Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention relate generally to certain types of reciprocating positive-displacement pumps (which may be referred to hereinafter as “pods,” “pump pods,” or “pod pumps”) used to pump fluids, such as a biological fluid (e.g., blood or peritoneal fluid), a therapeutic fluid (e.g., a medication solution), or a surfactant fluid. The pumps may be configured specifically to impart low shear forces and low turbulence on the fluid as the fluid is pumped from an inlet to an outlet. Such pumps may be particularly useful in pumping fluids that may be damaged by such shear forces (e.g., blood, and particularly heated blood, which is prone to hemolysis) or turbulence (e.g., surfectants or other fluids that may foam or otherwise be damaged or become unstable in the presence of turbulence).

  • Publication number: 20130243631
Abstract: A displacement pump comprising a pump assembly and a cassette assembly. The pump assembly includes upper and lower housing portions that define a cavity, an arm disposed in the cavity, a roller attached to the distal end of the arm, and a motor attached to the proximal end of the arm for rotating the arm. The cassette assembly is removably disposed in the cavity and comprises upper and lower cassette housing portions that form an annular compression surface with a channel therein. A hollow compression tube having a flange extending along a length thereof is secured to the compression surface by the flange being engaged with the channel. As the motor rotates the roller arm, the roller presses the compression tube against the compression surface to create a moving occlusion of the compression tube for pushing fluid through the compression tube.

Abstract: A cassette for use with an ophthalmic surgical pump for collecting aspirant fluid and tissue from a patient's eye includes a rigid walled container having an interior volume. At least one tapered alignment slot is formed in a side wall of the container and extends from a back wall towards a front wall. An irrigation and aspiration manifold base is removeably attached to the container. An aspiration path is formed within the container for receiving the aspiration fluid and the tissue from the eye and directing the flow of fluid towards a front half of the container before the fluid and tissue collects within a majority of the interior volume of the container. A fluid level indicator is formed on a wall of the container, such that an associated photo-detector of the pump may determine a level of fluid in the container.

  • Patent number: 8500421
Abstract: Embodiments to the present invention provide a peristaltic pump. This peristaltic pump includes a flexible flow path, an exterior casing, an elastomeric member, and a number of rollers driven by a motor. The exterior casing and elastomeric member have a first and second annular recess, respectively. An annular flow path guide is formed when the exterior casing and elastomeric member are mechanically coupled. Rollers move along the annular flow path to compress and release the flexible flow path and in so doing draw fluid through the flexible flow patch to achieve pumping action. Mechanical guides proximate to the first annular recess and second annular recess prevent relative motion between the first annular recess and second annular recess ensuring that the flexible flow path remains in place.

  • Patent number: 8496609
Abstract: A fluid dispensing machine, such as a peritoneal dialysis or hemodialysis machine, includes a dispenser or cassette that pumps a medical fluid for dialysis or other treatments for patients. The machine includes and uses an autoconnect device for connecting containers of liquid, such as bags of dialysis fluid or medication fluids, to the machine, while maintaining the sterility of the connection. The autoconnect device removes the cap from the fluid bag and pierces a sealing membrane on tubing from the bag. This makes it easier for patients to receive treatment, especially home treatment. The cassettes preferably have tubing ports with integral spikes for piercing the membrane on tubing from bags of liquids. The ports may be staggered for sequential engagement with the spikes. Other embodiments are useful for dispensing other liquids from other types of dispensing or pumping machines.
