strength of the collar and to minimize the weight of the collar. The installation tool contacts the collar along driving ridges which reduces the radial compression of the collar and increases the tangential driving force turning the collar during installation.Type: GrantFiled: June 7, 1995Date of Patent: December 2, 1997Assignee: Air Industries CorporationInventor: Lloyd S. Patent number: 5302067Abstract: A prevailing torque fastener has a portion of the internal thread deformed from a circular cross-section to an approximately elliptical cross-section by a pair of die impressions on diametrically opposed sides of the exterior of the body. Each die impression is skewed from a plane normal to the axis of the fastener at an angle corresponding to the lead of the thread. Each die impression is made with a jaw having a central circular arc with a radius greater than the radius of the undeformed fastener. The opening between the jaws has a perimeter equal to the circumference of the undeformed fastener. Each edge of the die impression is at a predetermined elevation relative to the thread profile, preferably aligned with the crest of the thread. The location of the die impression is controlled by threading the fastener against a stop and crimping the fastener between jaws spaced a known distance from the stop.Type: GrantFiled: March 5, 1993Date of Patent: April 12, 1994Inventor: Jack Rath

Patent number: 5148727Abstract: An installation tool for use with locking fasteners which reduces cam off during use. The tool comprises a cylindrical socket wrench having a central axial bore which defines a recess on one end for attachment to a socket driver and an elliptical cavity on the opposite end for engaging the collar of the locking fastener. The installation tool further comprises one or more pockets positioned on the wrenching portion of the cavity. The pockets provide space in which collar mass is deformed. As the collar is deformed to lock the collar and bolt together, collar mass is deformed into the pockets on the tool. The deformed collar mass retains the tool and collar in an engaged position until the collar is completely deformed and the fastener is locked.Type: GrantFiled: February 12, 1990Date of Patent: September 22, 1992Assignee: Air Industries CorporationInventor: Herman L. Patent number: 4784549Abstract: Axially-extending troughs in a bark of an internally-threaded collar receive setting balls of a driver that apply a torque to the collar through the balls bearing on the walls of the troughs. At a predetermined pre-load, the balls fail the bark and plow through it to develop circumferential furrows, and the torque application on the collar ends. A second torquing with balls at a different axial position fails the bark again at the same pre-load to compensate for any relaxation after the first torque application.Type: GrantFiled: November 16, 1987Date of Patent: November 15, 1988Inventor: George S. Patent number: 4544312Abstract: A threaded pin has flutes along the threads formed by roll-forming threads over a preformed section having either flat sides or dished sides. The major diameter of the threads lies along ridge crests bordering the flutes, and the minor diameter of the threads lies at the base of the flutes. The threads extend along the major diameter in each of the ridge crests for a distance on an order of magnitude of the distance across the mouth of each flute. The preformed section is formed by extrusion. The flutes provide space for material from a threaded collar forced into them to provide a thread lock.Type: GrantFiled: December 24, 1984Date of Patent: October 1, 1985Assignee: VSI CorporationInventor: Edgar L. Patent number: 4408936Abstract: A torque limited threaded locking fastener and a method for setting it to form an assembly. The fastener comprises an externally threaded shank and an internally threaded collar. At least one convolution of the threads on the shank is non-circular. The collar has a nut section and a drive section. The drive section is shaped to be engaged by a driver. Between these sections there is formed a shear section having the least torque resistance of the sections. The shear section fractures when a predetermined torque is exerted between the two sections. The nut section has an internal thread engageable to the shank thread, and an external rib engageable by a swaging tool. The swaging tool radially inwardly deforms and displaces the rib so as to displace nut section material at the non-circular convolution whereby to lock the nut to the shank after, but only after, the drive section is torqued off.Type: GrantFiled: January 15, 1981Date of Patent: October 11, 1983Assignee: Hi-Shear CorporationInventor: Herman L. Patent number: 4260005Abstract: A collar threads onto a shear pin. When the collar engages a surface of a workpiece, resistance to further threading increases. When sufficient resistance to threading occurs, a setting driver upsets lobes of the collar and forces these lobes radially inward toward the axis of the collar. Material of the collar inside the lobes responds to deformation of the lobes and flows radially inward against the shear pin to lock the collar, shear pin and workpiece together. The driver then rotates freely and a joint has been made with a predetermined clamp-up load and its component parts locked together.Type: GrantFiled: November 9, 1977Date of Patent: April 7, 1981Assignee: VSI CorporationInventor: Edgar L.
