Abstract: A surface which carries a material which is infected with prions is cleaned with an alkaline cleaning solution to remove as much proteinaceous material as possible from the surface. The solution contains an alkaline cleaning agent which attacks prions remaining on the surface and which attacks prions removed from the surface during the cleaning step. After the cleaning step, the surface is exposed to a strong gaseous oxidant, preferably hydrogen peroxide vapor. The hydrogen peroxide or other strong oxidant attacks the prions, particularly the unclumped prion strands, deactivating the prions.

Abstract: A lamp assembly comprising one or more lamp clusters. Each lamp cluster comprises one or more electrodeless UV lamps which are excited by microwaves emitted from a microwave generator. The microwave generator and power supply are enclosed within a housing that is integral with the lamp clusters. The lamp clusters are wholly surrounded by a waveguide. The waveguide, comprising a flange and a distal end cap connected by a mesh, forms an enclosure. The waveguide is essentially UV transparent to allow UV light to pass through but effectively opaque to microwaves in order to substantially contain the microwaves within the waveguide enclosure.

Abstract: Mounted on an upper surface of a container main body are a base of a water level indicator detecting a remaining amount of liquid reducing agent, a base of a densitometer detecting concentration of liquid reducing agent, a heat exchanger surrounding detectors of the water level indicator and the densitometer, and circulating engine coolant for heat exchange between liquid reducing agent and engine coolant, and a suction tube for sucking liquid reducing agent from a position adjacent to the bottom of container main body and between water level indicator and densitometer. A box-shaped protector surrounds the water level indicator, densitometer and suction tube which are located in a region adjacent to a lower portion of the heat exchanger. Heat from the heat exchanger is trapped in the protector to generate convection in that region, thereby unfreezing frozen liquid reducing agent around the water level indicator, densitometer and suction tube.

  • Patent number: 7722839
Abstract: An apparatus and method are provided to rapidly thaw and heat frozen bags of biological materials, such as plasma. The apparatus has a hollow bladder having a flexible wall that is placed in contact with the bag. A circulation system draws fluid from a reservoir and fills the bladder with the fluid. The circulation system also drains fluid from the bladder. A heater in the reservoir heats the fluid before the fluid enters the bladder. As heated fluid flows through the bladder, heat is transferred through the bladder wall to the plasma bag to thaw the biological material. The bladder wall expands against the plasma bag as the bladder fills with fluid, and contracts from the plasma bag as the bladder is drained. The expansion and contraction of the bladder wall agitates the plasma bag and biological material to accelerate the thawing process.
