  • Patent number: 5186591
Abstract: An improved temporary support pin which may be pushed into place rather than screwed into place and used with either English or metric threads. Resilient arms protruding from the support pin are depressed when a workpiece is pushed over them, and spring back into place to support the workpiece and allow a mechanic to have both hands free for replacing screws which attach the workpiece to its permanent mounting. The embodiment further includes a non-circular cross-section at the end gripped by the mechanic, to permit easy gripping, insertion, turning, and removal of the pin. The improved pin is preferably manufactured in one-step molding, significantly reducing the cost of its manufacture.

  • Patent number: 5064325
Abstract: A thumbnut for use with a convex surface is provided with a plastic sheath in which the bottom face thereof has a series of projections arranged in a circumferential manner like the numerals on a clock face. Once the thumbnut is threadedly engaged with a bolt extending from the convex surface, these projections react in a ratchet-like manner with that surface. As the thumb nut is tightened the projections cause it to move alternatively from unstable "override" positions to stable "straddle" positions which effectively lock the thumbnut with respect to the convex surface, regardless of the amount of torque applied to the thumbnut.

  • Patent number: 5000222
Abstract: A pressure adjustment screw for a fluid flow control device cannot for safety's sake be rotated within a threaded cylindrical bore on the device's body to withdraw it beyond an extreme pressure level safety setting. To allow field adjustment of the set point pressure and at the same time to prevent withdrawal of the adjustment screw beyond the extreme pressure level safety setting, a stop collar is fixed within the cylindrical bore in a position contacting the adjustment screw when the adjustment screw is in its extreme pressure level safety setting. The invention includes a number of means for fixing the stop collar in this position, as do methods for fixing the stop collar in this position.

  • Patent number: 5000636
Abstract: The method of making a friction locking fastener of the type having in the thread grooves a first deposit formed of a mixture of an uncured epoxy resin and a radiation-curable, film-forming material, and a second deposit of a fluid curing agent and a radiation-curable, film-forming material. The deposits are made in the thread grooves at circumferentially spaced locations so that a very thin coating of the radiation-curable, film-forming material develops at the surface of each deposit. The deposits are subjected to high intensity ultraviolet radiation for a few seconds to transform the coatings developed on the surfaces of the deposits into thin, continuous, flexible, non-tacky protective films which cover the still fluid deposits in the thread grooves of the article. Alternatively, when one or both the resin and curing agent are micro-encapsulated. They may be contained in a single mixture which includes the radiation-curable material.

  • Patent number: 4790703
Abstract: A tri-lobular section of a bolt receives a mating tri-lobular bore of a washer to prevent the washer from rotating. Roll formed male threads on the tri-lobular section of the bolt receive a cooperating nut. The nut has a base shaped for wrench engagement, a thin walled barrel, a spring temper, and a threaded bore. The thread of the nut has two thread diameters: a large diameter thread in the base and a smaller diameter thread in the barrel continuing from the base thread; both thread sections have the same pitch. The barrel thread is substantially circular when relaxed. The barrel elastically flexes in response to the lobes of the nut as the lobes turn in the barrel, and when rotation stops, the barrel generally conforms to the tri-lobular shape of the bolt to form a thread lock, but the base does not.

  • Patent number: 4750851
Abstract: A self-aligning pivot bolt for mounting a belt tensioner idler pulley on a base member in which the bolt is formed with upper and lower cylindrical pilot sections separated by an intermediate threaded section. The base member has a bolt receiving opening formed with upper and lower inwardly tapered sections. The bolt and opening are dimensioned so that a lead thread of the threaded section engages an upper portion of the lower tapered section prior to the pilot sections engaging the respective tapered sections of the opening. After partial engagement of the threaded section the lower pilot section begins engagement with the lower tapered section to axially align the bolt within the hole followed by engagement of the upper pilot section with the upper tapered section. The softer metal of the base member flows into the root areas of the bolt threads to trap the bolt in the opening of the base member.
