Patent number: 8491854Abstract: A test tube insert includes a flange having a width greater than a width of a mouth of a larger test tube into which the insert is to be inserted. The flange defines a first central opening. An annulus extends integrally downward from the flange. The annulus includes a fenestrated wall and a floor defining a second central opening. A small test tube body, smaller than the larger test tube, extends integrally downward from the floor of the annulus with the second central opening forming a mouth of the small test tube body. The test tube insert is disposed in the mouth of the larger test tube. Fluid is transferred through the central opening and the fluid fills the small test tube body of the test tube insert and flows through the fenestrated wall once the small test tube body is full into the larger test tube.Type: GrantFiled: November 8, 2010Date of Patent: July 23, 2013Assignee: King Saud UniversityInventor: Abdullah Khalid Al-Rasheed

Patent number: 8298498Abstract: An apparatus and method of loading reagent in a specimen handling device is disclosed, where the apparatus includes a deck with a plurality of positions defined thereon and each of the positions visually marked by a distinct one of a first set of icons. Each of a plurality of trays is removably securable to a selected one of the positions on the deck and includes the distinct one of the first set of icons visually marking the selected one of the positions. Reagent receptacles on each of the plurality of trays are visually marked by a distinct one of a second set of icons, and a kit is provided with a plurality of containers with selected reagents therein, each of the containers being visually marked by the distinct one of the second set of icons visually marking the receptacle into which that reagent is to be poured. The fluids including specimen samples and reagents are moved between tubes during processing without directly passing over tubes which the reagents could contaminate.Type: GrantFiled: July 21, 2006Date of Patent: October 30, 2012Assignee: Abbott LaboratoriesInventors: Scott Safar, Stephen Herchenbach

Patent number: 8216530Abstract: A reagent tube configured with a stellated shaped pattern, on its bottom interior surface, configured to facilitate complete or near-complete withdrawal of fluid from the tube, via a pipette tip. The reagent tube may be used for transporting reagents and for carrying out processing operations on biological samples with the reagents, such as preparing polynucleotides extracted from the sample for amplification.Type: GrantFiled: October 14, 2010Date of Patent: July 10, 2012Assignee: HandyLab, Inc.Inventors: Kalyan Handique, Theodore Springer

Patent number: 7392949Abstract: A barcode reading apparatus provided in a transfer mechanism to transfer intermittently a test tube holder holding a test tube with a barcode on periphery, comprises a barcode reader which reads a barcode of the test tube during halt of intermittent transfer by the transfer mechanism, and a rotating mechanism which holds sides of the test tube, and rotates the test tube to face the barcode to the barcode reader during the halt of intermittent transfer.Type: GrantFiled: April 4, 2005Date of Patent: July 1, 2008Inventor: Teruaki Itoh

Patent number: 6890759Abstract: A system and method for identifying a biological sample associated with a container is disclosed. A universally unique-identifier is associated with each container. In one or more embodiments, the identifier comprises one or more markings having a specular reflectance which differs from the specular reflectance of the outer surface of the container adjacent the markings. A detection apparatus detects the differences in specularly reflected light to identify the identifier associated with the container. The identifier is associated with certain information regarding the container and biological sample. From that point forward, any information about the contents of the container may be retrieved by searching on its container ID. Because the container ID is assured by its manufacturer to be universally-unique, the container and sample may move from one organization to another under the same identifier, and information about the contents of the container may be shared by querying on its container ID.Type: GrantFiled: December 30, 1998Date of Patent: May 10, 2005Assignee: Becton, Dickinson and CompanyInventors: Pierre Bierre, Sreedhar Payavala

Patent number: 6663836Abstract: A method of uniquely identifying a plurality of discrete test tubes. The method includes providing a rack having an array of wells located at the intersections of mutually perpendicular columns and rows. The rack is marked to orient the rack from top to bottom and left to right. Each well is identifiable by reference to a sequence of letters and numbers identifying its respective intersecting column and row. A plurality of test tubes are positioned in the wells. The test tubes have open tops and closed lower ends protruding through the open bottoms of the wells. Indicia are applied to the respective closed lower ends of the test tubes positioned in the wells. The application of the indicia is performed in situ and simultaneously as a single step to all of the test tubes in the wells, thereby resulting in each test tube being uniquely identified with reference to its respective well.Type: GrantFiled: January 8, 2001Date of Patent: December 16, 2003Assignee: Matrix Technologies CorporationInventors: George P. Patent number: 6372293Abstract: A test tube comprises a tube body of unitary construction including an enclosed sidewall and an integral bottom that together define a tubular container having an open top. The bottom has a concave interior surface and a planar exterior surface upon which machine readable data is encoded within a multi-layered opaque coating that is deposited onto the planar exterior surface to uniquely identify the test tube. The machine readable data is preferably an open (i.e., non-proprietary) data matrix code. This code is applied to the test tube by depositing a multi-layer coating onto the planar exterior of the tube bottom. The multi-layer coating may include a first layer of opaque material that is deposited onto the planar exterior surface, and a second layer of opaque material that is deposited onto the first layer. The machine readable code is formed in the multi-layered coating by removing portions of the second layer.Type: GrantFiled: September 20, 1999Date of Patent: April 16, 2002Assignee: Matrix Technologies CorporationInventors: Gregory Mathus, Daniel J.
