  • Patent number: 5370484
Abstract: In a push rivet consisting of a grommet part and a pin part so that two panel members may be joined together first by passing the grommet part through an opening passed through these panel members, and forcing the pin part into a central bore of the grommet part to radially expand the free end of the grommet part, because the head of the pin part is provided with an outer profile which conforms to an outer profile of a part of the flange surrounding the pin head when the pin part is completely forced into the central bore, the fastener presents a smooth appearance which is pleasing to the eyes, and the pin part is prevented from being inadvertently pulled out of the grommet part even when an external object is struck against the pin head. However, a gap is defined between the pin head and the surrounding part of the grommet part so that the push rivet can be readily unfastened by fitting a pointed end of a tool into the gap, and pulling the pin part out of the central bore by using the tool as a lever.

  • Patent number: 4856950
Abstract: A re-usable plastic drive rivet is of the type comprising an axially extending shank in association with an axially extending drive pin which is axially drivable into a bore extending axially through the shank. In order to permit release of the entire drive rivet by means of an unscrewing operation, without damaging the workpieces to which the drive rivet is secured, the outer surface of the shank has a thread formation thereon with the outer surface of the drive pin having a non-cylindrical outline complementary to a similar non-cylindrical peripheral outline of the interior wall of the bore. The non-cylindrical outlines can be substantially cylindrical apart from inter-engagable axial ribs and grooves. The shank can be integrally formed with the drive pin through means of frangible connections, but alternatively the shank can be preassembled with the drive pin by inserting the drive pin into the bore through the shank.

  • Patent number: 4830556
Abstract: A two piece rivet having a deflectable drive pin for retaining the drive pin in a partially inserted position between the expandable prongs of the rivet is disclosed. The deflectable drive pin includes a hole forming two parallel resiliently deflectable segments each having a radial nib resiliently urged against the head of the rivet in a central drive pin hole. Retention of the drive pin in the fully inserted position between the prongs is effected by a pair of spaced apart circumferential interrupted grooves on the pin receiving projections on inner surfaces of the rivet prongs.

  • Patent number: 4804303
Abstract: An attachment block structure for connection through a preformed opening in a first workpiece to provide a fastener receiving surface to permit attachment of a second workpiece to the first workpiece comprises a first plastic member having a plurality of resilient legs depending from a radially extending flange. Latch elements are carried by the legs for retaining the first member in the preformed opening. The flange has a central passageway and a radial extent greater than the preformed opening to define a limit for movement of the first member into the preformed opening. A second plastic member is associated with the first member and has a body with an exterior surface sized to be closely received in the passageway of the first member to prevent radially inward deflection of the legs when the second member is inserted in the passageway.

  • Patent number: 4741548
Abstract: A bicycle chain hanger comprises a unitary member molded from a polymeric material and including a disc-like base portion having a concavely curved internal surface adapted to bear against the wall of the seat stay and a generally L-shaped hook portion extending outwardly from the base portion and adapted to accept and hold an element of the chain in hooked relation. Two pins, driven with a force fit through each of two holes and through corresponding split sleeves that extend through holes in the seat stay tube into the space within the tube walls, deflect portions of the split sleeve out into interfering relation with the walls and edges of the tube holes and thereby retain the member on the seat stay.

  • Patent number: 4648766
Abstract: A protective/decorative liner panel is mounted on a sheet metal support panel by molded plastic fasteners which allow the liner panel to be subsequently detached and reattached. Each fastener comprises a pin which is initially joined to a hollow grommet by a frangible web which aligns the pin shank with a bore in the grommet. The pin head is manually and twistably engageable with an installation hole in the liner panel and then the grommet is axially engaged with an installation hole in the support panel as the liner panel is moved toward the support panel. A hammer blow on the pin head fractures the web, forces the pin shank into the bore and moves the liner panel to its mounted position relative to the support panel. Serrations on the pin shank frictionally engage the bore wall to hold the pin and its attached liner panel in mounted position.

The leg member of the rivet body is provided with a movable leg which is deflected outward when the pin is inserted into the through-hole of the rivet body so as, for example, to catch and hold a pair of plates through which the rivet body has been passed between the head of the rivet body and the deflected movable leg. Pushing the pin further into the rivet body causes the deflected movable leg to return to its normal position, whereby the fastening action of the rivet is released.
