  • Patent number: 4571134
Abstract: In a two-piece plastic fastener, initially molded as a unit, one piece is a grommet having a head with a flat front surface and forwardly projecting legs defining a sidewardly and forwardly opening slot; the other piece is a pin receivable through the head and forwardly slidable in the slot to an operative position holding the front ends of the legs flexingly diverged. As molded, a front end portion of the pin is connected with the head by a frangible flashing. A forwardly opening radially extending groove in the front of the head, opening from one side of the slot, defines a substantially flat forwardly facing groove surface that is rearwardly offset from and parallel to the front surface of the head and is flush with the front end surface of the pin. Cooperating ridges on the grommet legs and the pin confine the latter to lengthwise motion between the legs.

  • Patent number: 4488843
Abstract: A fastener is disclosed which is installed quickly and easily the first time by simply driving a frangible drive pin. The drive pin has ribs which cooperate with grooves in an axially extending bore in the fastener body to limit distortion of the fastener due to rotational stresses imparted thereto by a tool engaging the head of the fastener. Subsequent to the initial installation of the fastener by the driving of the frangible drive pin the fastener is reusable in the same manner as a conventional threaded fastener.

  • Patent number: 4483649
Abstract: A blind hole anchor nut fastener comprises a tubular sleeve and a screw-threaded nut at the end of the sleeve, so that when a screw-threaded mandrel is screw-engaged with the nut, and is displaced axially in the appropriate direction, the nut can shear from the sleeve and be drawn into the sleeve in wedging engagement. The basic nut shape is modified by making it non-circular such as trochoidal (for example) at one end and in so-doing making parts of the surface back-tapered so that in the displacement into the sleeve the non-circular shape helps in anti-rotational hold relative to the sleeve and the reduced volume resulting from the back-taper minimizes actual extension of the sleeve under the wedging action so as to reduce the possibility of the sleeve splitting.

  • Patent number: 4405272
Abstract: The fastener of the invention has a sleeve-like body with a laterally enlarged head at a rear end thereof, a fixed diameter rear portion forwardly adjacent to the head, and at least three forwardly opening longitudinal slots defining as many forwardly projecting legs. A plunger insertable into the body to a forward operative position holds the front ends of the legs flexingly diverged to confine the fastener in a blind hole. At its front end each leg has a radial protuberance with a flat rear surface, the rear surfaces of the protuberances being coplanar and normal to the body axis when the legs are diverged. A rearwardly facing circumferential shoulder on the plunger is engaged by detent lugs in the body, near the rear ends of the slots, to define a preliminarily assembled position of the plunger and is detentingly engaged by forwardly facing surfaces on the legs, near their front ends, in the operative position of the plunger.

  • Patent number: 4391559
Abstract: A plastic fastener comprises a female member provided with a flange, a leg extended from the flange and an insertion hole bored longitudinally along the axis of the leg, and a male member provided with a head portion and a shaft portion extended from the head portion and adapted to be inserted into the insertion hole of the female member, whereby panels are brought into tight union. The female member and the male member are provided on the upper surface of the flange and on the lower surface of the head portion respectively with cam faces which are inclined in the circumferential direction around the common axis of the two members and matched so that these are brought into intimate contact at the time of the forced driving of the male member into the female member and, at the time of release of the tight union of the panels, caused to slide on each other by a rotation given to the male member to thereby cause the head portion to be lifted from the upper surface of the flange.

  • Patent number: 4375342
Abstract: A two-piece plastic fastener has a sleeve-like body comprising forwardly projecting flexible legs and having a concentric radially enlarged head at its rear end. Longitudinal slots in the body define the legs and space them apart laterally. A cylindrical plunger, forwardly insertable in the body to an operative position at which it holds the legs forwardly diverged, has two radially outwardly opening circumferential grooves, one near its front end, the other near its rear end. At the rear end of each slot in the body is a detent lug that has its rear end integrally connected with the body to have its front end flexible radially outwardly. These lugs detent-wise engage in the front groove to define a projecting position of the plunger and in the rear groove to define its operative position. Lugs and grooves are so configured as to offer more resistance to rearward than to forward plunger displacement.

  • Patent number: 4371300
Abstract: An insert for installation in a hole therefor in parent member comprises a body having an exterior increase in diameter between larger and smaller diameter ends and a ferrule adapted to be axially driven about the exterior of the body when the latter is end located by its larger diameter end in a hole therefor in parent material whereby the ferrule is expanded as a result of co-action with the body. The ferrule is annularly grooved to provide one or more forwardly directed portions therefrom shown of forwardly and outwardly inclined taper form at or adjacent the leading end of the ferrule and having a thin section connection therewith at the annular groove or grooves so that on axial co-action of the ferrule with the body the forwardly directed portion or portions effect radial expansion of the ferrule into taper engagement with the wall of the hole in order to lock the ferrule and body in the hole with a taper locking action against axial pull out.

  • Patent number: 4307986
Abstract: An insert for installation in a hole therefor in parent material comprises a ferrule which is longitudinally serrated externally so as to provide cutting teeth at its leading end and initially has a thin section connection at the leading end co-axially with a smaller diameter end of a body member of exterior taper form whereby on the body member being positioned for end location by its larger diameter end in a hole therefor and axial force is applied to the free other end of the ferrule, the thin section connection is first broken and the ferrule is then axially driven over the exterior taper form of the body member and expanded thereby to cause the cutting teeth at the leading end of the ferrule to shear material from the wall of the hole to a corresponding taper form and so lock the ferrule and body member in the hole against axial pull out.
