Patent number: 5411288Abstract: A door assembly (10) for an inflatable vehicle occupant restraint module (14) includes two doors (80, 100) which are pivotally mounted for movement between a closed position and an open position. The doors (80, 100) cover an opening (28) through which an inflatable air bag (22) deploys. Each door (80, 100) has at least one finger portion (120, 140, 152, 154) which overlaps the other door when the doors are in the closed position. The overlapping finger portions (120, 140, 152, 154) prevent inward pivoting movement of the doors (80, 100). A retainer assembly (200) holds the doors (80, 100) in the closed position and releases the doors to pivot outward upon inflation of the air bag (22). The retainer assembly (200) includes a frangible member (224) which ruptures.Type: GrantFiled: November 3, 1993Date of Patent: May 2, 1995Assignee: TRW Vehicle Safety Systems Inc.Inventor: Charles E. Patent number: 5178500Abstract: A fastener and method for fastening panels is disclosed. The fastener comprises a bolt and a nut with a locking feature to prevent loosening of the fastener from vibration after it has been set. The locking feature comprises a frustoconical tip on the inserted end of the bolt that engages a retainer ring in the nut. When setting the fastener, the retainer ring deforms around the outer end of the tip and slides down the narrowing frustoconical surface of the tip until the fastener is fully set. Unthreading of the bolt from the nut is prevented since the retainer ring will resist deformation along the increasingly larger diameter portions of the frustoconical tip. In another aspect of the invention, the nut is provided with shear tabs which engage a wrenching tool. These tabs are designed to shear when the fastener is fully set to prevent further application of torque by the tool.Type: GrantFiled: April 24, 1991Date of Patent: January 12, 1993Assignee: Mag Aerospace Industries, Inc.Inventor: Edgar L.
