  • Patent number: 5472302
Abstract: A bolt includes a movable pin in the center thereof. This pin can freely move up and down in the bolt. If the pin protrudes out of bolt a predetermined distance after the bolt is screwed into a blind bolt hole, then an inspector knows that the bolt is fully engaged. If, on the other hand, the bolt is not fully engaged, the pin will not protrude the predetermined distance out of the bolt. A second embodiment of the similar invention is a stud having an indicator pin. In third and fourth embodiments, the bolts and studs have indicator pins including grease zerks. These grease zerks allow the holes to be filled with grease to prevent damage to the hole due to corrosion.

  • Patent number: 5460875
Abstract: This invention allows to form a nitrided hard layer on the surface of an austenitic stainless steel screw by forming a nitrided layer thereon and to prevent causing rust on some parts such as a screw head portion which is in contact with the outside air by removing the nitrided hard layer to expose austenitic stainless steel base which has sufficient corrosion resistance. On the contrary, in a thread part and the like of the screw, the nitrided hard layer is left and to thereby improves hardness and the like to strengthen tapping functions and the like of the screw. In the method for manufacturing the austenitic stainless steel screw according to the invention, the austenitic stainless steel screw is held in a fluorine- or fluoride-containing gas atmosphere prior to nitriding to form a fluorided film on its surface and then is nitrided in that state. Accordingly, so formed nitrided hard layer becomes uniform and deep to obtain an austenitic stainless steel screw having excellent surface properties.

  • Patent number: 5447399
Abstract: A bolt, rivet or similar fastener for fastening separate structural parts has a shank, and a tubular cover member covering at least part of the periphery of the shank for preventing a stress from concentrating in part of the shank. The cover member is made of a material having greater deformability or greater elastic strain energy than the material constituting the shank or is made of a material having a relatively small coefficient of friction. When vibration or impact acts on the fastener, the cover member disperses the resulting stress to protect the shank against breakage.

Abstract: A fastener assembly for anchoring masonry to a wall support stud includes a sealing member releasably seated in a retaining groove. The fastener threads into the support stud and is affixed to a hole in the masonry with a bonding agent. The retaining groove holds the sealing member in place during the installation of the fastener, and a break-off groove enables the fastener to be severed inside the masonry. After the fastener has been severed, the sealing member can be relocated inside the masonry to a pre-determined sealing position, thereby insuring the use of a controlled volume of bonding agent.

  • Patent number: 5413443
Abstract: In a unit for mounting a primary insulator for power lines onto a pin, a threaded element has an inner diameter which decreases along the length of the threaded element from its top to bottom. The threaded element surrounds a portion of the pin, forming a gap defined by the outer peripheral surface of the pin and the inner diameter of the threaded element. An adhesive resinous material, such as epoxy, is permitted to cure within the gap and forms a strong bond with the pin, which may be metal or fiberglass. An interference fit, or interlock, is formed between the threaded element and the adhesive resinous material. The threaded element may be plastic, and a lubricating powder may be dispersed throughout the threaded element.

The tail end of the mandrel is engaged by a pulling tool that can be manually or power actuated to pull the interference fit shank into the structure workpiece to produce a fatigue resistant interference between the pin shank diameter and the workpiece hole diameter.

  • Patent number: 5072785
Abstract: Disclosed is a bolt assembly which includes two spacers having cooling channels defined therein which communicate with a central bore, and a bolt which extends through the bore of each spacer. The diameter of the shaft of the bolt is significantly less than either of the spacer bore diameters, allowing coolant entering the cooling channels of one spacer to circulate through the spacer bores and out the cooling channels of the other spacer, thereby cooling the bolt.

  • Patent number: 5018920
Abstract: In this fastening system two or more layers of material are fastened together by inserting a hollow sleeved fastener such as a rivet or a bolt into the hole in a high interference fit to expand the hole radially. The sleeve is configured either as a collar and a straight shank or as an angled upper portion combined with a shank for counterbored applications. The intersections between either the collar and the shank or the angle portion and the staight shank are designed with an enlarged radius such that when the sleeve is expanded after the insertion of the fastener inside of it, this radius is expanded, which in turn stress coins the adjacent edge of the hole in the layers. This localized stress coining as well as the hoop stress in the hole surrounding the hole dramatically increases the fatigue strength of the fastened layers in a structure assembly.
